Newport Beach Locals Test A Few 70's Surfboards With Neighborhood History | SURFER Magazine

- When Bird Huffman, of “Bird’s Surf Shed,” was asked to choose some boards from his collection for the punchy beachbreaks of Newport Beach, he stuck with a motif of drive-y, flat and thick designs. Boards, that after a couple strokes, will have a surfer racing through a hollow pocket.
Young guns Tyler Gunter and Finn McGill experienced the highly effective planing elements of a 5’2″ kneeboard-esque twin fin. A chunky yet complex little board that seems to go 0-100 instantly with no way to bleed-off speed.
Despite never really catching on in California, Ben Aipa’s mid-70s “Sting” design surprised Newport local Bobby Okvist with how well it worked. Bird also shares Hawaiian Larry Bertleman’s preference to ride the design with the fin loose-freely sliding from front-to-back in the fin box.
Stylemaster Jared Mell trims a Robert August shaped single with fluted wings from the early 70s. The “Endless Summer” star’s endlessly classic step-up board comes complete with a heavy glass job, pin lines and no leash plug. No leash, no mercy! Especially on those big Newport Point days.
No Newport-centric quiver of classic boards would be complete without a Russell Surfboard. And Bird tosses one from the late 70s, shaped by streetwear mogul Shawn Stussy, into the bunch. Both rich in beauty and Newport Beach surfing heritage, the Russel Surfboard seems to go just fine in the pocket under Punker Pat Towersy’s feet.

hi! my grandpa is “russell” i just want to say to everyone who rides a russell board, thanks for living out the legacy, truly is just an amazing feeling when i see people riding his boards, grandpa would be beyond happy to know that people still love him still he used to think that nobody would remember him but this is an amazing thing to mention in a video, thank you:)!

My first surfboard was a Russell a 6’4 pintail my dad bought me in 1977. It was really too big for me, but I didn’t know it at the time, I was 12 about 4’11 and weighed about 85 pounds maybe, but I loved that board.
If anybody does a better presented and more knowledgeable narrative on the history and evolution of boards I'd be surprised.. The demonstrations complete this fabulous package and I for one thank the people who took the time to give me this history lesson free of charge here in Australia.. Thanks heaps I love it!!
A good surfing buddy of mine rode for Russell during the hyper active transition time. He'd get something new/different/better about every 2 months and so lots of well made boards became hand me downs for the tribe. Great times!
Well shoots, sometimes ya get a few fleeting seconds of notoriety on YT. The Newport Paipo Shoe shown here I originally purchased several years ago at the amazing Rose Bowl swap meet. It was pretty trashed, but I gave it a good dose of restorative TLC, and soon it was watertight and ready to get back in the lineup. I took it in to the Shed for Bird to check out (owing to his significant history as a kneeman), and he was super stoked! He didn't have one in his collection, so I sold it to him. Pretty wild to see it resurface after I had long forgotten bout it-
So classic watching this, that Dyno Sting was my board sometime in the early 90's. I found it at a yard sale, did some ding repair on it, and kept it for a few years. I was renting a room from my surfboard shaper here in Oside at the time, and he got me into alternative shapes. I loved that airspray, and if I recall, the fin is the same one that was on it back then. Made me smile to see some guys getting some enjoyment out of it.
My pops had a house in Newport on 24th St. for 11 years in the 80s and 90s. I grew up there surfing out in front at Blackies during the winter and 55th st the rest of the time. The fun zone, peer records, Russell surfboards! I only surfed with Russell surfboards from 14 years old into my 30s. Good times!
I haven't thought of peer records in decades! That place was great.

MY first board was a 6'10" robert august that was exactly like the 3rd board. same tail same wide nose. same light blue rail and pinline. I rode that board over my thruster everytime Huntington was over 10ft. and man what a great ride
Bigger Days, Better Days, Newport Point Days ! Some of the best waves of my life were big days with perfect thick square barrels at The Point. Before Surf line etc... and local I recall hearing it. Not a crowd in the sand at the waters edge. A number of huge zoom lens cameras on tripods like Pipeline. California Pipeline it is/was known as with a big south from the right direction YES CAN NOT FORGET SESSIONS!!!
Newport. Late 60's, early 70's. I'm thinking Blue Cheer. Plastic Fantastic. Knee boards dished out. One of the surf movies back then had a kneeboarder in Newport get one of theeeeelooooongest rides I've ever seen. After about a minute, everybody started yelling, "STAND UP !!!!!! lol
this brings back memories of John Van Ornum and Eddie Farwell doing soul arches in the barrel at Santa Ana river jetties when there was a steel pier there...

Dude, that is of the most epic beach break surf I have ever seen. At times, it looks like Pipe. Here and there. I remember that day, it was a renowned day for Surf in Socal.
I had a Chuck Vinson (Santa Cruz) fang tail very similar to the RA that Jared Mel was riding. Riding first peak at the Hook in '76 that board would cut back around on rail like no other board I had every ridden...
One of my first boards as a kid around maybe '71 or '72 was similar to that first board. Designed for kneeboarders but I surfed it stand up..... its huge design flaw like your featured one was the straight set, non angled twin fins. They just don't work! Hence they didn't last long, especially when early twin fin shaper/designers worked out that angling the fins both longitudinally and vertically produced epic results. These are the twin fins that Ben Aipa, Larry Bertleman, Mark Richards and many others ripped on!

Bird, that first board definitely looked like an early Greenough “spoon”. Something your brother Rex would have surfed at Big Rock before the Lis fish!

Those old boards suck, They are fun to goof around on though. I had to learn on one and ride them when I was a kid late 70's early 80's. I am glad surfboards have progressed in design over the years.

First board looks like Greenough's in the Fantasea vid. I had a board in late 70's similar to #2, more swallow than Stingy, great at Nofre. Newport waves were hard to surf as I recall, then I was a kid in the early 70's with a clunky Rick surfboards- Fish I guess it was called, don't know why other than the small turkey fish painted on the deck, it was more like a pintail Egg. cool vid- Bird, thanks
Bright side, they'll ding their heads before the boards! Old Clark foam and glass scheduling...? Who needs scheduling, it floats and it works. I keep my first thruster around and loan it to anyone with one stipulation; if you break it while surfing, I'll pay you $100 on the spot!
I still bring it everywhere because it works and I've never had anyone break it, no matter how hard they stomped on it and ate it. Older boards are still boards and they're just as fun. Mine is a double to single concave fish that grovels like a new board and it's fast with a little leeway over the rest in the paddling department.

Not everyone gets it, but I used to really enjoy sometimes just grabbing some fat old forgotten yellowed board for a few laid back sessions. Instantly forget all the aggro performance hype and also I found it much easier to enjoy crap waves as they just GO.
I remember those were the days that surfboards rarely broke in 2 equal pieces, and it they did break it was usually just the tip of the nose. Now a days surfboard mfg’s tell you that you if you want the same performance of the board you are riding you should replace it every 1.5 to 2 years.

i have ridden old used boards that all look fat or too thick or something. i got my best tube ride on an old board. i did some of my fastest loosest turns on an 8 foot board. it really is dependent on how good you are. but it is worth going to a shop and just picking an old one off the rack for 80 bucks. you will be surprised.

Anyone have any info on " Ocean" surfboard brand? It was my first board, single fin stinger, a lot like the one in this video, I still have it, Bought it brand new for $165 around 1975 I think, can not find anything on the company.

When I think of Newport, Robert August?! Sorry, that's 100% Huntington Beach. When I think of Newport since 1962, names like Steve Walden, Pat Hanafin, Peter Schroff and Lance/Ritchie Collins, Giddings (G-Force), Howard Duck, Blake/Blizkreig, Cordy, Estrats, etc amongst the many real Newport family crew. Frog, TK & Mickey at the Frog House deserve their kudos too. Good vid. History, well... not so accurate. Aloha Mai

You can't showcase them, those boards suck. What they were doing is what you get with those boards. I was unfortunate to have to use them in the late 70's as a kid.

I learned to surf on an old Bing Bonzer from the early 70's. My first short board was actually a knee board. then I moved to a regular old single fin I believe it was around 6"0. Somewhere around 1982 I got my first twin fin that sucker was fast I didn't get a tri fin until 1984. Once the tri fin came around I never looked back.
I am from Newport Beach Shawn was from laguna Beach, I rode tk, boards from the frog house my friends sister was married to Shawn stussy..
