  • The Terekh family moved to Serbia from Russia in 2019, seeking a better life. They've found jobs, paid taxes, and say they never made trouble. But now Serbia is threatening to deport them.

I live in this living meme of a country. First, many more have come, where is that 30.000 number from? A rough estimate is 300-400.000 Russians alone since the start of the war. Second, they must leave because certain politians in power, like Vulin, work closely with Russian authorities to hunt them down. Serbia is a mixed place, with both pro-West and pro-Russia sentiments, but certain politians play their part unfortunately. Some Russian anti war activists have also been beaten up, threatened, etc.
And Serbia is not a democracy, but neither it is a full fleged dictatorship like Russia, or NK. I like to call it a hybrid democracy-dictatorship, with elements of both.

Just like most of the countries, US and UK are also doing the same things with their own immigrants even in a way larger quantities so do not pretend like this only happens here. Serbian political leaders are joke but as so the whole Balkan is. Serbia is occupied country in every way from both East and the West, our decision makers are depending on US, EU and Russian interests since they were washing money on the both sides. Once we become truly independent fair judgment and decisions would be made. Hard working people who are willing to adapt in our society are welcome, those who come here and do not wish to adapt should be asked to leave. This is plain and simple, also if you arrive in Serbia as immigrant you are not able to teach locals about their own politics, you can have your voice in that matter once you become Serbian citizen but until then it is up to us to deal with it.

Serbia sucking up to Putin? This family seems like they want a better life and do more for Serbia than many who live and they had a noble reason to move to a place like Serbia so there doesn't seem to be a single reason as to why not embrace them as Serbians compared to deporting them to the place they moved from in search of a better life.

It doesn't make much sense. If Serbia wants to get rid of Putin's supporters (to work towards EU integration or whatever reason they may have for it), these people don't seem to like Putin too much (they just said that Russia is not a democracy) so they're not a threat. And if they want to get closer to Russia and hand opponents to Putin, well, this doesn't make sense either because these people don't seem to like Putin much but they're not big activists. Either way they shouldn't be their target, it doesn't make much sense. But of course, administration can be very mysterious, so I'm not sure we'll ever know why...

Like where? All the best countries with best living standards discriminate against them. They can go to some central asian hellhole, Georgia/Serbia, Turkey... but the west with the #1 living standards is closed off. Which doesn't make sense, wouldn't the West like to support anti-war activists in the first place? If they hate Russia so much, then a brain drain in Russia would be in their interest after all.
