The dominant fortification building on the rocky outcrop at the port, the Torre Truglia, was built in 1532 on the foundations of a Roman tower. Its strategic position has brought it various destructions: in 1532 by pirates, rebuilt in 1611 and destroyed again by Turks in 1623. [4] Until the 1970s, a barracks of the financial police Guardia di Finanza was located in the fortification, whose main task was to sighting and intercepting smugglers' boats.
As a holiday destination, Sperlonga became popular with the Roman chic in the 1950s, as the footballer and actor Raf Vallone, who belonged to the jet set at the time, bought a villa and moved to the town. This also attracted numerous film sets to the town
