It's the new Unboxing Aerobics Workout.......gives "Sweating to the Oldies" a whole new meaning perhaps "Sweating for the Oldies"......Great video Bruce!!!
G'day Bruce, sorry I gave you such a hard time with the unboxing! Seems that the internal layer of squashy foam still wasn't thick enough to absorb the "drop test", which also caused the NuBus card to pop out. Next time I'll fill the computer interior with foam as well . For those reading along it was indeed SikaBoom expanding foam. I'm really pleased to see the 840AV up and running again! Enjoy! When I was using it as an edit station I used a RAID 0 config of 2 drives to get extra capture speed. And the longest render alert I saw was "About a month". No, I didn't wait for it to finish. I'm impressed that the software even had that as a displayable note.
Is that all that was wrong with it was those caps a PSU? Man you make that look so easy! Thank you for making videos. It's really cool to see someone that really knows alot can break down complex tasks and is very human! ( there are alot of boring robots out there).
Great video Bruce! Great to see the Quadra restored to its former (yet slightly brittle) glory! 👏 Meanwhile that packing job was next level, makes me almost want to see a video from the guy who sent it to you on how he packed it!
I have an 840av sitting on the floor about 3' away from me. I also have an extra motherboard and a box full of spare parts for it under my desk. You are quite correct about the brittle plastic. Don't look at one too long or your stare will cause something to break. When I moved, I had my nephew cradle it in his arms yet the CD bezel still got damaged. Lucky I had all of those spare parts. Great machine though. What I don't have is an original keyboard, mouse or monitor.
Nice video on this restore. That was quite a bit of a workout trying to open that package. The expanding foam was a good idea and I may use this technique in future. Instead of placing the expanding foam directly onto the computer (with some plastic coating of course) maybe place the expanding foam between 2 boxes, then bubblewrap the computer and place it into the second box. Then add a lid for easy access to remove the computer. Just an idea...
Great nostalgic video. This was the computer running my first AVID. My boss also had a system with that Radius board connected to one of the very few Radius Apple clones. Oh the 90s😅
Way to Go Bruce Loved the video I have one of these and it’s nice to see how and what I will need to recap when the time comes glad to see your still recapping and very happy for you getting your hands on one of these Macs!
Great video and congrats on the Quadra 840AV! 👍 With the advances in retrobrighting in later years in the retro computing community it makes me wonder if more could be done to brittle plastics - do we have any chemists in our midst? 🧐
Very very brilliant MAC. Thanks for your video! May i ask you a question? Well, in 1993, 840AV borned with that input/output videoboard or it was an optional? I mean, which was the input/output video board on 840AV or 660AV? Thanks Edy from Italy
This may seem like a rather odd question to ask someone on a Mac Restoration channel, but here we go: I love old Macs and will ultimately begin collecting them again when circumstances allow it. The same goes for the other type of computer I wanted to ask you about. Are their channels that you trust that go into the restoration of old SGI computers such as the old Personal Iris, Indy, Indigo and Indigo 2, O2, Octane, etc? I personally like your educational style and teaching videos, and the way you teach works well to my odd way of learning (some disabilities there, not too relevant), and I hope to find someone who can do the same on an SGI restoration channel if one exists. Do you have any recommendations? Both old Macs and SGI computers are a part of my computing heritage and I want to give them the love they deserve when the time comes; especially the ones you find inexpensively (relative term) that say "parts only" on places like ebay. Thanks! :)
I made a 15 minute video in premiered around 1993 on a IICX and when I hit render, the progress bar came up and said “time remaining, about 2 days” lol😂
I use a purpose-specific PCB cleaning solution diluted in distilled water. The product is made by Kleentek and is called Electro, but I believe it's only available here in Australia. I have also heard that Branson EC is good. Here's some more info about it from one of my other videos: th-cam.com/video/RLgFSdSDE-8/w-d-xo.html
how to tell you are out of shape? You loose an argument with expandafoam! :) Its a shame you had to bleep those awesome aussie F bombs, but I understand, funny as hell though!
I never had one of these when they were new, but I've played with a used one in the past. It was quite impressive for many years, even after the PPC macs were in the wild. The case on these things was horrible though!
My favorite unboxing yet. 😂

Easily one of the best unboxing I’ve witnessed. You really earned this one.
you opening the box is honestly one of the funniest things i've seen in a while

So you'll never know if the render was worth a month-long wait! Thanks again for your generosity Geoff!
It feels so goooood to have your support, Bruce! 🥳
Oh dear lord! Still have to watch the rest of the video but the fast forward unpacking of the box has me whezzing XDDDD
This is the BEST unboxing video on TH-cam!

Literally it's in its own tomb
That drive activity indicator mod was super simple and super clever.
Radius Tech here. Thanks for the memories.

Myst!!! Ah the memories 😊
Glad I found your channel. Very interesting content and very well presented 👍
Who needs gym equipment when you can unpack a Quadra 840AV?!
Great video - and congrats on your new acquisition, it must be very satisfying. Ah the days of S-Video and such.
1. LOVE that packing job. Maybe that's how we're going to have to start shipping our retro tech LOL. 2. What a COOL system! I'm jealous. Congrats!

I really enjoyed this format, Bruce. Well done on bringing the 840AV back to life!
Congratulations! You have gotten the "full meal deal" here. I am very jealous. Enjoying your adventures in Mac land. Cheers
@32:20, "Totally unnecessary' um... no, that is TOTALLY NECESSARY and a MUST HAVE item...
I am getting nostalgic, I worked with a Quadra 840AV back in the day, it was crazy expensive but my boss payed for it so lol
Tell the truth, Bruce. Your unboxing was at real-time speed, not fast-forwarded. LOL - great video and your genuine excitement was wonderful!!!
Great nostalgic video. This was the computer running my first AVID. My boss also had a system with that Radius board connected to one of the very few Radius Apple clones. Oh the 90s😅

Enjoyed this! Thanks Bruce!

first time i see someone almost have a heart attack just from opening a package
I'm recovering well.
Great video Bruce!
Well packaged! Kudos!
New subscriber here. Great channel; was pleasantly surprised you're still active (came from the Macintosh IIci vid)
Thank you!
hahahahahaha bruce you got me dead laughing trying to open that box XD
Boss-level unboxing
Great video and congrats on the Quadra 840AV! 👍
With the advances in retrobrighting in later years in the retro computing community it makes me wonder if more could be done to brittle plastics - do we have any chemists in our midst? 🧐
That question has definitely been asked. It would be great if these plastics could be treated somehow.
Very nice!
Oh yeah. Had one brand new back in the day.
36:16 is my favorite part
This was great fun!

great restauration..is it recommended to do the ultrasonic cleaning after recapping or before?

🤣🤣🤣
VideoVision FTW!!!!
Have you tried gluing back all the little broken plastic bits?
I tried this with another computer, but they just end up breaking again somewhere else.
@@BranchusCreations Oh no! :(
What's this expander foam packaging? Could it be used for 3d printer postage?
Great video by the way 🙂🙂
It's Sika expanding foam. It worked well, but (as you saw) it was a nightmare to remove. I makes its way into every nook and cranny.
@@BranchusCreations thanks for the reply Bruce
What do you use for cleaner in your Ultrasonic cleaner?
I use a purpose-specific PCB cleaning solution diluted in distilled water. The product is made by Kleentek and is called Electro, but I believe it's only available here in Australia. Have one and a 9600. Since new.
Didn't know it mattered
Very cool!

Brilliant video! SUBSCRIBED!
👍
Bruce knows his stuff!!
Another one saved!
Nice to know that Apple has always been against people upgrading PCs that people buy from them! hahah
Ironically, they later released the G3 and G4 towers that were so easy to work on and upgrade.
Is that Steve’s 840AV? LOLOL
Definitely not, this one works!
I gave mine to Salvation Army about 8 years ago 😭
How can i contact you mate. Im in canberra and need your help.
a great workout! lol
We will see this unboxing on tik tok soon 😂
Beeping foam 🤣
made me lol a lot...
OMG Funny!!
Oh my G-d fella you should do something for your health.
I don't know what you're talking about. I'm an Adonis.
