  • Quick sketches are ideal to help when visualising the look of a picture in graphite pencil. This is a great help when trying to decide on the best composition and where to build contrast into the drawing. In the first of a new series I will be working on a sketch of an Ostrich.

Where do you usually get photos to draw? Is it your own photography or from internet? I wanna get photos from google but Im afraid pf copyrights. Btw this is so great! Im a fan sir :) thank you for this, I will try this one.

Hi, Thank-you so much for the comment. I generally use my own photographs or ones from friends as this way it avoids any copyright issues but there are sites on the internet which do do royalty free images. I haven't used these but one that I have heard many people talk about is Pixabay and they do royalty free images. Also if you see a particular photographer's images that you like it may be worth contacting them as some are quite willing to let you use some images. Alternatively, they may not do this but it is always worth asking them. It is also a good idea to make sure you have written permission when using any photographer's work to avoid any copyright issues further down the line. I hope this is of help, Jamie

Hello Jamie! Amazing work like always. You always make it look so easy my friend. I'd like to know what brand of pencil you're using for this sketch and the paper you mainly draw on. I just ordered Strathmore 300 velum and I also ordered some paper in black. I want to try some new techniques.

Hi Nathan, Thank-you so much. The pencils I use are the Caran d'ACHE Grafwoods. The ones used in this video was an H for the initial drawing and a 6B for the rest of the sketch. For my other more detailed pictures the pencils I use in every picture are 4H, H, 2B and 9B plus I'll usually use a couple of others, for example another picture that I'm working on at the moment I've also used a 4B and F.
In terms of paper the Ostrich sketch was drawn on a paper sample that I was given to try and is going to be imported by Jakar. This is relatively inexpensive and is 40% cotton. This makes it ideal for anybody on a budget or who is just learning to draw.
The main papers I use for my more detailed work are St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford 300g and Arches Aquarelle 356g. Both are Hot Press and 100% cotton . The St Cuthbert's is a little bit softer than the Arches. They both take the indentation technique that I use well but the Arches is incredibly tough so it is a little bit harder to work. I hope this helps. Jamie

@@JamieBoots Wow! I'm totally lost for words. I've Never had anyone respond with such detail before. I know you're probably very busy but I want to thank you very much for taking time out of your day to respond. I'm a Disabled Veteran and I just started drawing about 8 months ago. I had to find something to do with all my time cause I was going nuts sitting here doing nothing. I have PTSD, ANXIETY AND ADHD. That's enough crap to drive anyone Crazy lol. I found your page a few months ago and I have to say I can't get enough of your videos. You're my #1 Artist and I'm trying my best to learn your techniques. I don't wanna take up your day with my chatter. I just wanna say Thank You very much for you and your videos. Keep them coming. Amazing Work!!!

@@CaneCorso1 It is so nice to hear that you're enjoying the videos and have found them useful. It is also great to get a comment like this and it makes making the videos so worthwhile. Drawing definitely takes time and really does provide a good focus. I found when I started drawings took hours, which soon changed to days and then to months as the pictures became more detailed. If you do need any advice please feel free to ask as I am always glad to be of help. Again, thank you so much for such a great comment. Jamie
