João Pimentel Ferreira galvao is no joke and im not saying this beacause of his numerous titles
but more from his tecnicality and eyes on details
it make sens details and the way he teaches bjj
but all this is no surprising when u trained with terere and telles good people learned from good people
i rolled with terere during a seminar years ago just flawless he was
i kept smiling during the roll beacause everything he was doing made complete sens
not everyone who is a name in bjj knows how to teach galvao is a champ but also produced champs
i enjoy all his instructional videos !

Brazilian instructors are highly focused on what works on competition. Many have won multiple state & national championships so the way they teach is much more nuanced and technical due to their high level competitive experience.

Agreed. A huge point at 4:20 is staying on your toes even with your knees in the hip and shoulder. I just realized that this is the way to keep weight on the opponent and not on one's own knees ( after five years of jiu jitsu ). I always used to have my insteps in contact with the floor. The number of guys with blue and even purple belts who don't apply pressure is shocking. I always complain about the lack of pressure and encourage lower belts to stick it to me.

  • @olemew
    @olemew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

Thanks for the video. Your content is awesome. This is useful for judo competition too, because pinning your opponent is even more relevant. Some tips and concepts I'll try to remember:
    ~~ PART 1: BASICS 00:00 ~~
    PUTTING PRESSURE TO SECURE POSITION
1:30 Use the "feeding-the-lapel" grip to staple his shoulder
2:00 Add weight/pressure on his chest by staying on your TOES instead of your knees. That way you keep your hips off the floor.
2:30 For more pressure, push with your toes while you pull the lapel with your controlling hand.
2:40 Keep his triangled arm off the floor by pulling his elbow with your forearm
    3:05 Careful with being rolled.
3:35 Leg positioning. He doesn't like "kesa-gatame" style for this kind of side control.
ANOTHER OPTION ONCE HE IS TIRED AND RELAXED
4:00 Transitioning: at the same time, bring your elbows in (pulling) and squeeze your knees against him (one of them even under his shoulder if possible)
    4:35 Shoulder on face
ATTAKING FROM ANY OF THOSE 2 POSITIONS WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT
6:00 Grab your own lapel (opposite side) with your free hand to isolate his arm
7:00 If he tries to frame, go for the americana
7:40 If he doesn't try to frame, use another attack. Release his lapel, push his arm down, trap his bicep with your knee.
8:00 Now that his arm is trapped, force him sideways, move your higher elbow in, control gi/pants/belt (to stop hitchhiker escape later on) and work on the armbar.
    ~~ PART 2: OTHER ATTACKS AND IDEAS 11:20 ~~
13:10 When you put him sideways and move your elbow in, push down on his ribs against the floor using your forearm.
14:00 Breaking his frame (if he got one) and attacking.
    16:35 Transition to north south
17:00 Kimura or armbar from there
    19:20 North-south recap

This is good. If you want to be a blue belt that actually gets submissions and not just positions this is a good foundation. Stapling the near side arm with the shin is a skill that needs developing and you need to become adept at pinning at the elbow joint and putting all of the weight on the contact point ( not your own knee or instep ). My preference is to step over and then trap the head with my left leg and go for the straight arm bar but a strong guy can give you a fight when it's arm against arms. I will be trying this alternative in the coming week.
Some golden nuggets towards the end for finishing from the North South position.
