Problem is that for many matches of AFL it would be one quarter full. Some teams get around the 20k mark for matches at the MCG. Cricket won't get beyond 85k and will usually be significantly less. You don't want an empty stadium most of the time.
They won't extend the capacity by much. $110k at the very most. They are just annoyed that Perth Stadium is now considered the best stadium in Australia, and MCG are trying to reclaim the title. Good luck. Its a very expensive way of doing it.
One day of the year though. Remember not all grand finals even get to 100k. It would be less than a quarter full for many matches. Also remember that the seats between 100k to 130k are the most expensive to build but make the least revenue as they are so far from the action. That would be poor use of tax payer money.
@@jaysib_107 G is the MCG for Melbourne Cricket Ground. Victorians call it G. They're the only ones. Everyone else wanders what they're talking about. Massive stadium gets excellent crowds for the football and cricket season, plus other sports and concerts. But the thing is once you go over 100k then you'll have the stadium quarter full at times. Not a good look and expensive.
2:12 " The oval shape design always ensures that fans are always close to the action..." ....this is the sort of nonsense you get when you rely on AI generated videos.
5 yrs ago they were looking into a roof. One that would work better than Docklands. Had a good long chat with a MCC supervisor about the plans. Told back then about the rebuilding of the Great southern stand.
Who calls it the People's ground? only people from Melbourne. That's just one city in Australia you know. Spending money on it is a massive waste of tax payer's money. Clearly as a venue Perth Stadium has gone past it. But wasting all that money on a stadium that is excellent already is a disgrace.
Nothing like an afternoon at the MCG for a game of footy. Last year i went to see Melbourne and the Saints battle it out in like round 10 and there was still over 55,000 people there.
The 12th Experience, get your history right. Cricket was the original purpose of the MCG, but it Aussie Rules Football(AFL-it’s elite league) quickly took over as the dominant user over the ground for most Melbourne based teams season matches and finals, NOT JUST the Grand Final! The MCG and Aussie Rules Football is synonymous with each other. And yes the global market of TH-cam viewers will know what Aussie Rules Football is as it’s now becoming global on a grass roots level. Your underemphasis of Our nations native winter football code to the ‘G’ Is false and unfair. Everything else you said was fine, but that was a big mistake and unfair.
The Victorian government seems to want to keep the MCG at the top of the world and make it bigger to make it climb up the ranks but tbh it isn’t really needed, no stadium in Australia will become as big as the G
@@Sportguyteehee you said that they want to keep the stadium "at the top of the world". Your words. Its not even the top in Australia, so how can it be possibly at the top of the world.
Good video but the ground probably doesn’t need that much money thrown into it given there’s much more important things $1bn can go towards. No doubt it would be great later on in the future. Also everytime I see vision of that India v Pakistan match from 2022 it just looked like it would’ve been one hell of an amazing experience being there.
Your title is a little off - it would cost way more than $1B to rebuild the entire ground, probably about $3B - add at least another billion if they decided to roof the whole thing. It's much bigger than you seem to think. So change the title to upgrade and it might fit. Oh, and - Shane Warne's Ball of the Century was in England.
Thanks for the comment! The $1B mentioned is for upgrades, not a full rebuild. Things like modernizing the Great Southern Stand, better tech, and fan facilities fall under that cost. A total rebuild would definitely be way more, probably close to $3B like you said. I fixed the Ball of the Century error as well. Really appreciate it! Your feedback matters to me.
Nothing in the MCG is original. Its all been replaced every 20-30 years. Stands ripped down and replaced. I don't buy all the hype about the MCG at all. Its just a ground with huge capacity. Also Victorians love watching sport because the weather is so bad and the beaches and outdoor lifestyle is so poor.

The Great Southern Stand is now called the Shane Warne Stand, that's almost an insult to all Australians, get it right!!!!
The "G's" capacity needs to be increased to120,000 because Melbourne's population is growing fast!!

this should have been a 30 second video. all fluff
If the 'G' had a 130,000-140,000 capacity it would be filled on AFL Grand Final day.

Great video, great ground , but I’d rather they wiped a billion bucks off our state debt, the improvements can wait awhile!

Good little video except shane warnes ball of the century was in england not at the G
and there were a few scenes shown ~6:00 that were from the SCG

As a local to the “g” and regularly go there I hope they don’t roof it because it makes the lighting towers an iconic part of the stadium redundant
