Hi! Canadian here. Jan 2025 will be my 5th trip to Puerto Vallarta. In 2022, I packed carry-on only on the way down. Thanks to following you! I bought too much stuff so I had to check a bag coming home. With storing your winter coat during the flight, zip it up, lay the zipper side down on your lap. Fold the arms in, then fold the bottom upto to collar. Then you can roll it from the short edge, or fold in half to put it in the bag. Or stick it in a pillow case to use as a pillow on the flight.
For those of you who, like me, have "just more of me to love" and these cashmere or merino wool tops don't come in your size, I suggest bringing thin long undies tops and bottoms for layering. One pair silk top and bottom, one pair of silky poly tops and bottoms (these can be layered together for extra warmth, and double as PJs - they take up less room than PJs. Layer these under your top and jeans, and with a sweater on top, will keep you toasty. Lands End and LL Bean offer plus sizes.
Many years ago I invested in long silk tops and bottoms. They are lightweight and packable for cold weather but I also used them to double as full coverage PJ's in tropical climates where I am highly sensitive to insect bites.
@@donkiml5805 Yes! I also fold it into the hood to make a little back pillow for lumbar support. Lots of airlines are making thinner back cushions to increase leg room. Ugh.
I have foldable bag just for my winter jacket/coat while I'm in a plane. When not in-use, I just pull the bag into a narrow strip and roll it up. The same bag also can hold loose items or duty-free bags so nobody touch it. I use this trick because I have a trip traveling from hot to warm to cold yearly. The beauty of this hack is I send my jacket to dry cleaner right after in that same bag along with other stuff I need to be dry cleaned. It is big enough to hold a huge puffy jacket, a coat, and more.
Got my Bernardo Forrest Green coat today per your recommendation. Love it! The inside vest that can be unzipped is fabulous. The backpack straps are genius. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Love your videos and watch them over and over…use your packing list for every trip because I’m absent minded.
West Coast Canadian here….we are heading to Puerto Vallarta (Nuevo Vallarta) for the 6th time in January…love it there. Have used many of your packing tips over the years…thank you 😊
Another great video! I am a short petite lady 4’11”. I never do a carry on since it is too difficult for me to reach the overhead with a full bag. I usually do an underseat personal item bag and one checked bag. I am an overpacker who is still trying to learn all the tricks. I just got home after a visit to my brother. I flew Southwest Sacramento to Houston Hobby and home to Atlanta. I had all great flights and they didn’t lose my luggage!
I agree skirts are more versatile, but dresses can double as ‘skirts’, especially in cold weather. A top over a dress, and maybe a belt, gives you another layer of warmth. Especially if you are like me and are cold all the time. If my legs were as nice as yours, I’d show them off too!
Had to smile-I always cover up my legs, no matter how hot it is! And as a Florida person, I have the “thin blood” that’s usually cool. But putting another top over a (sleeveless) merino dress is SOP.
@TravelTipsbyLaurie You're so welcome Laurie. Haha, I'm going to fly somewhere warm as it's absolutely freezing in London. Can't wait for your next video. I find them so informative 💯
I thought of your tip in September about putting your coat in a bag and then stuffing it under your seat or in the overheard. I flew with a small carryon bag and shoved it under the seat before noticing that the whole area below my seat and under the seat in front of me was sticky. Ugh! I couldn't wait to throw my bag and shoes in the laundry when I got home! Also, and I say this as someone who has always lived in the cold north, a coat with a hood makes all the difference when it's windy. Yes, a hat keeps your head warm but a hood creates a pocket of heat from your head to the bottom of your coat. So leave the hood home at your own risk when flying in the winter.
I use my packable down coat as a blanket or pillow on the airplane. I leave enough room in my carry on to stow it when I arrive in the warm climate. I travel for two months with about the same amount of clothing that you suggest. I substitute a skort for shorts.
Thank you for giving us that good information. If you are travelling in and out of Australia, your carry on allowed is only 7 kilos, and some airlines will include the personal bag within that weight. So we are very limited in what we can carry as carry on.
Just FYI - the waterproof On Clouds can be very hot, especially in warmer months. I just returned from rainy Scotland and I used a water repellent spray on my regular, Brooks running shoes and it worked perfectly, kept my feet nice and dry.
Laurie, right now in Saskatchewan it's -15F, and it's warmed up over the weekend lol. We're ready to fly just about anywhere right now. Thanks for the video!

If you do not love it, return it. I love it over a 3 / 4 length sleeve top or even long sleeve because if or when you get hot inside a restaurant, you have a base layer without being bulky to begin with.
THANK YOU! I'm leaving for Argentina (hot) and Antarctica (mild for me, coming from Minnesota, USA) in two weeks. I'm required to bring specific clothing items for the Antarctica portion, which literally take up half of my carry-on suitcase. I've been collecting Merino Wool tops to reduce the clothing, but I have accepted I need to check my luggage for this trip. BUT the Antarctica clothing will be coming onto the plane with me. :)
An old trick to keep your feet dry in pinch is to put shower caps on your feet inside your shoes. Your shoes may get wet, but your feet will be dry, and most importantly warm.
Always awesome info! I am travelling from Victoria, BC to Toronto, ON for a Christmas party. I am normally all in on checked luggage so figuring out carryon only toiletries where I need to look amazing AND packing a fancy dress, shoes & coat plus winter sightseeing clothes, coat and shoes is HARD!

Love watching all your videos; your tips and hacks are the best. I wanted to give you a heads up that both WestJet and Air Canada are charging passengers for carry on luggage starting in January for economy fares. I would rather just check a larger bag in this case and pay a few dollars more.
I was hoping the sandals you mentioned would be included in the shopping list. I needed some for my Mediterranean cruise this fall but wasn’t sure I’d find some that fully supported my feet.
If I’m going from cold to hot, I like to just tough it out and freeze between the car and the airport terminal rather than wear a bulky item that I won’t wear again until we return but will have to pack along the entire trip. I agree with your idea to just leave your coat in the car.
It can be tough! But I have done it once. Now that we have remote start in some cars, that could be a tip too...to turn the heat on before getting there on the return.
I pack very light weight tops and bottoms if going to a warmer climate and fold the heavier coat very flat and leave it on the bottom of the carry-on suitcase since I don't leave my car at the airport. I'm able to pack at least 5 to 6 tops, wash them with the underwear & socks daily, lay them flat on the hotel towel then roll them up to get rid of the excess water then hang them up overnight to dry (I also carry a few folding plastic travel cloth hangers). This way I always have more choices of clothes to mix and match the way I want everyday.
