    • @MikeFromKorea

Yeah, a number of nightlife businesses took a bad hit and shut down. Even so, I still see the nightlife today as lively and vibrant. I can recall a time when the city was mostly dead after midnight because all the bars and clubs and such had to shut down between midnight and 4:00 am. Some places would close and kick everyone out, others would just shut the doors and keep everyone inside until 4:00, or let people come and go through the back doors. But the exterior lights would be off, the shutters would be down, and the sidewalks in most neighborhoods would be empty.

There's something magical about early mornings this time of year. I've been slipping out of bed at 3:30 a.m., pulling on my running gear, and heading out into the pre-dawn stillness. The air is crisp and cool, the streets are deserted, and it feels like I have the whole world to myself. As I run, the quiet beauty of the waking day washes over me, dissolving the anxieties I carried from the day before. With each step, a sense of peace settles in, and the world feels vibrant and alive. I love Seoul!

Your content is really interesting Mike. It's crazy how you have lived in South Korea for over 3 decades. In what use to be a just a small, undeveloped East Asian nation, it has become a global cultural juggernaut across film, TV, food, consumer brands and of course music. It must be fascinating to observe because as an American, 'American culture' was always 'there' and everywhere around the world, but to see things out of South Korea emerge and permeate across the world like that must be fascinating.
Keep it up! And best wishes from Australia matey!

Thank you! In the early days of the internet, anytime I mentioned that I live in Korea, people would often respond with, "North Korea?" It's been fascinating seeing how awareness of Korean culture has grown from the early days of the Korean wave spreading through Asia, then on to the rest of the world. I've seen that K-Pop fans have their own global vocabulary now. All the travel vloggers coming to Korea have their bucket lists of places to see and food to eat, and some of them are so immersed in the culture before they arrive that I've learned things from their videos. It's wild.

Very cool walk! There is a very different vibe during the wee hours seeing and feeling what is easily missed during the day. I’m originally from Philadelphia and so in tune with the heartbeat of the city and treated that with respect listening and understanding how to walk during times not so populated. I’ve lived in the Rochester NY area over half my life now and have never gotten the heartbeat. Your love for Korea shows, you’re in tune with the heartbeat.

I envy you, I moved to Seoul in 1997 and left in 2002 and wished I would have stayed, over 20 years have gone by and I still miss Korea every day. I married a Korean woman there and she wanted to be in the states, we’ve since divorced and I’ve met another woman who I have a family with and she isn’t on board literally and figuratively on moving to another country.

My life here could have gone very differently. There have been many opportunities for it all to go wrong. That it's been okay so far comes down more to the generosity of others and to sheer luck than anything else. And who can say what the future holds? I've known plenty of people for whom it didn't work out. So when you're missing Korea and looking back on your decision to leave, don't discount the possibility that things could have ended up in a much worse situation!

    It would be really cool~~

I lived in VA, Northern and Southern California, Hawaii and Korea; I visited many countries in Europe and also traveled to numerous states in the USA. From a standpoint of pickpocketing, robbery, assault and stealing, Korea is definitely the safest country to live in. Of course, Korea has its own bad points such as bad air and humid summer and sometimes being crowded. For me, Korea is the safest and most convenient when it comes to daily living. I loved the fact that I didn't have to own a car to live in Korea. Also, service is very fast in Korea. There is no tip but almost always I tipped people because I wanted to. Here, in the US, I end up tipping often even though I don't want to. I would say one person can live very well in Korea on $4,000 per month. Here in Southern CA, no way.

It is so dark and every area has its share of random crazies who could just come out and attack. It isn't likely, but still... Meanwhile here in Korea we walk our dogs anytime anywhere and never feel threatened. Well lit and people just mind their own business.

Thanks for the info! I was planning a trip to Korea and I'd be traveling alone. I was thinking of staying in Sincheon area, is it a good idea? Since the time difference from my country is 8 hrs, I'd probably be out alone at night at first.

Do you mean Sincheon-dong in Songpa-gu or Sinchon-dong in Mapo-gu, where Yeonsei University is located? Either would be fine, but you'll likely see a lot more intoxicated young people around Sinchon. In my experience, the most dangerous places in Seoul are those where lots of people are drinking, particularly in the hours just before and just after midnight. And particularly when the victim is female. That kind of crime is underreported. That said, it's rare enough that my wife and her relatives rarely worry about any of the younger women in the family. They've all participated quite heavily in the nightlife.

@@sophiaweber4334 The area around Sincheon, Songpa-gu is mostly apartment areas, and includes Jamsil Lotte Tower and Seokchon Lake. You can rest assured that this is a great area for a walk at night. I’m korean
