- How has the catfish - the largest freshwater fish in Europe that terrorizes pikes, pigeons and even bathers - progressively colonized all rivers without eliminating any other species?
Originally from the rivers of Eastern Europe, catfish have colonized almost all European lakes, canals and rivers since 1950. By the time they are adults, these giants have no competition and sit at the top of the aquatic food chain. Shads, pikes and ducks, all are prey to this rapacious fish. The catfish adapts quickly and has even learnt to beach itself on purpose in order to catch pigeons! It has become Europe’s largest freshwater fish, even longer and heavier than the fishermen who have aided its conquest.
In its native habitat, where the animal is fished for food, the catfish is not considered a problem species. There, populations appear to have remained relatively stable for decades, with little evidence of excessive predation on other native fish. But in newly inhabited rivers, these aquatic invaders are targeting endangered and commercially important migratory fish, such as Atlantic salmon, whose European populations are already in serious decline
Three years were needed to complete this film which employs state of the art digital technology (ultra slow motion cameras, high-sensitivity underwater cameras and photo-realistic CGI) to depict this animal, which has become both a social menace and the object of fantasies.

Welp...I eat catfish in Ohio but not the very large one. I had the opportunity to see a very large one my father caught a few years ago and was shocked but I'm sure it made my dad's day since he's a serious fisher so this was nothing to him

Well catfish turn into Volkswagens then Mercury's. It's only a matter of time before they turn into ford f-250's. Just kidding Lynn I couldn't help myself.
We have them all over in the Mississippi River in USA, there's some the size of small Volkswagens down there
The US record unbeaten since 1998 is a flathead cat with 61 inches and 123 pounds.... not near a small volkswagen. the european record cats over 120 inches with over 300 pounds. not even that is a volkswagen.
The narrator is horrible. Anyways, it's a shame how here where these catfish are native they are not nearly as big as in places where they have been introduced. The biggest I've caught here in Danube was 13,5 kg and I've been catching them all my life. They are good to eat, at least the small ones.
i fish the danube in austria. there are loads of 2m+ in there....
@@Ruebezahl07 i fish further downstream, around Belgrade. There is a poaching mafia here. They work together with bribed rangers. If you try to stop them, they shoot you. The same goes with wildlife, wild birds, truffles, trees in forests. As for the fish stocks, they are depleted, most catfish here are around 0,.5-1 kg. Such fish are sold in marketplaces, they are served in restaurants, the government doesn't care. I quit angling, I wait for better times.
@@mrznjaci yea thats fucked up... hope it gets better for you down the river👍. Danube commercial fishing is nearley nonexistent here. And for poachers its very hard. Here the problem is more that the River is very straightend out. They are reviving old sidearms since some time.... but the best predator to fish for is the som. It does not care how the river is. The Stuka is very rare in the main river.... smuge is ok.
