Dear Simon , I was looking at your video's on youtube (going back in time to find your old snow settling video) and roughly counted just a bit less of 700 in 12 years time . And you made more for your patreons . WHat an achievment and dedication . Wishing you more creative and fruitful years ahead of teaching us .
Wow, I watched this out of curiosity to have an idea of how resolve works compared to the motion version you released a few days ago (I am an FCPX and Motion user). So different, it seems much more tech minded which I kinda enjoy (I’m developer by trade). Interesting and nice effect !
Thank you. I am so often asked 'what application is best?' but for me it's a deeply problematic question to which the only answer is 'which application is going to deliver the look you want most effectively?' For me in this case at least I think it is Motion ... but I didn't know that until I tried doing the Fusion version. There is no doubt one could make a Fusion version that would look better but only at the cost of a great deal more time and effort. But if you asked me which application I prefer using, it would be Fusion every time. Hence my problem with the question!
One of my fellow videography bunglers and hardcore Adobe disciple claimed that when it came to real professional editing, DaVinci just wasn't up to the task. I consequently referred him to one of your videos.
Hi Simon. As always - love you Fusion Tutorials. 👍 This question isn't about this tutorial, but Fusion in general - and the differences between "Fusion Studio" and "DaVinci Resolve's Fusion". Originally getting into this black art from editing in DR, I've found that my aging laptop baulks at rendering some comps I create when using Fusion within DR. Other aspects of DR probably using too many resources, etc, and even when it runs to completion it can get really slow, whereas the same comp in Fusion Studio runs far better/faster. As a result, I've been exporting some of the larger comps (that are not interacting with, or dependant on, an overall video edit) from DRF as a .comp file and running them in FS. Life seems good so far. However - I've also come across the situation where some tools that are available in DRF, are not available in FS .. the latest one I've bumped into being "AlphaMatteShrinkandGrow". Are you aware of a resource, somewhere, that lists/highlights the incompatibilities between the two?
Yes, I find that Fusion Studio is a lot more performant than Fusion inside Resolve Studio. I've raised it with BMD and they insist I am wrong so I don't know what's going on. I confess I don't know what the feature differences are except that everything that is called Resolve Effects xxx is Resolve only. Of course it's super easy to make your own alpha shrink/expand tool using the classic blur/scale method. And Erode/Dilate will also give you some of the features that are in the Alpha Matte thing.
@@SimonUbsdell Strange that they don't acknowledge the performance difference. For me, one comp in DRF (nothing else happening other DR tabs) gradually ramps up memory usage to 30GB (of the 32GB installed) getting ever slower until it crashes at around frame 780, whereas in FS it trundles along at a reasonable pace (considering all the particles) to conclusion (frame 3000) and never uses more than 12GB. 🤷♂ You gotta love it when a real top pro says of something that "It's super easy ...". 😜 Wait until you're 75yrs old ... when sleeping is the only thing that's super easy. 😂 Thanks, anyway.
@@OzoneVibe I don't know if you are on a Mac or a PC but one thing to make sure of if it's the latter is that your GPU drivers are the latest. That caught me out one time and updating the driver improved things quite a bit in Resolve.
Wow...fascinating!! It's been awhile since I've last tried anything with AF...and I"m starting to try to learn Davinci Resolve. I"m comfortable with the node based editing, I've done some color with Resolve in the past. You're moving fast in this one...and while I understand most of the concepts and terms....whew....a lot there. Anyway, I'll start delving back through your catalog of Fusion videos....but in the meantime, do you have some recommendations for someone that isn't step 1 beginner, but slightly more advanced (not much) to start and look for information, etc? Thank you in advance...I'm subscribed and starting to relearn and learn anew again.... CC
Thanks. I did an introductory series many years back when I myself first started to get back into Fusion after a long gap: th-cam.com/video/dgGyVVvPceE/w-d-xo.html (Probably too basic for you though ...)

Haha! Thank you very much :)
I once made a variation on this theme, but I used 'cedars' as the text, just because I was/am a pedantic film nerd 🙂
