It doesn't really matter if this story was true. If it was Mickey's favorite to tell, well then, that's good enough for me. Besides if you listen, he never says it was true. It was just a story to show why Billy was such a good manager. Twenty years since you've been gone, Mick. Still miss you.
True. He'd probably own the all-time HR record, including in a season. Plus several other records. But if he took care of himself and was more like Maris. I doubt he would be the iconic figure that he became.
That's a great story, and he tells it well, but it's not true. Bob Hope told the same story, and so did John Wayne, and both of them before 1974. I've heard a couple of people tell it since then, but they were telling them post-1974, so they may have heard Mickey telling it.
unfortunately i think hanging out with mickey mantle and billy martin would have been kind of sad to see, what with all the alcoholism and what not. mickey could have had somewhere around 600 homeruns and 3,000 htis had he taken better care of himself. but credit the mick for taking sobriety seriously those last 3 years of his life. even when people would say that it's too late and what's the point he chose to go out with his head held high.
this story is fake..you people have obviously never heard of Jerry Clower,...the story is from his stand up act (not anything to do with billy martin or mickey mantle) and told a lot better
Ping Pong Did you know Mickey? I bet not. I did, the story is true and it's even better when he told it in person. If you don't know the facts, don't comment.
Ping Pong Yes dear, I did know him, his wife Merlyn, Mickey Jr, David, Billy and Danny. David and Danny flew their family to my wedding in Barbados. Once again, if you don't know the facts, don't comment.
Mickey Mantle provided some of the best stories, and not to mention the best moments in baseball history.
Imagine hanging with those guys?
If I could go back in time to be there ...... Man
I've read that story in print, but I've never heard Mickey tell it. One of the funniest things I've ever heard. Priceless!
RIP Mickey and Billy

He never said the story was true, he just said he uses it to get a point across about Billy Martin...

Great story. Maybe true, maybe not, but still great.
LOL!!!
That's hysterical!!!
freaking awesome
thats hilarious! thanks
Actually Ahn, if he took even halfway decent care of himself he'd have something like more homeruns than anyone who has ever play the game.
True. He'd probably own the all-time HR record, including in a season. Plus several other records. But if he took care of himself and was more like Maris. I doubt he would be the iconic figure that he became.
thats true but I've heard his knee injury took away from his game some
