    If using a nav controller as root view you need to set the segue to over current context and cross dissolve rather than the view controller itself for this to work! Nice tutorial.

    Could you please explain... what if we use this method of creating a modal pop-up view on a separate view controller BUT instead of using a "Button", using "Up Gesture" to bring the modal pop-up. I am not able to find a way to do this. Can this be achieved using swipe gesture?

    Great teaching Mark. I'm still not able to see the background though. I set the root view background to 50% opaque and the popup view controller's Presentation set to "Over Current Context" but my I can't see the underlying original view controller underneath. Any ideas on what I did wrong?

      Hmm... also check your storyboard segue. It should be set to "Present Modally" (instead of "Show").

    Hey! Great tutorial again. However, I have a question. I put a UIVisualEffectView on the background of popupVC and when it is executed, the blurness kind of glitchss. I mean by that is It has been seen when the transition is done. Do you have any idea to fix that?

    • @bigmtnstudio
      @bigmtnstudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Faruk, I have experienced the exact same thing. The problem is that Apple does not recommend having the blur effect with an alpha of less than 1 or they can not guarantee what will happen. When you transition with a cross dissolve it is affecting the alpha so it acts weird. Try a different transition effect besides cross dissolve and see if that helps.

    I found this tutorial extremely helpful in creating custom popups/alerts. I do have a question though. When using dismissViewController, is there a way to manipulate an object in the fist view? I've tried using prepareForSegue to make some buttons in the first view disappear using [myButton setHidden:true]; but this results in a crash and I haven't had much luck with dismissViewController's completion hander. Appreciate any help!

    • @bigmtnstudio
      @bigmtnstudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jordan, you could use a Notification instead. So the first view you listen or observe for a notification. Then in the popup you post a notification and the first view will hear it and run any function you want.

      If using a nav controller as root view you need to set the segue (click the segue in storyboard and set there) to over current context and cross dissolve rather than the view controller itself for this to work!

    • @bigmtnstudio
      @bigmtnstudio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I know what you mean. "two sections"?

    • @FDVproductions
      @FDVproductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Moeykens in your video you have like one section with the background image and one with the flight details. The orange button is positioned above (centered between) these two sections.

    • @bigmtnstudio
      @bigmtnstudio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I understand now. Well that's just an image that I got permission to use from a designer on Dribbble. But if you were to do that on a Storyboard then you could drop a UIButton on there and set the image to that orange icon with the airplane. Then you can use constraints to position the UIButton anywhere on the screen. Just move the UIButton around the screen until you find a good place for it and set the constraints.

    Hi Mark! So I have a game on my view controller and a pop up display just like in this tutorial. However when my dismiss button in the popup goes back to the view controller the variable it was supposed to change didn't update. Any thoughts?

    • @bigmtnstudio
      @bigmtnstudio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rutch, where is the variable you want to change? Is it in the first view controller?

    • @rutchjohnson
      @rutchjohnson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Moeykens Yes, the variable is located in the view controller. The IB action for the dismiss button is also there. When clicking the button the popup dismisses and the variable I want to change doesn't get updated. Both view controllers (in storyboards) are linked to the same class.

    • @bigmtnstudio
      @bigmtnstudio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhh, both views using the same viewcontroller. I've never done that before. But I suspect what is happening is when you navigate to your popup, ANOTHER instance of your viewcontroller is being created. So you have two different instances of viewcontrollers for each view.
      What I was going to suggest is you could look into using NotificationCenter. When you click the dismiss button on your popup, it will post a notification. Your first viewcontroller will be listening (observing) the notification and do the update.

      1. Why is that the text field of presenting view controller becomes nil ? The presenting view controller is still visible it did not disappear but still text fields become nil
      2. If the presenting view controller had disappeared on showing up modal. Then dismissing modal should trigger up view did appear but it did not happen in my case.

      If you run the app on a device is it still slow? I have a 2014 laptop and it opens pretty quickly.

      I probably have to give it a try. I am running the simulator on a 12inch MacBook because I am developing on Windows (Xamarin). Thank you for your tip!

      Hi again! I have tested it now on a device with no luck. There is absolutly the same performance as in the simulator. Compared with your example, I have added an slide animation to the inner view of the second view controller. The strange thing is that the background of the second vc appears immediately but it seams that the animation has a delay although the delay parameter is set to 0. Do you have an clue why this could be? I am running the animation in ViewDidAppear().

    //I want to present the controller overCurrentContext, I have to conform to this UIViewControllerTransitioningDelegate protocol in order to create custom transition effect, so to present the view on top I configured modalPresentationStyle but still the parentViewController becomes black. Here is my code.
    let herbDetails = storyboard!.instantiateViewController(withIdentifier: "HerbDetailsViewController") as! HerbDetailsViewController
    self.modalPresentationStyle = .overCurrentContext
    self.present(herbDetails, animated: true, completion: nil)

    Amazing video but I would recommend practicing a bit before you make a video so you don't make those silly mistakes.

      +Rachit Girdhar Thanks! Yeah, this is one of my early videos when I first started to upload to TH-cam. I hope I've gotten better since! 😀
