You’re voice is just SO calming. If you ever did a guided meditation or storytime….I’d listen to it! Loving your calm practice and flow. Very inspiring and grounding. Thanks.

Oh thank you so much. I can always tell how I am feeling by the tone of my voice. I try to record these videos when I am peaceful, present and grounded because that is what I love to receive from things I watch.

Lovely irises! Mine are about to bloom …..deep deep purple. I take them for granted as I’ve always grown them. Now I will appreciate them more as you don’t have that luxury. Funny how cats tend to like to hang out on whatever project you’re working on. My Lily likes to sit on my fabric squares for the new quilt I’m making. Love your videos and watching you create. God be with you.🦋

Hello Cathy, so true about cats :) Pierre also loves it when I redecorate a room, and claims it as his own. Enjoy your beautiful irises and thank you for being here to create with me!

Thank you Jess for this lovely video and sharing your thoughts on creativity and balance. I woke up this morning with thoughts of all that I would like to do this morning-revisit a painting I started months ago, repot some plants, tend to my garden , read my book “Braiding Sweetgrass “, organize my closet….I was feeling out of balance before I even started my day! Your video was so calming and reminded me to be in the moment, breathe and accept each moment as it comes. ❤

Oh my goodness, I love that, thank you for letting me know. And I am reading Braiding Sweetgrass right now too

Hi Jess. I SO love your videos. You inspired me to take a sumi-e painting class at the Denver Botanical Gardens last week. I’ve been loving it as a meditation! Thank you. . . I’m a fellow Zen practitioner of 30 years (Suzuki is also my Zen grandfather) and practice contemplative painting too. As a serendipitous moment, I read this poem by the amazing Mary Oliver for the first time this morning. So perfect to share with your video. . .
    Praying by Mary Oliver
    It doesn’t have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
    small stones; just
    pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
    a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
    another voice may speak.
(Shared by a younger woman Zen teacher and poet this morning in a Buddhist Film and Arts workshop this morning in Boulder.)
Lovely to feel the joy of practice as speaking from another voice together. . . So appreciate your videos. They always make me want to go paint!

Warm bows and thank you for saying hello. :) I bet we know some of the same people, the Soto Zen realm can be quite intimate!
Oh my goodness... reading that poem this morning gave me shivers of life. Ah, Mary Oliver, there is a wonderful interview with her On Being (with Krista Tippett) that I return to often.
And ah, you live in a place that has been sacred to me. My Nana (the original artist) lived in Colorado Springs (they were air force) for my entire life. So I would visit the Springs, Boulder, Denver, and all over the Rockies each year. Always felt the pine stitch on my rakusu was a nod to that spirit... whatever it was I felt amongst the rocks and the pines in Colorado never left me.
It is lovely to have you sharing these moments, truly so meaning to me.

Lovely video! With the sage canvas I was thinking....its showing you what it is supposed to be, the shadowy green hues are so beautiful! I too am realizing I cannot force my creativity, but need to have patience and let things naturally play out. 🌿

That is what I was thinking too about the sage :) things are just so much more enjoyable with a lighter touch... restraint is definitely something I'm learning with age and time

Fabulous iris pictures. A bit late to the party, been at the allotments all day, very productive! Here in the UK it’s spring bank holiday half term for schools, we get a week off, we don’t finish for summer until mid-July. Off to Arizona and Utah in august, can’t wait! Want to take lots of pictures for rock and desert paintings. Have a lovely week ❤

Oh that is exciting, I love the desert... very inspiring. So many rocks! Haha, and I do love rocks. Just make sure you don't take any rocks from the Petrified Forest National Park...! badluckhotrocks.com/ :D

I’m new to this channel and have loved the videos. As I perused your collection, there appeared to be a distinct timeline between the type of art you are creating. It seems like the earlier pieces are of animals and flowers and your later collection is more abstract. Is there a backstory you would be willing to share? Also, wondering the same about the change in hairstyle. If too personal, please disregard and thank you for your videos.

Hello Judy, welcome and yes that's true, the direction of my path has changed a lot in these past eight years. I started my channel to share the process of becoming a children’s illustrator and learnings along the way.
I started creating the abstracts at the same time in response to a request from a friend who worked in the business, but kept the channel focused on the illustration. Over time it became clear that the art was much more enlivening, natural and supportive than the illustration.
So slowly, I stopped and turned fully towards what I wanted to devote my attention. As for the hair, I shaved it for a zen ceremony and never looked back. 🥰 xj
