      God bless you dear. Don’t mind the treacherous dr. Abati. People can be shameless at time. Very bold in telling lies.
      Old traditional law is that Igbos do not give women landed properties but exclusively reserved for men. On inheritance it’s for the first son to take over his father’s house upon demise whilst the other male children are allocated lands outside the house or compound.
      But now , so many families have done away with that law and buy houses and lands for daughters and girl children too.
      Please don’t mind lying abati. Your truth of owing house in Enugu as a Yoruba man has already settled the matter. Thank you very much dear

      The Lady OJY Okpee is a subtle tribal player. Ojy- “ IGBOS ARE THE JEW OF NIGERIA, YOU KNOW THAT FOR A FACT”- really !! Dr. Abati has his own shortcomings no doubt, I’m sure some Yoruba men own lands and houses in the East/Igbo land but Ojy Playing the Igbo / eastern better card against other tribes. She tuned topics to flavour her narratives. I know people will begin to see her eastern/Igbo tribal warrior game she plays like social media warrior with time. Glad Binbia put her in her place - all tribes have the enterprising spirits. Ojy only focus on narrative of Igbos are better-she does it every time. How do you want the other tribe to feel. She good at setting up tribal conflict. You can’t hide for too long people will see you for what you are.

    @ Dr Abati. I am aware of for the first time you got it on national TV. Some Igbo families may not sell land to anyone outside their family members because they lack land even for their own children to build homes. Such should not be taken for an unwritten law in Igbo land.

  • @TheOkwi
    @TheOkwi 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +62

    I couldn't let go, Dr. Abatti's misinformed assertion that Igbos do not sell land to foreigners. The truth is that any person nomatter where you come from can purchase certain lands either. The only land you can not buy, which is what TS Benson was probably referring to, was a family inherited compound that can only be passed down to only the first son of every family. That's what you can not touch, that includes members of the same family.

      His point is that there are lands that are passed on to generation and can't be sold to outsiders Mr. Benson obviously wanted to buy land from his in-laws kindred which is not right. He can buy land in Enugu but not lands belonging to a certain kindred. Am very sure in your village there are lands your elders will never sell even if you offer them Nigeria

    • @George-q6p
      @George-q6p 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      His point eluded you. His point is that other than what Igbos call the Obi of a deceased person, land is sold by Igbos to whoever can afford it. The Obi is the place a man made his homestead in his village, which is also where he is buried , and in some cases, forefathers are also buried there. This land has overarching social, spiritual, historical, and psychological significance for the Igbo and his lineage. Surely, you can understand why such land is never sold, whether to another Igbo man or to a Yoruba man? So, land may generally belong to the family as you say, and the Igboman who wants to sell land will sell to the highest bidder. You can be sure of that.

    Akpabio's patronising attitudes towards Igbos is nothing but annoying and cringe. Igbos are not begging for handouts and palliatives. They just want to be treated fairly and equally just like every other Nigerian. As simple as that. They want to be able to contest for Presidency and win without fear of their lives and properties being destroyed.
    As someone who has an Igbo mother, I will just advice Akpabio to use his position to make policies that are beneficial not only to Igbos but Nigerians at large.

    Àbati should wash himself of his closet tribalism. Rhetoric like "Igbos came to Lagos and have now become omo oniles in Lagos" is frankly unnecessary and in poor taste and so is channeling the Eleko of Eko's potential to be offended. It's quite subtly inciting and so is the "conquering spirit of the Igbos" assertion. Igbos are not interested in conquering anybody or any land. Lagos was Nigeria's capital and that's why ALL NIGERIANS arrived there and not the liberalism of the Yoruba "race".The TOS Benson story is particularly poor. "He had an Igbo daughter and Igbo daughter..." So Abati once you marry an Igbo wife, the daughter becomes an Igbo daughter? The story is disingenuous, blatantly unintelligent and sad. "He said something about Igbo people..."? Shame on you Abati. If TOS Benson wanted to buy land in Igbo land, all he had to do was to get a damn agent! Abati did not even ask why TOS Benson would decide to buy land for his daughter and wife in Igbo land? Does it mean TOS didn't see them as part of his family? What a pathetic story. And why does an anecdotal and unsubstantiated story of this type by one man ages ago amount to Abati's generalization of Igbo people? Some people out themselves as prejudiced and jaundiced so embarrassingly. Shame. The TOS Benson story was simply irrelevant to the news headline under conversation. And Abati posits his theories about Igbos only on the basis of TOS' wild divisive story. It is simply poor journalism as Abati hasn't himself tried to purchase land in Igboland and was unable to. It's not the irony of Nigeria, it is the prejudice of Reuben Abati and his ilk.

      Take it or leave it Mr. The Liberalism of the Yorubas is what you are enjoying in Lagos and other SW States. Don't keep defending rubbish. You don't sell or give out land. Like I wrote before here, Land is a major factor in development. Beat me to this, I remembered during my 4th year in UNN. We had a trip to UI and during our tour, one of the lecturers told us UI still owns almost 40000 acres of land of teak production in Osun State, Osun State. My Igbo lecturer told us point blank that several times, UNN approached Nsukka communities to get land for expansion and utmost development but were declined. All to all land is ancestral. Tell me which lands in Africa are not ancestral? Keep on keeping the ancestral land and stop development in your region. I dare you to beat me to this if an Nsukka man can buy land in Abatete.

    I want to contradict the insinuation in reference to Chief Benson as espoused by Ruben. It's false that Ibos do not sell land to non-Ibos. The scenario could have been a clan or village mandate, which sometimes bar some Ibos outside the particular clan or village from purchasing land or home. So, it's not a general mandate in Iboland. Ruben is well informed to research this issue.

Glad Bimbia put her in her place - all tribes have the enterprising spirits. Ojy only focus on narrative of Igbos are better-she does it every time. How do you want the other tribe to feel. She good at setting up tribal conflict. You can’t hide for too long people will see you for what you are.

      There had been lots of bad news last week coming from the east (Igbo land), death of that senator, mass shooting that led to the death of some people. This was more of a good breath of fresh air when the Senate president was saying good things about the Igbos. So she was happy to showcase the good side of her culture. All her colleagues should have spoken about the good things they also know, and if anyone felt threatened then they should have also stated the good things about their own culture/tribe. Painting one tribe badly so your tribe will look good, is low standard and secondary generalising a tribe to an individual incident caused the debate I guess.

He mentioned that TOS Benson was the one being quoted, which offers another perspective. Dr. Abati also spoke highly of the Igbo community, and as someone who has traveled extensively, I can personally attest to the wonderful Igbo people I met in Okinawa, Japan. Let's try not to focus solely on the negatives and be more open-minded in our listening.

    What Abati said in reference to TOS Benson is not correct. Let him tell me the village and I will take him to the place and buy land. The worse case scenario is that is that the family may not sell specific land that are designated for members of the family but there are always places that are open to other people to buy in the community. Also, many communities are also careful on the purpose of buying their land so you don't buy the land and turn it to a den of criminality or operating base for Ruga.
    Vimbai's perspective is correct, outside Nigeria, we all take credit for the way we are perceived as entrepreneurial, but back home, we begin to find faults.
