Hey Red, just curious friend. Where do you get your chord voicings from? Would you ever mess with Jazz Harmony? Maybe a little Bill Evans type stuff? Love your work dude, I live for your OP videos :P
I mess around until it sounds right? I really wish I knew proper chord voicings, especially jazz stuff, but as it is my music theory is a little stunted.
Stunted or not some of the harmonies you use sound pretty hip, it's nice to hear stuff like that in electronic music :) If you ever wanna learn Jazz stuff I'd be totally down to help you do it, (I'm Jazz piano major at uni)
I love the narration and animation you put into your videos. It's apparent how much care and love you put into your videos, it's really nice to see that (:
+Red Means Recording (Jeremy Leaird-Koch) seriously, something about your videos makes me smile (: I like to think it's because of your personality that shows through your videos
a lot of Beethoven and Mozart's work was in B flat, and a few years ago NASA were able to measure the frequency of a black hole 250 million light years away in the Persues cluster that was emitting a B flat 57 octaves below middle C. there is some theory that there is a connection and that the universe as a whole likes to resonate in B flat
www.scientificamerican.com/article/strange-but-true-black-holes-sing and it wasn't a collection of frequencies with harmonic overtones, just a straight B flat. I think I liked it cos I thought "the universe resonates in B flat" would be an awesome title for a song/album. plus i'm a closet cosmology nerd in fact if you believe in string theory all matter (and certain types of energy) in the universe is essentially a collection of vibrations
always when playing things back through my speakers in B flat, my desk would resonate and shake and make the bass extremely loud... only with B flat, that is. And I've tried that shit with other speakers and on other desks. I don't know about the universe resonating in B flat, but my downstairs neighbors' heads definitely do
@PurpleLizard 23 I'm glad it's ok. It is really a rare occurence to have such a kind conversation online. However I have already noticed that community here is great. @Kirill Heifez Yeah, the price is crazy, for now I'll stick with my guitar and an old keyboard, but in the future... Who knows... :D
Great video. Love the text! It’s you talking to us but feels almost like a voice from the ether speaking directly into my head on behalf of the music. Love that you used Chuckoo’s preset pack. You turned me on to his channel through references to him and I’m so thankful you did!
Might be my favorite one yet, that offbeat snare is perfect. Great work as always, with the music, the commentary, the video editing. It's inspirational (and a bit intimidating) to watch these :)
Ah, it's just that old feeling of Impostor Syndrome kicking in. Just gotta power through and keep on making things. If you don't mind me asking, how do you set up your camera and stuff? Considering that Head gets in the way once in a while, seems to be way up high pointed downward. Still trying to find a good way to clearly off what I'm doing and also keep things nice and zoomed in.
Gotcha! The jam I did a few weeks ago had the same setup, but my table was too damn wobbly and things shook a lot. Next time, I must use a better table :)
This is the most meta episode yet. Also, that release though ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Edit: Btw, the beat process part was relatable. Takes forever to find it JUST RIGHT. The "Here it comes" part was orgasmic... but you didn't hear that from me.
For quite some time I have been struggling with having motivation to get up and create music. I just wanted to let you know that your music is really inspirational to me, and being able to watch you construct your songs from the ground up helps get the cogs in my brain turning. Thank you for blessing all of us viewers with such awesome music!
Jeremy, bad news, that low pass filter you lended to me, I lost it. Could I return an equal or greater portion of some other object back to you? My regards
This is one of those videos that makes you wanna buy one and then realise actually it is the talent that makes these tracks sound good, not the device itself alone :D
I've watched this so many times before. But I came back to this by accident while going through your OP-Z videos. Was the pick me up that I just needed. Cheers Jeremy!
I may only be just a modest poor musician. Yet I must say it's inspiring to watch you through your journey. Keep doing what you do best music is the soul of life. Keep feeding that life into the world with your music. Don't ever stop!
I started watching your videos because I'm in awe with the OP-1 user interface… but I kept watching because of your entertaining style and the awesome music you get out of this plastic thingy…
Your videos are like sitting down with an crazy friend having a cup of tea and listening to yet another crazy story. Along with all the "Wow I would never have come up with that" and the "Wow I would've never dared to do it like that" and a good laugh too. Thanks for that
Getting obsessed with these videos.... I'm thinking about trying the same thing except with my MPC Live. I have a question though, do you record the whole session into Ableton and with video and than just trim the fat off? Don't mean to bite your style too hard, it'll be a little different with some live guitar, etc, I'm just super surprised by what you do and inspired, my channel is dedicated to Ukulele education and I think my learners would get a kick out of a blend of some of these ideas.
+Red Means Recording (Jeremy Leaird-Koch) but seriously, do you know what red means? I'm trying to become enlightened and all I've figured out so far is that mayonnaise can actually be an instrument if you know the right people.
Most of them, not at all. I sit down, hit keys, browse sounds, and then see what starts to take hold. Then it's all about playing on those themes. For the next OP-1 video I practiced during the week because I wanted to figure out some chord progressions that were beyond my current skill, but mostly it's all just on the fly.
Pasht: this kind of thing is as much a skill as it is a talent. It's learning to know what you like and what you don't. It's getting comfortable with whipping up ideas quickly and not being shy about trashing ideas that don't fit.
To add onto that, look up "Creative Exploration - Learn to Fail" for an old video of mine talking about failing should be ENCOURAGED when making things. You learn through failures, even though it's frustrating. If you aren't making mistakes, you're not challenging yourself enough. :)
Watching this near end of 2020. Makes me really wanna burn my wallets with the OP-1. God send me a low pass filter to shake this Sorcery! Thank you Jeremy for always making my day.
I wasn't liking this as much but I reopened the video and it brought me straight to the middle of the song when it got crazy and now this song is everything.

Red Means Recording thanks for the nice high quality videos and music :)

Every episode feels a like story.
A story that lets you to escape reality for a little while, a tainted bitter reality. I would live in red means recording world if it existed... :/
Lewis Matthews but it does exist, as long as you watch the video you can enter the red means recording world.
FanamyRoo How does he?
I have no idea how this sorcery works. *But it's freaking cool, and this song is awesome.*
Your like the Bob Ross of music
A little late but I recently started showing my wife these videos since I found the channel yesterday and I described him the same exact way lol
Were going to have a nice synth right here, and everyone needs a friend so we’re going to put down a little bass
Mistakes are ok because you can Quantize them
this thread is a small gem stashed in a forgotten coat pocket
Lol no
why are these videos so damn calming? like damn. I just wanna chill and pet kittens now
i also wish to pet kittens please send kittens
I can totally tell that, even through text alone, you're an hilarious person. Keep that up, this sad world needs more funny people.
this TH-cam channel is maybe the only one where i read the comments and everyone seems to be high for some reason.
FOR SOME REASON
then maybe you shouldn't check out customgrow420
We _are_ high. On Red Means Recording :-)
MrSuicideSheep's comments are similarly high
wuh?
I love the narration and animation you put into your videos. It's apparent how much care and love you put into your videos, it's really nice to see that (:
+Red Means Recording (Jeremy Leaird-Koch) seriously, something about your videos makes me smile (: I like to think it's because of your personality that shows through your videos
Gottfried Gehberger exact same thought! i enjoy watching the whole videos!
+Gottfried Gehberger that makes me happy to hear
a lot of Beethoven and Mozart's work was in B flat, and a few years ago NASA were able to measure the frequency of a black hole 250 million light years away in the Persues cluster that was emitting a B flat 57 octaves below middle C. there is some theory that there is a connection and that the universe as a whole likes to resonate in B flat
+theycallmejpj holy shit what, Haha. That is awesome.

Then let it be known that trumpets are the best instrument in the universe, only second to flugal horns ;)
tenor sax tho
Oh hell yeah! I discovered this channel just yesterday and I love all of this stuff. You got me more interested in synths, now I want my own OP-1 :D
Welcome
Well, hello there! How is your day going?
TheLord9000 It is doing good!
+TheLord9000 hello and welcome!
i've clearly discovered these a little late, but man do i love this video series :)
I need a shirt that says "rad means sadmorning"
This might be my favorite of your OP-1 songs actually. Epic groove!
Great video. Love the text! It’s you talking to us but feels almost like a voice from the ether speaking directly into my head on behalf of the music. Love that you used Chuckoo’s preset pack. You turned me on to his channel through references to him and I’m so thankful you did!
"Have you tried a low pass filter? Life can be harsh without one."
Genius
Might be my favorite one yet, that offbeat snare is perfect. Great work as always, with the music, the commentary, the video editing. It's inspirational (and a bit intimidating) to watch these :)
don't be intimidated frend! and yeah, love that offbeat rhythm.

Sturdy keyboard stand plus something like this (www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10251352/) works great.
Damn this is so very fine!
Thanks for showing your workflow, and the captions make me smile!
+jemgel thank you friend
Oh my freaken’ stars!!!!! I listened to another of your tracks and then this. This is beyond stunning. And we got to feel the process !!! Amazing
Alright I need a shirt that says:
Smol
Soft
Smoft
Smorft
Smorlft
Smorflrtt
Smorlftorlg
I don't know why, but this song just evokes.. happiness. It makes me feel good. It's good to just vibe to when you're not doing anything!
This is the most meta episode yet.
Also, that release though ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
Edit: Btw, the beat process part was relatable. Takes forever to find it JUST RIGHT. The "Here it comes" part was orgasmic... but you didn't hear that from me.
+HYPER HAZARD is it weird to say I love this song? I love this song.
🌶️🌶️🌶️
This is my favourite song that you've made dude, do you think maybe you could release a vocal-less version?
For quite some time I have been struggling with having motivation to get up and create music. I just wanted to let you know that your music is really inspirational to me, and being able to watch you construct your songs from the ground up helps get the cogs in my brain turning. Thank you for blessing all of us viewers with such awesome music!
Jeremy, bad news, that low pass filter you lended to me, I lost it. Could I return an equal or greater portion of some other object back to you? My regards
+TheSlightEuphoric if you have a resonant bandpass or z-plane those are acceptable :)
I have large quantities of food and some cooking skill, could that suffice as a suitable substitute?
OK FINE :)
You can probably get a new one from Sainsbury's … at least that's where Beardyman gets his filters.
Dude, the stuff you do is literally straight up magic. Every video I watch I love your music more and more!
I miss Octocat.
Francisco Padilla Too bad Octocat doesn't miss you :/
I'm sure she's off "making more friends"
We all do :(
Octocat!
Hey Octocat, I have a FACE!.... wont you come back here ?? (:b>)
I really love everything about your videos. The music, the style, the comedy - it's all gold!
Really impressed!
Like usual, you don't make just cool tracks you also teaching me on OP-1.. thank you!
+Mauro Invernici happy to teach!!
This is one of those videos that makes you wanna buy one and then realise actually it is the talent that makes these tracks sound good, not the device itself alone :D
I love your attitude, and the beats are ssssoo chill
I've watched this so many times before. But I came back to this by accident while going through your OP-Z videos. Was the pick me up that I just needed. Cheers Jeremy!
You always make me think that this is easy.
I absolutely love the interface on the op 1, it's so stylized and fun
you seem like one of the most genuinely friendly and terrifically talented people out there, good job, i'm in love with your jams
thank you zaida
First time ever I see my computer screen like an Spectrum loading a game.
Great job, keep it up! (And thanks for the discovery of Jellyfish Nozzle!)
Listening to the music you create just makes me want to play Sonic the Hedgehog on N64, or like watch A Goofy Movie - I love it.
I may only be just a modest poor musician. Yet I must say it's inspiring to watch you through your journey. Keep doing what you do best music is the soul of life. Keep feeding that life into the world with your music. Don't ever stop!
Another great video. Loving the vibe of this track and the visuals with it!
thanks, really happy with brian's contribution too!
I started watching your videos because I'm in awe with the OP-1 user interface… but I kept watching because of your entertaining style and the awesome music you get out of this plastic thingy…
+Markus Birth it is a very engaging interface!
Still give me that smile listening :)
:):)
Still one of my favorites!
15:40 - just.... wooooooow! love this!
the audio representations at the end were incredible. i love it
3:53 and on.. HOLY SHIT THAT BEAT YES
Your videos are like sitting down with an crazy friend having a cup of tea and listening to yet another crazy story.
Along with all the "Wow I would never have come up with that" and the "Wow I would've never dared to do it like that" and a good laugh too. Thanks for that
+Jaïr Berdenis van Berlekom aha, that is awesome
i get my op-1 in two days, i can't wait!!
hell yes
Still have it? How did it turn out? 😀
dude that shellsort reference made my week. flashback to 2nd year data structures and algorithms.
Dude is lending out his low pass filter, still everyone in the comments is high
Your rhythms are infectious! So smooth...
Any suggestions on where to find the best deal on an OP-1? I'm working all summer for it
+Matt Kirchhoefer reverb.com for used. New, directly from TE or you most reputable music store. Where do you live?
Red Means Recording Missouri, not a ton of places that sell synths around here lol
Guitar center has been getting them in stock recently, but the best bet is amazon or TE themselves.
Lewis Isn't Funny I will stop by Wednesday and check it out!
Place i got mine from offered 0% finance for 12 and 9 months, that was in the UK tho doubt the US will be any different.
I still listening it at 2021, and i still get the same vibe since i heard it the first time..
MAGIC!
I want one of these but they're so eEXPENSIVE
Didn't know I needed this song till I heard it. Absolutely stunning!
Reminds me of fez a little. This is dope
ye same
That was Disasterpeace, right? Love that person's work. Was pretty dope he did the It Follows soundtrack too.
Red Means Recording yeah! He also did Hyperlight drifter. He's also doing another soundtrack for the director of it follows
HYPE
Everything this channel puts it reminds me of a more upbeat Disasterpeace! I love it. Have you ever considered making soundtracks for games?
just discovered this channel and what you're doing on that op-1... whoa, my ears are melting
you dear sir, just got a new subscriber.
I find your style of video making quite interesting, and make some hell'a lit tunes!
hell yes welcome and thanks
I keep coming back to this song...
That capcom jingle at the start; Now I have Megaman X title theme playing in my head..
+Friendly Metroid yay my work here is done.
Dude it was instantaneous for me too.
I could watch these videos all day. They are so calming, and funny, and teach so much. Ned leads a herring.
:)
Getting obsessed with these videos.... I'm thinking about trying the same thing except with my MPC Live. I have a question though, do you record the whole session into Ableton and with video and than just trim the fat off? This is sooo damn good. I’ll be jamming to this for days. Great job 👏
I'm kinda stuck on what red means, but I do know that lead eats DiGiorno.
ahahaha
+Red Means Recording (Jeremy Leaird-Koch) but seriously, do you know what red means? I'm trying to become enlightened and all I've figured out so far is that mayonnaise can actually be an instrument if you know the right people.
I'm going to sell my OP-1 to purchase mayonnaise.
Also red means sopecmw9ejw09e40hoi2qeb b~!
+Red Means Recording (Jeremy Leaird-Koch) thank you kind sir. also, how much mayonaise are you thinking about at this point? (purely hypothetical)
Assuming I can get $700 for the OP-1, somewhere around 5250 ounces.
Thanks for keeping me company while I was doing my house cleaning. I cranked through most of your songs.
Video is too ambiguous. Am I having a good or bad day?
I HOPE IT IS GOOD
yes.
yes in confirmation.
Hands down my favorite piece you have created in this series.
+WaLter .NO nice, thank you
reading the text is like reading two harry potter books
This track is making me so happy I've no idea why :o
Thanks for doing what you're doing, this is amazing !
The intro reminded me of animal collective. Sweet.
The first few notes you play immediately took me back to the Twin Peaks Theme for some beautiful reason. Red means damn good strong black coffee.
+Matthew Williams nice :):)
Love this one! Great drum pattern. I have to ask, how much of these songs are in your head or on paper before you start recording?
Most of them, not at all. I sit down, hit keys, browse sounds, and then see what starts to take hold. Then it's all about playing on those themes. For the next OP-1 video I practiced during the week because I wanted to figure out some chord progressions that were beyond my current skill, but mostly it's all just on the fly.
That's so damn impressive. I would murder people (not really - am a pacifist) for that kind of easy creativity.
Pasht: this kind of thing is as much a skill as it is a talent. It's learning to know what you like and what you don't. It's getting comfortable with whipping up ideas quickly and not being shy about trashing ideas that don't fit.
VERY MUCH TRASHING! I throw a ton away and fail a lot during the filming of these, I just don't put it on screen. :)
To add onto that, look up "Creative Exploration - Learn to Fail" for an old video of mine talking about failing should be ENCOURAGED when making things. You learn through failures, even though it's frustrating. If you aren't making mistakes, you're not challenging yourself enough. :)
Finally got time to sit down and listen to some more of your stuff. This is purely awesomely adventurous!
Man, I really hope I get an opportunity to talk music with you someday. Your jams inspire me if I have trouble piecing together a song.
thank you jake, that makes me happy
Thank you for being a tasteful creator
Love the voice clips in the final track! Red means recording... means listening... means happiness :-)
+Greg Robson 👏👏😂😂❤️❤️
Red means stop boiling. Your crab cooked ƪ(°⌣°)
This video was so good I immediately ordered a shirt and sticker.
6:17 rip headphone users
Never cease to amaze!! I'm so glad I found this channel
Hold on a sec I gotta practice my dad
The world looks red! You just get better, Better and BETTER.
When you said i like my lead sounds like i like my women, for some reason i thought you were gonna say “without a penis”
One of my favourites... amazing work as ever.
That moments when the pads came in :o Made it feel like I was on the beach, instead of looking at it. Love this session, keep it up!
Cheers!
+Lakloplak awesome, thank you
Your style of music is freaking awesome man I love it... Keep up the high quality work :)
This is the perfect start to anyone's day... Inspiring, uplifting and great ear candy all in one... 😋
This is my favourite. Love the bass lines! Amazing work!!!
just bought it, so good!!! keep up the good work, you're one of my favorite youtubers!!
thank you friend!
If I had a spare £800 kicking about, I would buy this device tomorrow. It amazes me how creative and powerful it is!
It's so cool watching you make music on the OP-1, but my favorite part will always be the hilarious subtitles. Keep it up!
+A.J. Coley thank you aj
Thank you for mesmerizing me and sucking me into a timeless bubble yet again, Mr. Red Means Recording!
That bass sound is magical
This song f'ing rules so hard. Making my Monday suck way less at work.
So I was on TE’s site, started watching this vid, and felt a deep need to come over here and tell you this is amazing.
Second drop is legitimately dope! This track turned out realllll nice.
Wow! how orbitalishly that sounds! ah, the kitten blanket - my fave soundbite ever.
Those visuals melted my face. It's okay.
Watching this near end of 2020. Makes me really wanna burn my wallets with the OP-1. God send me a low pass filter to shake this Sorcery!
Thank you Jeremy for always making my day.
classic Capcom intro jingle made me smile. rest of the episode is fantastic too!
this is such a great skill to sit down and let your mind go and come up with a piece of music
I wasn't liking this as much but I reopened the video and it brought me straight to the middle of the song when it got crazy and now this song is everything.
haha nice
So glad my sister found you! This is mesmerising. Bet I could meditate to it.
This is amazing. A lost Orbital track. Love it!
