- In this women's semifinal, it's Maria Nichting, a human services worker from Cincinnati, Ohio, vs. Cinda Mentzer, a microbiologist from Salt Lake City, Utah. Competing in the men's semifinal is John Adams, an account representative from Oakland, California, against Chris Vopatek, a student and bouncer from La Jolla, California.
Assault: The contender must attempt to hit a target while a Gladiator shoots at them using a tennis ball cannon.
Joust: The Gladiator and contender face off for 30 seconds on elevated platforms. They must knock each other off with pugil sticks.
The Wall: The contenders attempt to scale a rock climbing wall, being chased by Gladiators.
Human Cannonball: Two Gladiators stand on pedestals, and the contenders attempt to swing towards them and knock them off.
Atlasphere: The contenders and Gladiators battle in spherical metal cages. The contenders must stand on scoring pods while the Gladiators try to stop them.
Powerball: Contenders try to score points by depositing balls into baskets and avoid being tackled by three Gladiators.
The Eliminator: The Eliminator is an obstacle course spanning the arena, the winner of which advances to the next round of the competition.

Welcome to the official channel of American Gladiators, home of patriotic spandex and giant cotton swabs.
Beginning in 1989 for 8 seasons, this competition swept America. Two men and two women compete against each other and a roster of "American Gladiators". Events included, The Assault, Joust, The Wall, Breakthrough and Conquer, Hang Tough, Powerball, and many others, all culminating in the final event, "The Eliminator", a difficult obstacle course race. Every season there is a tournament to determine its "Grand Champion". For two seasons, there was an "International" competition taped in England where the champions from 4-6 countries competed similarly.

It was unbelievable that John came back from out of nowhere in the eliminator. That must have been the biggest comeback of the season.
Both the men's and women's ended up in such a close score, it's really a testament to solid performances all around.
Cinda did the Eliminator faster than both men in this episode 😮
A few things to point out.
First, Maria's Assault run was the first time a contender hit the Bullseye since Billy Wirth did so way back in Season 1. Until they changed the scoring format the following year (where they earned 10 points regardless of where on the target they scored the hit), contenders mainly hit the Outer Circle.
Second, this was the last time Human Cannonball was played until Season 4. I don't blame the Gladiators for not wanting to do that event.
They'd get hurt because the contestants would swing and with enough force, bang right into them before knocking them off the platform. No wonder they wanted to put a stop to it.

@@jnadle1 : Well Gold is good in Assault, but the gorgeous Blaze would definitely hit the contestant before because she was the best and amazing.

I feel bad cuz the assault in season 1 was so ghetto with no rises to hide behind it was so easy to get hit when you try to shoot. It was so poorly set up like it was put together on a budget of like $50 or something.

Me it was Blaze, Diamond, and Ice. Lace was too petite for me lol
Now I realized why I had a crush on Turbo as a kid:
1. Amazing skills in all of these games
2. Chiseled jawline
3. Amazing hair
Another eliminator to prove why the head-start system is way better. Either one of the women contenders certainly deserved the win there, but the whole "You have to beat the other by x seconds" is just kind of a buzzkill

also disagree adds more suspense when you see them close and have to guess the seconds. head start makes it less compelling to watch and leads to more the person with the headstart keeps the lead which is boring. the real travesty is Cinda getting robbed by awarding maria 5 points on the wall because she had a weaker gladiator trailing her, making the difference in the final.

STAT CHECK: John's 10.5 second comeback ties for the biggest Eliminator comeback in series history with Bridget Venturi, who overcame the same deficit against Wendy Brown in the Season 1 Round 2 Finals.

Human Cannonball was a dangerous event since day one..I’m glad they got rid of it..

The cannon on the assault course is often pointed at the target before the contender gets to it. All they have to do is pull the trigger🙄
@5:38, someone should do a wild and scariest shot the contenders took to try to hit the TARGET.
This was easily one of the best shows around when I was a kid. 30 years later, it's still one of the best. Entertainment has certainly degraded...

John Harlan was the best announcer for this show, too bad the hosts never mentioned him
Cinda got robbed, that free 5 points they give on the wall made the difference. Its bad scoring when getting further up the wall is almost always determined by gladitor stregnth like it was there, both should of scored 0 points for getting pulled off.
Warning- The gladiators and contestants are highly trained athletes and have a lifetime of experience, but they are not invincible. Bodies have been broken, necks broken, concussions inflicted, and careers ended in an instant. Although it is entertainment, the hazards are real, and the contestants and gladiators take real risks, endure unimaginable pain, and put their bodies, their careers, and their lives on the line.
