    Bilingual education is best effective when teaching at the elementary level. The rapid growth of the brain allows for language development to thrive. Studies show that it takes on average 7 years for a person to master a language, it takes longer if you start at 7 years of age and above. Other countries including Mexico have started to do this in their schools. Every year they are deporting 1,000 u.s citizen children to mexico because thy dont want to be separated from their families. The districts who are receiving these student are paying for bilingual teachers to teach at their schools in order to communicate with the mexican american students. Interesting right? I learned this in class last week.

    It's a shame the American public system is so far behind. We have had the option for bilingual education in Canada for many many years now.

    This is not “new” and it’s not brain surgery. Most children around the world are easily able to be bilingual or multilingual- I don’t know why so many people in the US think US children are incapable of the same.

    I absolutely LOVE how there are a plethora of videos about the research on bilingual education that are well presented....oh but these videos are in other languages sorry Monolinguals, you probably wont' be able to get anything out of it.
    You will get to comfortably and easily slam bilingual education here in English videos because frankly, you can't speak about it to a wider audience and thus are handicapped unfortunately by a natural ....ignorance of any other people speaking other languages who ALSO have these conversations.
    You can comfortably comment in these videos, completely ignorant of the wider world and their hundreds if not (for some regions) thousands of years experience in living in the REALITY of various cultures and languages trapsying through their lands.
    Seriously, SO MANY other countries speak more than one language as a STANDARD. Are you going to let YOUR failing to learn another language impeded the rest of children who have the opportunity to connect globally?
    Are you going to REALLY let your ignorance cloud potential learning for other children?

      Yuri92001 . Speakin 3 languages have children who speak multiple because their mother is from a different language area all together, I feel i am more then fit to comment. True study on multilingual edecation shows that you speak your own language at home and the national (being different) at school. Only in seperate periods should you introduce the 3d 4th and 5th offering. This goes for the age up till 8. From 8 on you can then introduce latin , greek , programming and coding or other languages coinciding to the ability of the child only.

    I don't believe Bilingual programs the way they are built now don't have promising results. The solid native language should be home-schooled, or done in an all Spanish environment like they do in Chinese-American schools in the U.S. Chinese-American kids are placed into these weekend and summer schools by their parents. Chinese-American kids attend these classes and regular American schools; it might mean more homework for them but they still attend. They are sent their to finish learning their native language (they also learn more about their culture). Just like the teacher in the video said that it benefits bilingual students to solidify their native tongue. This program should only be applicable to bilingual not mono lingual students.

      Bro you may be able to just pick up a language when you’re young but that’s because kids just practice talking a lot. It’s not any easier. We just learn in different ways. We may have to pick up a book and study u stead if listen for hours a day. I’m 14 and have been learning Spanish for 4 months and I have no problem having a conversation in Spanish. Some would even say that I am fluent. It’s really not that hard

    This is a waste when teaching fully in Spanish to kids who speak mostly Spanish. Teaching Spanish to English speakers is really cool. It sounds nice but Hispanic kids need to get a super grip on English while they are young.

      ACTUALLY the research states that when a student is HIGHLY proficient in their L1 (their first language) it will easily transfer to their L2 (second language) when first developing literacy skills.
      In FACT a solid foundation in your L1 PREDICTS success in aquisition of your L2.
      As someone who has actually participated in this research, I can tell you that this could not be further from the truth to assume that a student who speaks Spanish MUST sever contact with their primary language.

    • @mrbilingual
      @mrbilingual 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yuri92001 That is not what the research shows! To even mention it is totally foolish when you consider that is the problem to start with. These kids speak Spanish only, so how did it help their English when they were speaking only Spanish? This is about special catering. There are countless ethnics in the USA who kids do not speak English but go to school and end up graduating at the top of the class. The brain will not focus on two things at one time. If they are in school learning Spanish, the other kids are advancing. To prove your theory to be "dead wrong," it is already the case in Miami. Cubans resist learning English more so than any other Hispanic group. Because of it, they have the highest drop out rate in the USA! Even grown Cubans who have been here for fifty years or who were born here still speak little to no English. What you speak AT HOME is not the concern or the responsibility of the teacher or school system. If it is then all students with a second language MUST BE catered to and not just Hispanics. This is all about special entitlements! What about Asians and others?

      +Abod Naif Yes, I think one tricky part is that some 400 languages (I read that number somewhere) are spoken by school children in this country. It is not practical for us to have dual language classes in all those languages. That is where creative use of supports for the home language come into play.

      Americans have this reputation of only speaking one language. Which it looks as if their education is basic.
