Tilmor's Innovative New Plastic Mulch Layer - Overview

Tilmor plastic layer is a modular design for laying 3' and 4' plastic and up to two rows of standard drip tape. The innovative design incorporates easy to adjust tire and disc tension.
Small growers face unique challenges and often must rely on older equipment that was developed many years ago for mechanized cultivation. This often means farmers are forced to rely on parts that are obsolete, poorly constructed or difficult to find.

Can you adjust the drip tape so that it's laid off to a one side of the plastic, and not set directly over the middle?

Great question as it is not explained directly in the video.
Yes, you can set it off to the side. If you freeze the video at 1:41, you can see the black piece that the drip tape feeds through and the holes on the shaping pan that it can be moved to in order to set it at different points.

Could you use a thicker plastic? Or does it need to be a certain thinness?

Great question! The primary plastic used in this video is 1mil.
We like this as it stretches well over the bed and is thick enough that it does not tear very easily so cleanup at the end of the season is much easier. A thicker plastic can be used without issue as long as the roll size doesn't get so big that it can't fit on the layer implement itself.
We do not recommend getting cheap/thin plastic as you will negate any savings on the plastic with the additional labor required to clean it out of the field at the end of the season!

would a 25hp tractor be able to pull this? I have experience with these with larger horsepower tractors, but I personally own a 25 hp tractor and I'm very interested is purchasing this if my tractor could handle it

Great question! This was designed for smaller hp tractors in mind so it should work great.
A good thing to keep in mind:
Larger ones are designed for one pass shaping and laying of plastic behind the tractor. In order to fit smaller tractors this is typically a two pass system with our layer. While the video shows one pass, it is being used on our 23hp mid mount tractor so we are running the discs in the middle.
On a smaller compact tractor you will typically need to run some discs on the first pass to pull soil in to loosen it up and kind of mound it in the center where the shaper/layer will go over on the next pass. Basically there needs to be enough tilth and soil to create a nice formed bed and this is more important in this situation because you don't have the weight and power of a larger tractor to compensate for less tilthy soil.
As with any plastic layer it can take some getting dialed in, but it can be a great asset for sure. Feel free to contact us with any other questions!

Great question and something that is only briefly mentioned in the video.
Yes, it can be used on a cat 1 hitch either by purchasing a Cat 1 toolbar from us or if you already have a 2" square tube toolbar, then it can bolt up to it.
One thing to keep in mind is that we designed it as a smaller system so that it can work on smaller tractors. This will require you to make a pass prior to the plastic mulch layer with some discs or something to bring soil in towards the center so the bed shaper has soil to work with.
