TYTD Reviews I definitely plan on it! (Eventually) sometime after Hatchet, Pumpkinhead and maybe Lake Placid/Anaconda. It might be a few years from now 😂
I know right!? When I saw it for the first time I was exactly the same, in many ways I kind of wondered what all the fuss was about. But then that ending hits and Bloody hell! it changes the entire context of the film and made the re-watch SO much more engaging as I noticed all the little nods and winks to the big end reveal. I think this ones only now starting to really gain a bit of ground and appreciation with it having a wider release than previous decades. but I think it's still pretty underrated in terms of just how solid and influential it was to the slasher genre.
I got Desiree Gould's email off IMDB. She replies within like less than two days. I've emailed her a couple times. "She's" cool as. For some reason she told me that living room they were in was really nice and she really liked the wallpaper??? I told her Happy St. Patrick's Day. And that my wife and I were married on Halloween with a Sleepaway Camp vibe by a river. Meet Desiree at the waterfront after the social.
Oh man thats awesome! 😮 She's possibly one of my favourite Slasher "Villains" just for how eccentric her performance is in this movie! it's great to hear she's cool in real life too as I know a few actors/actresses can be a bit dismissive of slasher and horror work. And oh man! that wedding theme sounds brilliant too! Im currently wedding planning myself at the minute so I may try and float that one with my partner and see what she says! I imagine it must have had some beatiful views :)
Actually I think that The House on Sorority Row was inspired by Prom Night more than any of those other franchises. Although The Prowler is definitely a Friday the 13th rip off, but it is way better as it is scarier, better structured, and has better kills.
I don’t remember why my friend and I watched this one say, not our kind of film, but we were really unimpressed. And then the ending. THAT... got our attention. All in all, this couldn’t hold a candle to Ring of Death.
I always tell people! Clarke Paylowes Ring of Terror is the movie that Sleepaway Camp aspires to be! then I break out "The Drawings" to prove my point and it becomes less a conversation and more a fist fight to get aaway from me...but one day they'll learn! And I'd agree with you that the twist definitely "Makes" the movie. Though what struck me were the little illusions to the twist subtly dropped throughout the film. just those little moments where the film starts asking questions of itself really helped beef up the script to me... plus some really nice dialogue moments just helped it along a bit more. Is it a perfect movie? No...I dont think it is. but for a slasher movie, I really kind of dig this one...and contextually within the genre I think it's quite an important film as it continued to push the boundaries that movies like the F13 series and "The Burning" were already rapidly trying to establish :)
Great review as always. Sleepaway Camp is a film I wathched very often when I was younger. Never knew the anchor bay boxset was cut, will have to upgrade, thanks for the info.
Hay! thanks so much for tuning in man :) its so cool to hear from people who grew up watching these! did you have the VHS or the anchor bay set? and glad I could help!, the Anchor Bay set is less cut than the original VHS release but if your looking for a Region 2/B uncut copy I can definitely reccommend the spanish import, it's super cheap and while it is light on extras (There isnt really any) it's a good price for what it is and a decent enough way to own this if you just want the uncut movie cleaned up in HD. www.amazon.es/gp/product/B0119H2RU8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@TYTDReviews I still have the old Anchor Bay DVD set, but will definitely be picking up the Spanish blu ray. Hopefully the the UK will receive a blu ray this film deserves, would make a great Arrow Video release.
I don’t agree with a lot of what you say, but the film is definitely interesting I will give you that. The shot composition is unintetesting to my eyes, the acting is questionable aside from Ricky, Angela, and Judy, and the writing is actually pretty decent and is probably the strongest aspect of the film. It isn’t one of the better slasher films in my eyes but it is definitely interesting.
Seeing this as a young teenager in the 80s, I loved this one, always wanted a summer camp experience but never got it. This had lots of fun characters well acted one of the all-time classic finales. Seeing it now, I still love it. Shame part 2 and 3 went so silly but I can get some enjoyment out of those. Return was a nostalgic fun mess but horrible movie. I bought that Anchor Bay set on release day back when I worked in a Sam Goody store (music, movies, books), I have since handed it down to my nephew since it's a collectible and he has a massive collection.
hay man thanks for sharing this, it's so cool to hear stories of the horror staples being passed down and the journey you've been on with these films :) Here in the UK we didnt have summer camps (Or rather; only the poshest of the posh in the southern coastal towns had them) instead we had Summer activity clubs, usually 4 weeks worth of daily activities where you travelled in, did a treasure hunt, or an obstical course or something similar and then went home at the end of the day. usually there was a theme (Cowboys and Indians, Pirates, Astronaughts and Aliens) but they were all good fun! though I always wanted to try the "Proper" summer camp experience of the cabins, the lakes, the awkward summer romances. All that good stuff! from people I've spoken to it sounds like a hoot! I'll be covering all of the rest of the movies in this series over the next month or so, so i'll save my feelings on the other movies for a later time. But I pretty much solidly agree with what you've said on them, 2 and 3 definitely have a very distinct charm thats different to why I love this movie. Return to Sleepaway Camp?...Wellllllllllll Lets just say I wasnt 100% smitten with it 😂 Great to hear from you as always man!
@@TYTDReviews This was the camp pretty close to me and where I could have went. (I live in central Kentucky, US) It's a Christian Camp, and I just assumed it wasn't my thing. I consider myself a Christian but not into this kind of thing. My friends that did go informed me later that they had the typical experiences I was looking for. So I did miss out. www.whitemillschristiancamp.com/

Fantastic review!!
Much appreciated sir! You should totally do an SG on this one! I really dont fancy my odds on making it to the end of this picture in one piece xD

When I first watched this I felt it was a decent slasher entry but then the ending. Oh my. One that has always stuck with me. Great review.
