    I have always spoken highly of Ancestry and usually get excited with the news of new tools arriving, but the introduction of the new fee structure has already had an impact on long standing Ancestry users who no longer can access what they paid for when purchasing a DNA kit. Pro Tools will be financially unattainable for many who the subscriptions are already stretching their budget. So disappointing.😞

      I agree.

    • @SheNiteOwl
      @SheNiteOwl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I totally agree with you. But I am now on the Family Plan. There are 5 people in my family plan and we each pay about $10 per month for full access. I am not related to all. If you have only 4, you would still save. The price of full access is out of the price range for many people. Not everyone even knows about the Family Plan and how much you can save.

    • @fyreflye100
      @fyreflye100 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Agreed. Not everyone has a family member (let alone several) who wants to do genealogy. Some of us are the only genealogists in our families. This just sounds like an excuse for Ancestry to hike up the membership fees and take away the more affordable US-only option. I wonder how many low-income people are going to get priced out of being able to use Ancestry at all?

    • @SheNiteOwl
      @SheNiteOwl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @fyreflye100 I recommend this plan to friends who have friends. I wanted to get on the plan and it took us all to find a total of 5. My husband agreed with you that getting 5 is difficult. Ancestry pay scale has gotten out of control. Those Pro tools still seem extremely over priced. I have been on the Family Plan since Jan and it has worked well but I wonder how long it will last.

    • @fyreflye100
      @fyreflye100 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@SheNiteOwlI appreciate the reply but I agree with your husband on this. The new plan puts an undue burden on lower-income Ancestry customers. Some folks (like me!) would have a difficult time finding four other people we know and trust who actually want to do genealogy on Ancestry. I guess we're just out of luck, because Ancestry clearly doesn't GAF about any customers who aren't well-off financially.

      I only pay once a year for one month to see new information but now I'm going to have to pay to see the common ancestors which suck. I think they do that so people will pay more often. Before it was just the family trees you needed to pay for to view.

    I still love you Connie, and I'm still extremely annoyed Ancestry because of the way they're putting everything behind a paywall nowadays. But I have to admit -- the matches-of-matches feature will get me to purchase pro tools, even if it's only for a month or two. But the new membership plans sound AWFUL! It sounds like an excuse to charge everyone for the expensive Total Access membership rate. I have zero need of a "family plan" membership and I doubt many genealogists do.

  • @jille9650
    @jille9650 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Ancestry, consider changing your revenue stream model to "early access" instead of "pro tools." With an early access model you set a beta timeframe for a new feature which you charge for. Those who can and are interested will pay, and you get a service in return by getting their feedback. Others who can't or don't want to pay wait until the general release date for the feature which is then included in a regular package.

    • @sylviabargas3340
      @sylviabargas3340 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To make more money, of course. It allows ancestry to charge free users for results they were supposed to get with the test they bought. An appalling move when shared matches were advertised to be included. I have been left feeling conned. My matches have been switched off since, as I cannot allow them to use my results to display shared matches to others while they are withheld from me.

    • @JaneAirUK
      @JaneAirUK 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Withholding results from people who have purchased a DNA test (advertised to include them), while including AncestryDNA Plus in a membership for trees and records makes no sense. Not everyone with a membership will have taken, or be interested in taking, a DNA test. The two services should have been kept separate.

    I'd love to be able to select an individual in my tree and "Prune Hints to This Branch", and only see hints related to that person, their ancestors, and Potential Parent suggestions. "Filter By Name" is not very useful when a branch gets filled with siblings and spouses. I have a couple of lines that go back 10+ generations, with too many Georges and Johns and Elizabeths and Marys; being able to only see Hints from the branch I'm *actively* researching would make Hints really helpful. Having 3547 Hints is just overkill. if I'm researching 18th and 17th Century ancestors on one branch of my family, I don't want Hints from the 20th and 19th Century, from other branches of my tree, or those from my wife's tree.

    Thanks. Always fun to listen in on you two. I need now to figure out how I can make these DNA tools focus in only on the branch(es) that I am concentrated on in my research -- applied to my whole tree (after 55+ years of work) these tools would overwhelm with material to work on that I simply won't get to. And a related hope is that this focussed research (late 18th century and earlier) is at the very edge (or so I understand) of what genetic tools can shed light on. Onwards. Thanks again!

    So thrilled with the matches of matches -- such a great feature at MyHeritage, and will just rock at Ancestry, now too. Would love in addition to that, a true DNA browser/painter. The Family Circles/Groups feature I've been using since it first popped up. It is still could use a lot of improvements, for example it would be great to have it set up more like a private message board with availabilities for topics, threads, etc. rather than just messaging and the more facebook like feed. It has so much potential that is not being tapped : ) That being said, our family group does love it, and we think of it like a kitchen table in a house where we can drop in for coffee and leave each other notes.

    Matches of matches in common and how they are related is the answer to 23and me taking those tools away from us THANK YOU!!! Ancestry has the majority of my matches so this is amazing. The community update I will look out for however I wonder if they can go back further for our communities?? Some of us come from VERY old families in the U.S. and North America going back over 500 years to Europe but are missing the community connection from Europe. It is erased for us so I don't have matches in Europe at all and I should considering we are mostly European and have relatively recent ancestors from the 1700's. It seems the communities stop working in Europe around the 1890's or so that leaves only relatives in North America most of which is already well documented and known. For instance "My Heritage" shows my European cousins but ancestry still does not? :)

    • @MissSilencedogood
      @MissSilencedogood 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep! That is what I mean ancestry told me that 300 years is too far back for communities in the U.S. they will not have communities in Europe which could help us verify and or break through brick walls with cousins in Europe. Your colonial ancestors will only show up as being from the areas you have recent cousins in the United States.This is common in colonial families with endogamy. That is also our problem. We are from Spanish colonies in the U.S. since the 1500's-1780's aprox who intermarried relentlessly due to the caste system. What is extra tricky is many of them moved from Spain directly to the U.S. so early on the only community they have is from their own region nothing no communities in Spain or even Mexico on one side at all only the U.S.. From what I am hearing from other users is that people from Quebec and other long lived families with origins in Europe have this problem with the communities tool. Ancestry also informed me that Ancestry JUST STARTED testing in Spain! :/ That means no cousins will show up to create communities. To me that was unbelievable. France had limitations of DNA testing legally but Spain did not. They just didn't test there. That is why all my European cousins are on Myhertiage. but trying to figure out who they are in relation to me without a family tree is near impossible. My only hope is to figure out who they are related to and HOPE they have an ancestry account or a family tree. At least now with the new tool this might be a game changer to help with this limited access to European cousins on ancestry. I am hopeful :D ! @@sm_makai

I have to pay an additional $120 a year to use family group sheets that used to be free?!?! Additionally, so much of the truly useful content is uploaded by other users. (Photos, documents, links to articles, etc.) I am currently working on downloading the documents I can only get there and then I am finished with the un-ending gouging of Ancestry. If the had said they were going to change the parent 1/parent 2 labels to maternal/paternal and use the technology they obviously have access to tell users which parent a match links to then a lot of new, inexperienced and casual users might be tempted to become more involved. Many don't know how to work it out and in an adoption/unknown parent scenario it could be almost impossible without some help from someone who knows how to work with matches.
    If that maternal/paternal detail was extended so I could look a match and know which of their parents the link is through I'd have a real incentive to follow up on that match, it would encourage collaboration and use of that lame group message 'feature' we keep being told about and earn a few subscribers along the way. There's an argument to say it could even make the dna tools package worth looking at and give Ancestry something to shout about beyond having the biggest database.

We pay a lot of money, especially for world wide access, newspapers and Fold 3 so why should we have to wait months? And while I am here, can I also mention the tendency for Ancestry to assume everything happens in the US? I teach family history to people in Scotland, and I have to explain to them that when they are looking at results from their searches when using family trees, they should look at those results that have their ancestors dying in the US because Ancestry assumes that Aberdeen Scotland is Aberdeen in Western Washington. The town of Hamilton is in Lanarkshire, Scotland but as far as Ancestry is concerned, it is always in Madison County, New York. @@tomask1436
