I just bought one last week I say it’s worth the money I can say that because I have 6 kids and I’m the only one working. I went through 4 kayaks and this one is by far the best. Good buy brother
When I had to sell my Ranger I bought a Hobie PA 14 360 and in my opinion they are the best. And you got the right color. The drive is amazing. The storage, stability and much much more. You made the right decision.
Love my pro angler 14. Do yourself a favor and get a trailer for it. Can get everything ready and then back down the ramp and unload it, and after a day of fishing you can just slide it back on and pull off the ramp to get out of the way while you put your rods and gear up
I just did 13miles in mine yesterday, wasn't a breeze but didn't kill me either.... It's definitely smooth as silk and wouldn't go back to a bike style drive
I almost bought the Blue Sky Boatworks pro 360 just for the over all deck space but this is so much more practical for fishing tournaments for me. The 360 was big but I love the horizontal rod storage. There is not much you can't love on this kayak.
To give folks a perspective on someone who has had a Hobie for a while, I have a 2017 Pro Angler 12 that I estimate I have over 600 miles on (200+ in 2021 so far). The Hobie gear is expensive, but one big plus in my book is that it is all very well engineered and constructed. All the little details in the kayak are well thought out and rugged. I think you could beat the crap out of it and have a hard time breaking anything. The stability and comfort is also great. Other than the cost, the only other downside for me is the weight. I exclusively use mine from my dock where it lives full time and don't spend any time hauling it around. If you were trying to load this onto a car top all the time, I suspect it would get to be old pretty fast.
I’m really liking the Hobie amigo. The amount of features and things you can do with it is fantastic. I’m not digging the price tag that comes with it. You made an investment and only time will tell if it was worth it.
This is a great review. I own an Old Town Sportsman 120 and love it. If someone was going to GIVE me the OT or THIS Hobie, I might take the Hobie. However, the only thing I really, really like about the Mirage drive over the PDL is it's ability to deal with weeds. Obviously, a propeller-driven drive is a hindrance although I've found that it takes me less than 15 seconds to free the prop when it does get fouled. This Hobie does have some great features for sure. However, it costs MORE THAN TWICE AS MUCH as my Old Town. I personally can't see that much advantage but that's just me. I'm also very curious about your statement about being tired after 4-6 miles peddling your Predator. I'm 71 and I know I'm not in as good a shape as you are and I routinely fish in my OT for 8+ hours and paddle 5-6+ miles doing it. I've never suffered any fatigue in doing it. Oh well, like I said, you've got a great boat there. Stay safe and tight lines!
I am replying to this because of the statement of the author being tired in the 5 mile range. I am 69 years old and going to do this to keep mobility. So for those of you that know is it his seat height in the OT pedaling bicycle that cause the physical problem or is it really easier to pedal the fin type drives long term? As for the 360 drive from what I have heard it is more complex therefor problematic and costly to repair. I do not own a kayak yet so not expert advise just questions. answers welcome.
@@chuckgilbert2035 I'm 71 and have a heavy 12 ft Malibu (I would not recommend it)PADDLE kayak. It's about 80 pounds without the seat. I can still load it on top of my pickup camper by myself. She out runs me. I can throw her kayak over my shoulder and carry a paddle in the other hand. If you're just getting into kayaking, I'd suggest renting a few, if you can, to see what fits your strength and ability and waters you will paddle. This Hobie weighs well over 100 lbs and probably needs a trailer to transport it. It's just a notch below a jon boat...
Awesome, welcome to the Hobie life! I’ve got an Outback and I absolutely love it, but the PA 360 will definitely be my eventual upgrade. Nothing compares to Hobie quality in my opinion.
If you got the duckies and you want the best then the Hobie 360 is where it's at. If you want value, it's hard to beat the Old Town Predator PDL @ $2599.
Hey buddy, would you please share your opinion and experience after a year of use? I am thinking to get one, but some problems with the drive for some people give me some concerns.
Just purchased 3 hobies last week!! I got the Mirage Outback...Which i absolutely love. My wife got the Compass and my daughter got the Lynx.. I fished out of a johnboat for many years and never knew what i was missing! I think i have been on the water 10 out of the past 14 days 😄 So glad i made the investment for myself and the family.
Buying multiples is a common theme. After using an Ocean Kayak tandem for fishing with my daughter for awhile, she finally proclaimed she wished her own boat. Having found ourselves off shore a number of times, I had confidence in her track and x-country legs to get her home with the then new Hobie Mirage peddle boats. Walked into the dealer intending to buy one for her, walked out with two, pricey at the time, but the enjoyment of the numerous trips we’ve had are amount the memories of my life and the expense would have been worth it even if doubled or tripled.
I’m happy with my Jackson, but wow.. the smart engineering of that storage is NICE! How tall is it? I store mine under my bass boat and they fit by half and inch or so.
I bought my third kayak and got me a Hobie Outback it’s great for me in the grassy area here in California. I still have my Oldtown Sportsman PDL 106. I love both of these yaks and it works well for my style of fishing.
Damn that 360 Mirage Drive is awesome, the fact that you could go sideways almost like a thruster on a yacht it's crazy. I just bought an Old Town Salty 120 PDL and can't wait to try it out
Im curious why you aren't going to add electronics to it. Hobie has some great technology making it super easy to add fish finders. If you're fishing tournaments you already know how much that could help you. Overall thats awesome though, I just got a new outback about a month ago after fishing out of a Native pedal drive for the last few years. You're absolutely correct in how efficient the mirage drive is. Keep up the good content!!
I've always been a kayak purist. I like the simplicity of a kayak and when you have to worry about batteries, graphs, wiring, etc it takes away from that for me.
Just put one of these on lay away and I will take delivery in a couple of weeks. I need to be able to wheel it from the garage to the lake I live on and launch from shore. Can you recommend a wheeled carrier and does the pedal drive come out so I can launch from shore (shallow) area then drop the drive into place when I get into deeper water?
I would think the big difference would be the seat. Hobie has so much more adjustment for comfort , I love the idea of the autopilot , it can also store fishing holes or even take you back to launch point if you do not know the area. With spot lock you have 360 steering too , just do not have to pedal
I love my PA14, but I just bought the Old Town Autopilot for the spot lock and it’s a better fishing machine than the hobie. You will love the hobie though. It’s awesome.

Had over 7k into it and it still didn't do it for me fishing wise . Downside to having it fully rigged is it gets even heavier haha , it's a good kayak but to fish it's more comfortable to be on a small boat or jet ski . So I sold it and put that money on a seadoo fish pro and never looked back ... Also ur putting dents in the bottom of ur 5k kayak having it on those horses ( I know I did same ) .. Can you make a comparison video detailing your thoughts between the Hobie PA and the Old Town Autopilot? I’m in the market for one of them and be nice getting it from someone that’s used both
Love the kayak. It’s your money so spend as you want to. Nobody tells me that I can’t buy what I want to. As long as you are enjoying it yourself don’t worry what other people are saying about it. They are just jealous of you and wishing they had one. Great video and it makes me want one now.
Honestly, it was never a big deal for me. You just put the flippers up and do small flutters to move. I never had an issue. And while it is possible to bend a fin, I never did and I regularly had my 280 lb self and 60lbs in gear on it.
Great camera work, good editing, very informative. As far as the money and is it worth it. Time will tell if spending that much is worth it. For those that bought Hobie many years ago and it is still in great working order then there is the real story on value to me. Considering the resale value then that sets Hobie apart.
That what my choice originally was. I watched 1,000 videos on the hobie PA 14 360 also on the old town AP 136. I chose the Old town. But I’m not going to lie I still want the hobie haha
@@AlexRuddFishing I got the word this morning that I pich up my 14 180 drive at the launch in the morning after work. Yea Ill be the guy rigging the new kayak at the lake at 5 am
Be careful if you ever capsize it be mideful of entering from front . I learned my leson dam near sunk mine front hatch fills with dam water so fast its crazy .. enter from back ..
I had one given to me by Old Town. I sold it to buy this boat. I had endless power issues with the AP. It’s a cool boat but the versatility and efficiency just isn’t there with the AP.
Do you have an update regarding the use of your hobie PA 14 360??? ... Have you encountered any break downs? Are there any down falls? Do you still like it? I'm super curious..... Though its my first choice, Im on the fence about buying one because of that price tag.... Thanks
360 drive is great but it is a relatively new technology and I've had some issues. Hobie took care of the issues, but I had two 360 steering failures. I think I had some bad belts or something. Been working well after the repeated repairs and part replacements, again while under warranty and they were on it.
i have been really wanting to get a kayak but after 2 back surgeries i'm certain that if I do I would want one with a trolling motor. Does that particular Kayak have the capability to add a trolling motor?
got a question? I'm looking to buy a used Hobie how much do you think a Hobie cat 14 kayak is worth it's a 2014 model just trying to see if its worth what he's asking for it
What microphone did you use for this video? I am really impressed with the audio in this video. I have been watching kayak review videos all evening and a good microphone makes a difference. I appreciate your detailed review of this kayak. I am 6'6 and 270 and not sure which kayak would be best for me. From looking online and looking at many pictures, it looks like the kayaks with a trolling motor in front of the seat have the most room for my super long legs. Thank you for the information.
I'd still put the end of my Ketch board up on the side, seems tilting fish downwards towards the bump board seems to get them to lay calmer a lot of the time.
I like my Old Town 106 PDL. I like a lot of the aspects of that Hobie but the price is just not justified imo. I struggled to justify $2K on my Sportman 106 PDL. Before haters say I can't afford it, I have NO debt and can afford it. Maybe if I lived somewhere like Florida and fished daily then I could justify it? Currently I live in MI and 6+ months out of the year the water is covered in ice. I do like the 360 drive and how you can move your yak any direction a lot! Nice boat!
How do you feel with the drive vs the OT pdl drive? I’m considering upgrading from my OT PDL to the 360 but the drive with my old knees is what concerns me.
Hey Alex, I'm curious if your research led you to believe that the issues with the drive breaking have been resolved? Did you consider that when you purchased? Thanks for a great walk through. Hey it's worth what people are willing to pay. I've got an OldTown 120 Auto so mine is well over $5000.00 by the time I add paddles, carts,, Batteries. The battery alone was $1200.00.
Yes that was the first question I asked. The engineers over at Hobie have resolved every issue from the initial run of drives. The dealer actually walked me through all the changes.
@@mattscarborough3789 they reenforced the cable from the drive control to the drive, reshaped several parts of the drive that were shearing off, reenforced and reshaped the gear that allows the 360 to move, there were several others I can’t remember right off the top of my head.
I’m digging it Alex, looks nice and the amount of storage space is crazy. Do you happen to know if the 180 drives are inter changeable with the regular drive that doesn’t come with reverse?
@@AlexRuddFishing ah man that sucks lol. Oh well, hopefully my wife takes a liking to the regular hobie I have so maybe I can get me a 360 in a couple years
The only thing I can see could be a problem is the drive,if your out a good distance and your drive breaks down your done. Trying to paddle that kayak is hella hard. I have friends who have purchased the 12 and 14 and have had to have hobie replace the drive multiple times
Mate where can I buy those extra day box or day containers in Australia or do you have any website where I can get my hand to one of those bad boys. Cheers mate.
I've had a pa12 360 for a year and it's an awesome kayak, but...I've already broke a belt for steering the 360 drive and now the drive fell apart, the bearing rods all fell out and now I'm waiting for a drive replacement. I'm not sure the drive is of the highest quality or design, but it's awesome when its working correctly. I do not abuse or push the boat hard, but I have fished a lot of hours in the year that I've had it. I'm hoping Hobie has made some updates to the 360 drive, because I've read lots of comments online with other people having the exact same issues with their drives and belt. Hope your kayak holds up.
That was the first question I asked before getting the kayak. Hobie has resolved every issue from the initial run of boats. They made a lot of adjustment to the drive, belt placement, gear case. Several other things.
How do you transport it? Back of the truck or a trailer? I’m on my first kayak, an Old Town106 PDL. It fits in the back of my truck just hanging out a tad. I’ve been looking at a bigger one, just not sure if I like it hanging out so far.
Love the new Kayak, I am in the market for new kayak, currently fishing a Jackson big rig but as you said age is moving in, my biggest problem is getting from the seated position to the standing position, can’t find any seat height risers so I was wondering on the 360 how is it getting from the seated position to the standing position? I’m like you I’m 6.3 about 260 and it is a pretty good task getting from the CD position to standing so stable ability and ease of standing would be my next two main concerns in buying a kayak . Love the channel and thanks for your input
If you can afford it then yeah sure it's all a matter of perspective. it's not in my price range I had a hard time justifying half of that for my lightning strike my opinion is for that much money id add a nice Jon boat to my arsenal but i don't already have a glitter rocket like you lol so if you're happy with it then have at it
If you flipped it I would say it would get some water in it. It’s dry enough to keep anything you want dry otherwise. I had my DSLR in it in the pouring rain and it was bone dry.
Good video. I am anxiously waiting on my PA 14 since April 2021. What's the deal with running no fish finder, especially fishing tournaments? I find that interesting, but I know it would save a G or more. Tight Lines!!!
Question: Can anyone tell me if the housing of the Mirage drive mechanicals extends below the hull? It appears that while the prop blades will fold, the mechanicals are susceptible to strike damage.
Love the new Kayak!! Congratulations!! I haul my Old Town kayak in back of truck. How difficult to get in and out? Is the wheel setup convenient when coming out of water? Why 14 vs 12? Thanks
It's heavy but actually lighter then my AP. Waiting on my wheels. They are on back order. I went 14 because in my experience you always regret going smaller then bigger.
@@AlexRuddFishing thanks for the feedback. Have been looking at Titan but seeing your Hobie I am rethinking. I am an old fat guy so stability and comfort is a priority! Your channel has been a great asset while learning to bass fish!!
@@scottquesada4697 you wouldn’t be disappointed with a Titan 13.5 either in terms of stability, I mainly fish out of a Slayer Max 12.5 myself, and I’m a middle aged fat guy and can stand while fishing with not issue. The Titans are more stable than it. The biggest advantage to the Hobie kayaks are the fin drives don’t tangle up with weeds and grass easily like the prop style drives do.
After two tournaments, a river float, and a couple of plinking around trips - it is still as awesome as I thought it would be. Mirage drive is so silly efficient, it feels like your peddling a kayak half the size. 360 is clutch, you can do some crazy stuff with it. Make the kayak move in ways I didn't think kayaks could move. Down side it is one heavy mug. I think a lot of that will be remedied when my H-Cart comes in.

Love the kayak. It’s your money so spend as you want to. Nobody tells me that I can’t buy what I want to. As long as you are enjoying it yourself don’t worry what other people are saying about it. They are just jealous of you and wishing they had one. Great video and it makes me want one now.
What a great review, literally the best review on a kayak I have ever seen.
My biggest issue with the hobbies has been the mirage drive in shallow water….the old styles that don’t have the 360 or kickdown feature
Honestly, it was never a big deal for me. You just put the flippers up and do small flutters to move. I never had an issue. And while it is possible to bend a fin, I never did and I regularly had my 280 lb self and 60lbs in gear on it.
Welcome to the hobie team
Great camera work, good editing, very informative. As far as the money and is it worth it. Time will tell if spending that much is worth it. For those that bought Hobie many years ago and it is still in great working order then there is the real story on value to me. Considering the resale value then that sets Hobie apart.
Awesome kayak bud! What do you use for an anchor?
That what my choice originally was. I watched 1,000 videos on the hobie PA 14 360 also on the old town AP 136. I chose the Old town. But I’m not going to lie I still want the hobie haha
Does it easily get dirty? Why is there so many black smudges near all of ready accessed areas?
Have a old town 120 auto love it but i have to say the 360 is a fishing machine add a electric motor it would be unbeatable
Ive come full circle back to my PA 14. I couldnt do the 360 though. I hope yours is issue fre, but Ive heard of a few problems with the 360
I’ve not had issues with the drive but about sank it few days back. Video drops Sunday that shows what went down.
@@AlexRuddFishing woa!! What happened?
@@HendersonHookin you’ll have to wait and watch. It’s kinda hard to explain.
@@AlexRuddFishing I got the word this morning that I pich up my 14 180 drive at the launch in the morning after work. Yea Ill be the guy rigging the new kayak at the lake at 5 am
"I ain't rolling in dough. Anyway here's this huge garage, with a big bass boat and a big truck to move all of it."
Be careful if you ever capsize it be mideful of entering from front . I learned my leson dam near sunk mine front hatch fills with dam water so fast its crazy .. enter from back ..
Old town 120 auto pilot is the one to buy folks!!! FOR THE MONEY IT MAKES SENSE!!
Thanks
Awsome review bro loved it I just bought a PA 14 never had a kayak before something new for me
So how do you compare that to the autopilot 120 . Which do you like better and why
360 drive is great but it is a relatively new technology and I've had some issues. Hobie took care of the issues, but I had two 360 steering failures. I think I had some bad belts or something. Been working well after the repeated repairs and part replacements, again while under warranty and they were on it.
I actually asked about all the issues before buying. Hobie has made a bunch of changes to the drive since the initial release.
Great video. One of the best if not the best 👍👍👍👍
i have been really wanting to get a kayak but after 2 back surgeries i'm certain that if I do I would want one with a trolling motor. Does that particular Kayak have the capability to add a trolling motor?
Best kayak out there love my pa 12
got a question?
It’s a joke from a video I made earlier in the year.
@@AlexRuddFishing I had to laugh at that. Knew exactly what you were referring to. 😂
Fantastic video… loved how you covered everything. Liked and subscribed.
I went with the outback. Love it
Hey Alex, I'm curious if your research led you to believe that the issues with the drive breaking have been resolved? Did you consider that when you purchased? Thanks for a great walk through. Hey it's worth what people are willing to pay. I've got an OldTown 120 Auto so mine is well over $5000.00 by the time I add paddles, carts,, Batteries. The battery alone was $1200.00.
Yes that was the first question I asked. The engineers over at Hobie have resolved every issue from the initial run of drives. The dealer actually walked me through all the changes.
@@AlexRuddFishing what did they change? I'm waiting on a replacement drive as I type this.
They are not. It’s completely different tech within the kayak itself.
I'm looking at buying one in the next month or so. And I'll be living the the knoxville area than. Did you buy locally or order online?
Mate where can I buy those extra day box or day containers in Australia or do you have any website where I can get my hand to one of those bad boys. Cheers mate.
I’m sure you could order one directly from the Hobie website.
Well done video & walkthrough. Your editing was great- very enjoyable.
Great overview man, enjoyed that and it was helpful.
@@AlexRuddFishing is yours the updated one? I was told if the drive fails they have to replace the entire drive.
Would you drive with your rods in the holders while traveling down the road? Or put them in your truck?
I stick them in the truck but I know several folks that leave them in the kayak.
How do you transport it? Back of the truck or a trailer? I’m on my first kayak, an Old Town106 PDL. It fits in the back of my truck just hanging out a tad. I’ve been looking at a bigger one, just not sure if I like it hanging out so far.
Back of my truck with a T-Bone bed extender.
Shoulda waited for the Hobie Lynx. Lots of money, sure, but it's like a solid surf board with a seat.
Would you recommend boondocks to help with transporting the kayak from truck to water?
Yes. I’m waiting on the H-cart to come back in stock for mine now.
After watching you fish out of yours I definitely think I might give it a try really considering buying one.
stupid question - does it come with the trailer? If not, where do you get one?
No and a lot of folks make kayak trailers.
If you can afford it then yeah sure it's all a matter of perspective. it's not in my price range I had a hard time justifying half of that for my lightning strike my opinion is for that much money id add a nice Jon boat to my arsenal but i don't already have a glitter rocket like you lol so if you're happy with it then have at it
how watertight is front storage? can i store camera equipment in it.. would it get wet if the kayak flipped?
If you flipped it I would say it would get some
water in it. It’s dry enough to keep anything you want dry otherwise. I had my DSLR in it in the pouring rain and it was bone dry.
@@AlexRuddFishing Thanks for the reply. appreciate it
Looks great. Enjoy the new kayak
Beautiful kayak which hobie is the kayak? I know it's the Pro angler 14 what's the name
You answered your own question.
@@Triberius thank you for the feedback. I know each have their +/-‘s.
Nice Video I hope you Will do a follow up after some TOW with that Large Kayak.
I don't have a hobie yet but plan to upgrade soon. Congrats bro🔥🔥🔥
Very good review that’s the color I’m waiting for but in the 12’’. Thank you.
Did you own an old town predator? How would you rate it overall?
Congrats on the next level yak !
Were you sponsored by Old Town ?
Does this open a new tournament circuit for ya ?
Thanks for the entertainment!
Thanks!
No.
No but it is allowed in all tournaments.
Thanks for taking time to watch!
They’re 5,700.00 after taxes in Alabama.
def not a waste brother, I loved my hobie pro angler!
Very nice kayak. Not sure what the scag is or if I typed it right. Joker looks nice and wide and stable. Maybe one day I'll have one. Good thorough walk thru 👍🏻
It's essentially like a skeg on a boat. It just helps the kayak to track well.
Hobie offers the best customer service around you got a great boat enjoy.
upgraded your BlackPak yet?
Million dollar question... did you sell your Bonafide?
Year and a half ago.
yr later , how has your drive held up??
I see tons of these expensive kayaks for sale used on Craigslist. Buyers remorse?
Hell yea I’m still saving for a hobie!!
Bravo Bro
Nice man that is definitely on the top tier, now the one with the mini ultrex is probably the tip top but this is definitely in the top 3.
