I’m not really sure. I always just grew up trying to emulate my favorite singers (Merle, Hank Sr, George Jones, Lester Flatt, Ray Charles, etc) and then somehow found my own voice. I’ve never had any lessons or studied anything for it…so I’m not much help there. I’m sorry about that! However, I’d say just sing as much as you can…it’s taken me a long time to realize that a voice is just like an instrument - you have to practice.
Just about everyone has a good tool to improve your playing and singing, it's a smartphone, prop it up on the kitchen table like Trey does and film yourself. It will give an honest appraisal of how you sound and maybe just as important it will focus your mind on making a performance instead of just practicing the song.
