      1 kcal is roughly 1wh. As he produced 21wh, that is about the amount of calories he burnt. But humans are not 100% efficient in converting food into energy. Actually only about 25% make it into our bloodstream. It just so happens that a slice of toast is abot 70-80kcal. Ergo he burnt of the equivalent of that toast while burning that toast.
      Maths is fun :D

      Yes, it does take slightly longer if two slices are loaded into the toaster. But I suspect Robert would still have been good for it, especially if they allowed him to pedal at a more efficient cadence. He was down to 60 rpm at the end, which is far too slow for a sprinter.

      And the human body is!

    • @Kiboxxx
      @Kiboxxx 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      If we ASSUME, the only energy loss of the bike is friction in the gears, we could assume that it´s efficiency is like 99 % (because modern gears are quite efficient). However, in order to convert the mechanical energy into an electrical one, you need a generator. So this experiment would just prove how efficient the used generator is. Also, if you are using a bike to move from point a to point b, there is also rolling resistance, wind resistance and all that stuff. Which part in the video got you the conclusion that bicycles are efficient?
      As for the human body: 0,021 kWh are equivalent to 18 kcal of food. Is that now efficient that the body burnt 1/4 slice of bread in 2 minutes? I really don´t see on what criteria you base your assumptions.

Some super jock in our class was able to blow the bulb out but even he was extremely tired just from 30 seconds of doing it. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to output 700 watts for a minute.
    It would probably be easier to hook up a super capacitor to the bike and let him output 300-400 watts where he could do it for half an hour or more.

      It was at a construction fair aka trade show and to tell people about the energy efficiency of LEDs VS incandescent or halogen bulbs they had a bike with a switch that could be used to choose which bulb to power: A colorful pool LED one or a bunch or MR16 12 volt halogen ones.
      Lighting the LEDs was really easy, however the halogens were another story.

    What a really cool demonstration.❤ There are so many different perspectives to take from this video. Something I've been noticing lately is an underemphasis on all of us using less energy in ways large and small.
    I was born in 1963 and I remember during the " energy crisis of the 70's there was an emphasis on using less energy. Turning lights out, lowering furnace thermostat, 55 mph national speed limit etc., Today there isn't an emphasis on us using less energy like back then. The emphasis seems to be how can we create more energy ie.. wind,waves,solar, geothermal,nuclear, petroleum etc.
    We of course should continue with exploring, experimenting ,playing with all these methods of extracting energy because our lives seem to depend on it.
    This video, from just one of many perspectives, demonstrates how much energy is required for the many ways we consume it. This video, for me , emphasizes my need to drive slower, put a sweater on, turn out the lights when I leave the room, put my device on battery saver mode and any other thing I can think of to use less energy.
    Ironically I discovered this video, because when I was at the Y sweating my ass off trying to stay strong and healthy, I looked around at all my fellow exercises and thought, why don't we generate a little electricity while we're doing this? Even if it's just enough to power the screens every machine has.
    I guess it's not feasible.

    • @periodictable118
      @periodictable118 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah the electricity that even a gym full of elite athletes would generate long-term would pale in comparison with the even just the energy needed to keep the lights running. But fun fact: If you live in a area where the temperature outside is cold, the heat generated from exercise will offset some of the heating requirements for the building (even if only very, very slightly).

      @@seshpenguin the heat going into the toast would mean the elements would be a slightly lower temperature, which would lower their resistance, which would draw more current.

    Pro tip: increase efficiency 100% by putting in two pieces of bread.

    • @danielelvebak2580
      @danielelvebak2580 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      How would having two slices of bread increase efficiency? They'd both only be toasted on one side, assuming they'd even fit.

      If it was only a one slotted toaster would it need less power and therefor be easier too cook? I dont actually know so can someone tell me

      yup, assuming that this was actually rigged up properly, which I doubt, to an AC generator then the less resistance there was (i.e. the higher the wattage at a given voltage), the higher the resistance to his cycling. u can see this if u get a motor, if u spin it then there is no resistance but if you connect the two ires to each other and then spin it, u get more resistance as you speed up the rate of rotation

      I've always said the same thing about cars, DOUBLE the efficiency of your vehicle by riding with a passenger, instead of alone.

    I've put out about 700 watts on an exercise bike. I couldn't maintain it for 15 seconds and I think I have pretty good legs. It's absurdly tiring. The fact he did it for nearly 2 minutes is mind-boggling.

      I cycled for the first time in 3 years last week and managed to put out an average of 230 Watts over 5 minutes with a max output of 365W, holy shit, that wrecked my legs, but felt good as hell.

      The even more crazy thing is that you have to take the energy conversion loss (kinetic->electrical->heat energy probably like 90% effeciency which is VERY good for conversions) into account as well, so to get around 700 W to the toaster you need probably close to 800 W from the bike. So basically he put out at least 800 W for like more than 2 mins (I dont think they showed the whole footage) which is insane...

    I’ve seen some idea forums mention that gyms should use the their exercise bikes to help power the building. This should give you an idea of how infeasible that is.
