    I am glad to see the old Trackers are still filling an important role.

    Those guys were earning the paycheck that day. That's a lot of trips for them. In and out like clockwork. Very coordinated operation. Those Trackers didn't miss a beat either. Great video.

    I worked on S2- D and E 's and OV-10's while in the Navy in the late 1960's (AO). it sure looks weird to see turbo prop S-2's and OV-10's without sponsions to mount ordnance.

    Controlled Burn ? This time of year ? Excellent video once again John. Mike was telling me to expect haze up in the FRC from all the new fires, but no issues. Luv
    the background sounds you caught along with the video, and the prop action. TNX

    What was the typical turnaround time for those aircraft ? How much editing did you do to get this video down to 27:51. I noticed that # 89 shows a number of times, gets in and out quickly. Once again, this is very, very, well done ! Tnx

    How many turns can they make before refueling for this fire ?? I realize it depends on how far the fire is.

    Did the S2s get modified with turbo props? The trackers I remember had rotary engines that like they might stall out any any second!

      Sort of. They converted a newer set into S2Ts. We had no issue with the old motor, just needed more and more reliable power

      Yes, some S-2's were modified but most S-2 aircraft still have the very reliable Wright 1820 engines, such beautiful music at full throttle. *R-1820 was at the heart of many famous aircraft including Douglas DC-3, C-117, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers, Grumman used it in C-1, E-1, S-2 D/E, HU-18 Albatross, Lockheed Lodestar, North American T-28 B/C Trojans were used as a Counter-insurgency aircraft during the Vietnam War.

    Are the S2 and S3 the same airframe?

    • @twarrior17
      @twarrior17 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, The S-2 Grumman (Tracker) with 2 Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines, S-3 Lockheed (Viking) with 2 General Electric TF34 Turbo-fan Jet engines.

      Retardent helps to create lines to prevent spread, especially in steep terrain. These 2T's are often the first line of defense against a fire until ground crews can mobilize.

    If CALFIRE invest so much money into this program they should take one from the military. Retro fit your birds to load up on water and or retardants from aerial tankers. You consider how long it takes to land, reload, fly back,drop and do it all over again you're wasting precious minutes. Be retrofitting your birds and training your pilots CALFIRE could have an almost constant stream of water and retardants on the fire and all they would have to have is the big water tankers above and wait for the birds to move into the stack. If you really want to add flexibility to the fight just keep another tanker with FUEL for them too so they can stay airborne longer. But, that's just little oh me thinking out of the box.

    OK folks. This video sucks. I thought it was just a constant loop ...sure does seem like a NASCAR Race- just not as creative.
