My thinking is that evolutionarily, protection was more important than being treated well. If you are with someone who will protect you but treats you like crap, that is better from a survival and reproductive perspective than someone who treats you well but can't protect you. Genetics doesn't care if you are happy and treated well, it only cares if you survive and reproduce.
Consciously women want to be treated well, but subconsciously they are driven to seek out protection. It's been stated that some high percentage of our choices are driven subconsciously (I don't remember the number) and very little is driven consciously. So while women may say the conscious thing, they're more often going to do the subconscious thing. So they keep doing the subconscious thing and they can't figure out why they can't get the conscious thing they consciously want.
So to the point about dissonance, it is only when a women reconciles the dissonance between the conscious and subconscious from her behavioral perspective, can she stop getting treated like crap and get someone who will treat her well. And that never comes up front but only after years of being treated like crap and the psychological damage that causes.

When I was in college, the few bad boys on my dorm floor had so many women coming to their rooms, it was like they needed one of those number machines, like they have in the supermarket. I was jealous, until I looked closer at the ladies, who were 19-23, and looked like they were in their later 30's Then I understood. And I realized that dealing with low grade women would only lower my energy. And I felt great. And then women started coming on to me- and I would reject them, always courteously of course.
