It was 30 years ago, in the 1990s, and at that time, S.Korea had already achieved the fastest growth in the world for 30 years and was about to enter the top 20 OECD countries. At that time, Korea already had the same social system and transportation infrastructure as today, all companies were making great strides and recording almost perfect employment rates, and people were full of energy, dreaming of a better future than now.

Walking around at 3.00 pm is not safe enough living in London. Attacked by a stranger once on a busy road and in broad daylight. I miss living in Seoul.
Sorry to hear that. I know a couple of people who have had some unfortunate experiences in London, as well. When I'm there, I try to take precautions that I don't here in Seoul.

I envy you, I moved to Seoul in 1997 and left in 2002 and wished I would have stayed, over 20 years have gone by and I still miss Korea every day. I married a Korean woman there and she wanted to be in the states, we’ve since divorced and I’ve met another woman who I have a family with and she isn’t on board literally and figuratively on moving to another country.
My life here could have gone very differently. There have been many opportunities for it all to go wrong. That it's been okay so far comes down more to the generosity of others and to sheer luck than anything else. And who can say what the future holds? I've known plenty of people for whom it didn't work out. So when you're missing Korea and looking back on your decision to leave, don't discount the possibility that things could have ended up in a much worse situation!
It would be really cool~~
I used to live in Hannam-dong and sometimes walked to the Han River park after midnight. I loved seeing the city lights from that perspective. I'll take the camera down there one day.
8:50 The yellow painted zebra crossings and yellow traffic light posts means it's a "school zone" Legal traffic speed is much slower and the penalty in an accident is higher. Just some additional information.
I'm 50 years old, I've never worried in my life in Seoul at night walking. Because 112 police call comes in 5 minutes to your place and can trace other criminals run traces any sides.
I lived in VA, Northern and Southern California, Hawaii and Korea; I visited many countries in Europe and also traveled to numerous states in the USA. From a standpoint of pickpocketing, robbery, assault and stealing, Korea is definitely the safest country to live in. Of course, Korea has its own bad points such as bad air and humid summer and sometimes being crowded. For me, Korea is the safest and most convenient when it comes to daily living. I loved the fact that I didn't have to own a car to live in Korea. Also, service is very fast in Korea. There is no tip but almost always I tipped people because I wanted to. Here, in the US, I end up tipping often even though I don't want to. I would say one person can live very well in Korea on $4,000 per month. Here in Southern CA, no way.
Who has an idea that exploring empty and lonely Seoul in a midnight? I have been watched only busy and noisy street in the day time. Thanks for showing the other part of my capital streets of Korea at night. Always be happy and safe😊
I remember walking home at that time more than a little tipsy and never having to worry about my safety. And I agree with you I think Seoul has only gotten safer. Great video and loved the little montage at the end.
I walked around 3:00 am in the morning. I live in Riverside California about 45 minutes away from Disneyland. I feel very safe serenaded neighborhood and clean air. My backyard have breathtaking views absolutely beautiful.
LOL, With a crime rate of 39 per one thousand residents, ''Riverside has one of the highest crime rates in America''-- compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 25.
I am sure that the possiblity you might be involved in any trouble after mid-night in Korea should be less than 0.001 %. Korea is the safest country in the world.
Absolutely right. My wife and I visited Tampa, Florida and we felt nervous walking our dogs in the dark after 9 or 10pm. It is so dark and every area has its share of random crazies who could just come out and attack. It isn't likely, but still... Meanwhile here in Korea we walk our dogs anytime anywhere and never feel threatened. Well lit and people just mind their own business.
In 1994, when I was a 12-year-old girl, I went out to eat Ramyeon at 12 a.m. at Family Mart with my friend in Gangnam while her parents and my parents were sleeping at home.
It makes such a difference to be able to do that, doesn't it? It took my mother a long time to understand that I'm safer here in daily life than I ever would be back home. She was worried about me for years.

Happy 1st anniversary of your channel. I was born and raised in the countryside. When I was a kid 40 years ago, the sound that opened the dawn was the sound of a farmer walking along the dawn road with his oxen pulled by an ox to the field. 😄 The most dangerous thing I see on the street you are walking on is a few ginkgo nuts that have fallen to the ground and are not being picked up. 😅🤣

Back then.. it was much safer and nicer... nice people and good memories... 👍 used to go to walmart and Krogers after 10pm without any hesitancy.. missing those days...
Congratulations on your first anniversary. A nice walk. :) A week later now and you must be so careful with all of the snow, don´t damage your foot this time. All the best and stay safe.
Thanks for the info! I was planning a trip to Korea and I'd be traveling alone. I was thinking of staying in Sincheon area, is it a good idea? Since the time difference from my country is 8 hrs, I'd probably be out alone at night at first.
Do you mean Sincheon-dong in Songpa-gu or Sinchon-dong in Mapo-gu, where Yeonsei University is located? Either would be fine, but you'll likely see a lot more intoxicated young people around Sinchon. In my experience, the most dangerous places in Seoul are those where lots of people are drinking, particularly in the hours just before and just after midnight. And particularly when the victim is female. That kind of crime is underreported. That said, it's rare enough that my wife and her relatives rarely worry about any of the younger women in the family. They've all participated quite heavily in the nightlife.
@@sophiaweber4334 The area around Sincheon, Songpa-gu is mostly apartment areas, and includes Jamsil Lotte Tower and Seokchon Lake. You can rest assured that this is a great area for a walk at night. I’m korean

I used to be on Periscope and followed a young lad from Scotland who often took midnight strolls in towns of Scotland. It’s amazing what we saw that are easily missed during waking hours. Thank you!❤
Thank you! That's a great way to describe it, being in tune with the city's heartbeat. I just can't imagine living anywhere else.
Always thank you so much for your honest and warm videos. I respect and appreciate your integrity.
Thank you very much!

When I was a teenager 40 years ago, I used to enjoy riding my bike to other neighborhoods in the middle of the night. I loved the quiet, deserted streets and the dreary air of dawn.
I always enjoyed the night more than the day in my 20s for the same reason. Cold winter nights were always my favorite.
Viewing from Texas. Thank you for wonderful Korea video
I'm happy you enjoyed it!
Mike, thanks to you , I really enjoyed looking middle of night view of city. And I envied you for taking a walk alone in quiet street.

Very cool idea for a video. Congrats on 1 year 🥳

Yeah, marrige sucks.
It would be really cool~~
I used to live in Hannam-dong and sometimes walked to the Han River park after midnight. I loved seeing the city lights from that perspective. I'll take the camera down there one day.
I miss Korea man
Congratulations Mike!

8:50 The yellow painted zebra crossings and yellow traffic light posts means it's a "school zone"
Legal traffic speed is much slower and the penalty in an accident is higher.
Just some additional information.
I'm 50 years old, I've never worried in my life in Seoul at night walking. Because 112 police call comes in 5 minutes to your place and can trace other criminals run traces any sides.
I think we're very lucky!

LOL, With a crime rate of 39 per one thousand residents,
''Riverside has one of the highest crime rates in America''-- compared to all communities of all sizes -
from the smallest towns to the very largest cities.
One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 25.
Gosh, I loved it so much. Walking along Cheongyes-chun (stream) at night with a nice music was so exhilerating.

That luxury bag store with large windows.... that would have been broken into and cleaned out in minutes in most other countries.
In the U.S. for sure.

Happy 1st anniversary of your channel. I was born and raised in the countryside. When I was a kid 40 years ago, the sound that opened the dawn was the sound of a farmer walking along the dawn road with his oxen pulled by an ox to the field. 😄
The most dangerous thing I see on the street you are walking on is a few ginkgo nuts that have fallen to the ground and are not being picked up. 😅🤣

@MikeFromKorea Sorry, rookie mistake! Sincheon station, line 2 is all I know for now.
