The purpose of the scene is to intercede on our behalf to our Lord Jesus Christ. Mary is the greatest intercessor because she has the title of the Queen of heaven and of earth.
At the cross at the foot of the cross Jesus had said to Saint John, the apostle whom he loved, behold the mother, and in that moment he had given the blessed virgin Mary as the mother of mankind that whosoever would consecrate themselves and entirely to her care, I would never be led astray.
