I was at that race and really had a great time. I flagged at that track a few times and raced 125 and open class (beginner) a few times. Great place. Even met what may be the current owner of that track doing a service call/install when I worked with an IT service provider more than a decade back.
I'm from Lubbock, Tx and I have fond memories of racing on that track once in the summer of 1980. We were in Phoenix visiting relatives and my dad hauled my bike and gear with us with the intent to race somewhere during our visit. I turned 12 years old while we were there and we found out about Canyon Raceway who was having races that weekend. I was one of the best 80cc motocross riders in my little area out here in west Texas and had a pretty hot little DG prepped Yamaha YZ 80. We showed up, signed up, and I raced against kids I had never seen on thar ultra hot Arizona August day. I did pretty well, but not like at home. Phoenix and the Valley were much bigger than where I was from, so the level of competition was higher.as I entered the "A" class or whatever it was called (the top 80cc class). I believe I was 6th or 7th. Right in that area. The gate was packed too. I remember dealing with good sized rocks on the track, which were a real bitch when you're on a small bike. I had never seen that on tracks in my area. Also it was very up, down, and with off camber turns. I was use to the flatter and simpler tracks I had grown up racing on in west Texas. It was tough. The heat was killer. There were some really fast boys there. A tough day, but fun and a fond memory.
Small World Scandle68.. I moved from Lubbock to Tucson in '81 and raced there until '83. I worked at Stovall's Yamaha in Lubbock during Shobert's early days doing set ups, taking out the garbage ect.. Your right about Canyon with the off cambers and general size - it looked a lot bigger back then! Great video - thanks for sharing.
Nice vid! That was a really nice track back then suicide hill was the big jump there, it was big when they first built it. Tony D had that track dialed that day .

I raced here back in ‘75, 250 amateur. What a great track.
