Sets & User Programs Explained, Roland & Bugari V-Accordions, Richard Noel

  • The distinction between sets and user programs is one of the most confusing aspects of playing the Roland and Bugari V-Accordions. In this video I first review the concept of a set, with examples of how you can select different accordion, orchestra, and organ sounds. I then discuss what a user program is in relation to a set. I demonstrate each with a Roland FR-4x v-accordion, but the concepts will be similar for the 1x, 3x, 4x, 8x, and Bugari Evo. The 7x accomplishes the same purpose using linked presets rather than user programs. Visit my website at www.noelaccordion.com for additional information on purchasing my v-accordion programming.

This is a must for any beginner on the 4X. Don't even open your manual until you have seen this video. Couldn't be better!!

I have been searching for the information (definitions for sets, registers, and user program banks) which you just very clearly explained. I also appreciated your comments regarding playing the 4x as a basic accordion, as that is appropriate for my current skill level. Thank you!

Brilliant. I have just bought a FR-1X and was struggling to understand all the settings. This has cleared it all up for me. Thanks very much. Excellent.

Linden Proud Great! There are few who understand sets vs. user programs. The 1x only has 8 user programs but if you have 8 settings that you use a lot, with a variety of orch/organ/accordion sounds, those 8 settings can be a valuable asset.

Hi Richard, I just bought a secondhand Fr.1X.
So would I save a program I want to be saved?
    Thanks.

That was so very clear and helpful. Thank you so much.
One thing I’m never sure about is how to get different drum sounds. I only seem to have the one sound but know that there are more and manual leaves this out. If you have any tips would be grateful.
    Thanks again.

Richard,Many thanks. Your explanation of how to understand sets and user defined sets made this clear in my head. I've been using a 4X for about 18 months and have played with these different sounds but didn't understand how to organize my own user programs

Hi, is it possible to use your configuration on Bugari Evo, as I don't see you explaining about Bugari, even if it's mentioned in the title. Thanks

    • @RichardNoel

If you are asking whether I offer user programs (and sets) for the Bugari Evo, the answer is yes. I have it available on my website. However, if the question is whether the same programs from the other instruments transfer adequately to the Evo, then I will have to say mostly not. Even the "twin" of the Evo, the Roland FR-8x, allows for different expansions, making for potential conflicts. If both the 8x and Evo use just two expansions, and those are the same on both, then the programming of those two models will be largely interchangeable.

    Fantastic and crystal clear. Thanks!
Just a small typo: at minute 7:47, where you choose the sax, you say it is the 6th register on side 2, while in fact you push the 5th register and infact then you say it is the register 12, which is precisely the 5th register of side 2.
