Everyone wants to find some evil intent but sometimes stupidity is the explanation. I can totally imagine these guys were intoxicated and rather than driving they decided to try to sober up first and just fell asleep. One thing not mentioned about hypothermia is the victim will begin to feel warm and extremely sleepy and alcohol brings on the effect of hypothermia more rapidly despite common wisdom that alcohol will warm up a person.

He is dead right about drinking is just enough. When in a warm bar drinking and it's the end of the night everyone goes outside in the cold you start to see the alcohol take quicker effect on some people and where they were inside dancing and fine outside after 5 minutes, they are on the ground fully drunk and cannot even stand up or walking around not even able to walk a straight line or hold balance. Do that in freezing conditions and with no help your dead.
