I heard the most amazing idea: art and literature are magic in the truest sense. They influence our behaviors and sensibilities, and sometimes redefine our outlooks. That's the essence of *spell casting*, isn't it? Think of how the music you listen to can affect your mood. How a charismatic character can redefine how you see yourself. I like how this guy says art separates us from natural experiences. Interesting stuff.
Think of language as a system that qualifies and categorizes objects, ideas and events. That systemization is not just a form of communication with others, but it influences everyone who uses it. In that sense you are right, art communicates. But he's got a point: this is something outside of natural experience. I have begin to see art in terms of something supernatural - outside of nature - and respect the power of its influence on our thinking.
"Art is a lie that tells the truth. Science is a truth that tells a lie." - quote of Pablo Picasso I guess its better to ask an artist if you want to have an inkling.
My definition of art is very different than the one offered in this video. In my words - Art is the language the artist creates to order to convey a message or meaning to the receiver. Art coexists with intention, concious/deliberate or not. In other words, art has a purpose. I believe the best art is the art that, abstract and unique as it may be, communicates with clarity. - Well, for what it's worth, I thought I would throw that out there for anyone looking for other explanations to the ques
Then you give it a meaning yourself. An artists' intent is not necessarily what is important, it's what you take away from the work that defines the piece.
I have to disagree. Look at the first landscapes and still lifes painters do. They might not have a meaning but they are more than a pretty picture! If you have ever done a painting before it take hours upon hours of frustration sometimes tears before you even start to like a painting. And sometimes you end up hating it. There may not be any "meaning" to it but you worked your ass off and it is a hell of a lot more than just a "pretty picture".
***** I would argue if you work your butt of to make a picture it probably has some meaning to you. You can always ask what the motivation is. Is it just to become more swift with a brush or is it because this certain picture causes a certain feeling in you? I was not totally accurate when I said meaning, because Art is also something which carries a certain feeling. For me you have to start with a feeling before you think about the meaning. And if something fails to cause a certain feeling in me it also has no meaning and it's not art.
hello . art is a misconception of someone elses thought pattern . self discovery can only be understood by yourself , so when this becomes impersonal you can enjoy your own conscious awakening . with regards

It's amazing that we have the ability to create an entirely new world through art.
He's a pedo. Stay away
Well put. In the words of Albert Einstein: “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough”
As Louis Armstrong once said: If you have to ask, you'll never know.
Art is just the product of our creative and intelligent mind...
Life is art.

Natural phenomena.
I'm not sure if they changed the title of it in the last couple of weeks, but it is currently entitled: «Leon Botstein *asks* "What is Art?"»

So many people say art has to convey a message or emotion but so many amazing paintings we know don't have a meaning.
Then you give it a meaning yourself. An artists' intent is not necessarily what is important, it's what you take away from the work that defines the piece.
I agree I just don't think we NEED to give art a meaning. People get too hung up on it :)

Which one of the next photos resembles art the most?
Nice attempt, indeed. Now, second question! What is not Art?
This guy is not answering the question...
Paras Yo-koe ikinä
Is nature art?
He states that art is man's fingerprint on the world so no
If there is a creative force behind the universe, nature must be art. If there is no creative force, no.
