    I'll never forget the scene in Goodfellas where Jimmy is staring at Morris while "Sunshine of Your Love" is playing. Iconic scene.

    Goodfellas is of those movies that never get boring after multiple viewings.

    I feel like people are always going straight to Tarantino when discussing a filmmaker that uses music really well, and to be fair, he's great at it, but Scorsese's films always use music perfectly as well. Maybe people are just too distracted by how amazing everything else about his movies are to notice? xD

    Irishman music was on par with previous movies... remember sitting in theater as the camera panned in the nursing home with Still of The night.. you instantly knew it was a Scorsese movie .. gave me chills

      Psycho Bateman Started off as a film professor in NYC before being scooped up by Roger Corman...arguably one of the most distinguished Corman proteges ever.

    Good point in the beginning about not just using music he likes - the music in his films all fits the tone of his scenes and characters, unlike say Tarantino who, as Ennio Morricone said, uses music without coherence.

    Of all the amazing songs/music used in Mr.Scorsese's work, my favorites are "Be My Baby!", "Baby, I Love You!", and "Shipping Up To Boston". :D

    Excellent as always! Very glad you mentioned the great Bernard Herrmann at the start to distinguish an original dramatic score from the use of existing music (mostly pop or rock songs) to reflect and evoke a certain feel. The right choice is often hard. I have seen (and heard) too many movies where only the song lyrics fit, but not the sound, rhythm and feel. Scorsese definitely is one of the finest, including spot on use of music. As always, thanks for sharing your insight! Looking forward to your upcoming longer videos!

    • @JacksMovieReviews
      @JacksMovieReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very much appreciated. I think the best way to see how good his musical choices are is to compare them to other directors trying to copy his approach. It really feels like night and day.

  • @johnathonhaney8291
    @johnathonhaney8291 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You even see this use of music on Scorsese's first official film, "Boxcar Bertha", which uses 1930s period music to paint the mood of the action and nothing but the sound of the train going away at the end. To this day, it still puts him a cut above most filmmakers. The only other non-Scorcese film I can think of that does this is Shoot 'Em Up, though others will bring up Baby Driver.

    Jumping jack flash to introduce deniro in mean streets is one of my all time favorite scenes, very, very stylish. Which is what I find interesting about Scorsese, he can create a very sort of Catholic-centric Italian style in terms of the clothes, the attitude, general aesthetics, but like a shaman he wills the music he overlays it with, and it fits hand in glove. That music’s attitude fits so well with the characters sort of spiritual energy, that it becomes a lesson in morality, in a song that on its own one would never find that in. Sort of overlays the song within a larger moral context, and suddenly infiltrates into the story itself, as if the stones had devised a song to fit deniro’s character; or Harry Nilsson writing what would be the perfect cocaine filled escape from police helicopters. Paranoia, etc. Scorsese fascinates me, with his cinematography and use of Catholicism throughout, but the music is such a wonderful addition to everything. Have the criterion collection edition of the last temptation of Christ, gotta finally watch it this weekend, one of the few Scorsese films I have not seen. Criterion just through on ‘After Hours’ as well onto their streaming service, very slept on Scorsese picture.

    He is a genius the way he uses music born in 85 and I cant even keep track of all the songs that I've heard from his music picks. Give me shelter is always a good 1 but the 1 I really like was john Lennon well well well in departed...all of shutter island was great picks i cant even go on cause every movie is a+ music

    That would probably top the best high ever.

    I bet it would be a lot of blues. In the irishman, because you follow a hard, cold hearted irish war veteran in 1950's. Maybe a little bit of 50's doo wop, maybe some Andrew Sisters too because, the story will probably start in the 40's.

    I have mixed feelings about Scorsese’s music ever since I saw Casino for the first time last year. The music was so constant and loud it was distracting. But maybe that was the point - that film is all about overdoing everything.

    Great video, as per usual. I also like how in Silence, the lack of music is meant to show the absence of God’s help for our protagonist. Like you said with Gangs of New York, maybe not super subtle, but it’s effective nonetheless, in my eyes.

    • @JacksMovieReviews

    I just watched casino last night, and then this popped up on TH-cam after I finished watching the movie. So is my phone listening to me? stuff like this has happened before with news article alerts about things I’m talking about in that moment. Anyway, I wanted to say that as much as the music is appropriate in casino, I thought it was over used. I know it has meaning but there was just so much music in the movie. I usually love when films do this but I think there has to be a balance. Like in Tarantino movies, he plays music but they’re spread out and feels more balanced. Goodfellas has the perfect balance. At least it made the quite moments feel really quite
