    We deal with northern pike while crappie and yellow perch fishing up here in Michigan. There is gar but I haven’t caught one in a couple years. Like your small cooler minnow set-up. Would be good ice fishing to keep them from freezing. We use wigglers ( mayfly nymphs) and wax worms to tip baits a lot instead of minnows. Are these baits available down in your area? Also in summer leech’s are a popular bait here

    • @FishYanker
      @FishYanker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Wiggler's and wax worms are available. Do you catch crappie up there with wax worms? If so I might give that a try. Northern pike would be fun and I caught a couple walleye a few years back they are delicious. I would like to find me a good place to catch some walleyes around here. Walleye that I caught were in the little red river where I like to trout fish 46° water temps all year. I guess that is why there are walleye in that River.

    I see youve added some electronics.
    I have been using Humminbird Helix 5 with down imaging but no side scan on my 14’ Alweld Jon boat.
    Since its a small boat i felt this would be the best unit.
    But watching videos im hearing about how important it is to have side scan.
    Yesterday i went to a local Bass Pro shop and talked about a new unit with side scan.
    The salesman is also a local guy who knows the places i fish very well.
    He tole me he has 2 units on his bass boat, both having side scan.
    But due to the water depth in the areas i fish, buying a new unit with side scan would be a waste of my money.
    Needles to say i was somewhat surprised to hear that.
    But fact is that there isnt many places with water deeper than 10 feet and mostly less in the areas i fish.
    Also he said they wont work for shooting back under the surface weeds beds i fish.
    So how are you finding the side imaging working for you?
    As for rod holders, when i bought my boat i took it to a welder and had a 2” wide flat piece of aluminum welded full length of the boat on the inside of the gunnel. I then drilled 5/8” holes in that 8” apart. so i can install standard Driftmaster rod holders where ever i want and as many as i want on both sides.
    See, if you had more rod holders you wouldnt have lost that pole. lol
    But guess what, make sure you dont leave them in the holders while your running from place to place in rough water either.
    I wont bother saying why.
    I once his a stump so hard the cowling on the motor flew off and i never found it.
    $300 for a used one for a 90 Yamaha.

    • @FishYanker
      @FishYanker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like side imaging so far Ernie. As far as looking for fish it's kind of hard they're like a small grain of rice but if you look for the black spots which which are the fishes shadow you can tell but I love the fact that shows me where the logs and debris are. I'll be fishing closer to the middle of the lake and see a log or brush top and that gives me a good opportunity to crappie fish that area. I actually use mine in about 5 to 10 ft of water most of the time. It does pretty good but I understand once you get in about 5 ft or less things just don't look right. I can see fish under my transducer with my sonar and down imaging under 5 ft but I'm so close them the boat kinda scares the fish off most of the time. So I'm basically look for structure and if I catch a glimpse of some fish in the area I just fish the same depth as the fish are handing out. My only regret with my hummingbird helix 7 is I wish I would have bought a bigger unit so it would be easier to see.
