    Great suggestions Gary! I've recently returned to modelling after a long period of time and my first model was an Airfix 1:72 Bristol Beaufighter TF:X and I've recently purchased a Royal Navy and an RAF Harrier both Airfix 1:72 scale which I'm thoroughly enjoying

    Always remember, it's your model, so you finish it in whatever colour or trim that suits you. There's no need to be dictated to by authenticity or historical accuracy.
    An old toothbrush is very useful to clean sanding sticks. They will last much longer.

    Your airfix kits look stunning! Please continue to produce videos of them, as i have gotten back into the hobby after 30 years. I love those new airfix kits, they are so much fun. And i have the RAF decals for the 109, of course :)

    Great video. I think it's all too easy to buy stuff you'll never use unless you get some good advice. I see you use Revell Contacta cement which is good. I also use Tamiya Extra Thin which is applied with a brush; that's proved to be quite effective as it's drawn into seams via capillary action. I get my brushes from an art supplies shop which can be a bit more reasonable than a model shop I found Royal and Langnickel Gold Taklon brushes to be quite good value. You can buy a set with different sizes and shapes; the larger flat brushes are good if you don't own an airbrush but want to achieve a nice finish over a large area.

      Excellent advice Tom! I’ve been thinking of that extra thin cement, sounds ideal for many situations.

    • @simongee8928

      @@garys_stuff Tamiya extra thin quick setting is also very useful for certain applications. I use four types of 'glue' and use whichever suits the the particular situation.

    Thank you so much for this informative Video. Have always been interested in the idea, of Model Making but unfortunately life hasn't been kind. And I never had the time, and patience when I was younger to have a go at it.
    My Father was in the RAF, have fond memories of him putting together Model Aircraft, and painting them so I could hang them in my bedroom. Recently I had been speaking to my Father alot about Aircraft, his RAF life and Model Making.
    He bought me my First kit, and a basic 25 piece tool kit. Before I get to work on the kit, I want to make sure I have everything I need. And to gather as much knowledge and information as possible to enjoy it as a New Hobby, Your Video in particular has helped me alot. Happy I found Your channel, have watched a couple of Your Video's to get an idea.
    Shall be watching more of Your Video's to further learn. Great work thanks again. Hope you have a Wonderful Christmas & New Year!

      Hope you have fun building your kits. Remember, it's all about what you want to do, not what other people tell you is the 'right' or 'wrong' way. Long as you are happy with a build, that's all that counts! Do keep talking-to your Dad as well, this kind of spoken history is invaluable. I've spent many a happy hour hearing tales from my own Dad of life in the FleetAir Arm!

      @@garys_stuff Thank you for your kind words. I shall take everything you have said into account. I'm very much looking forward to starting my first kit, in the next few days.
      I would like to create a workspace, currently have a corner desk for my computer. It would be great to turn it into a workspace, but I have one issue I have music equipment to shuffle around. So for the time being I will have to make a temporary workspace.
      Out of curiousity what Brushes would you recommend? I currently only have 2 which are supplied with my first kit. Could you recommend what type of affordable brushes I can use for large surface area's, and for fine details?
      And lastly what paints would you suggest? I would like to work my way up with detailing and weathering etc, but for now I will stick to the basics and practice as much as I can.
      Thank you, I regularly speak with my Dad about his experiences in the RAF, very invaluable indeed. Recently have learned alot from him about my Great-grandfather and my Great-grandfathers brothers history too.
      It's certainly influenced my hunger for the historical value of information shared, very proud of them all. Have very fond memories growing up miss the Airshows and such, prior to the pandemic I had was enjoying hunting for military history and documenting what I could with photo's.
      Mostly Pillboxes, Gun Battery's, Anti-tank traps, Spigot Mortar Emplacement's, ROC Posts and Abandoned Airbases. Which as you can imagine has sparked even further interest.
      I'm happy to hear you spoke to your Dad often certainly moments to cherish. Wish I had more time with my Great-grandfather, unfortunately I never got to speak with him as I was far to young to understand.
      He sadly passed away when I was the age of 7, found out from my Dad recently, he was an RAMC Medic Survivor. Part of the Normandy Invasion, Gold Beach 50th Division. Have yet to go through his Journal with my Dad, unfortunately the pandemic has made that rather difficult. Then my Dad later also shared my Great-grandfathers Brother also was an apprentice/colleague of Frank Whittle. Couldn't believe it when he told me, Model making will certainly feed that hunger for learning more history. It's great to see that Airfix support's Help for Hero's, gives me even more reason to appreciate model making.
      PS. Sorry to drone on thank you for you reply, really do look forward to getting started with my first kit. Thank you again for your highly informative video's. Look forward to watching more.

    Great video! I saw yesterday that Amazon (and probably others) do a set of 20 drill bits or mini drills for about £7 upwards. Re sanding sticks, how about covering a quarter (each end) and leave the middle free? Always use the same end and when it clogs up just use the other end :) Seatbelts.. paint the masking tape /before/ you cut it into strips, say a light brown or grey?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the masking tape takes paint OK! Some of the tape I've used has been really shiny and doesn't like acrylics. Frog Tape is great.

    I would like to know what advice you have on cutting fragile pieces off like ariels without breaking them.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use a pair of good, small nippers, and don't cut right up to the piece if possible. You can always trim it down. Or use a very sharp craft knife and use gentle, repeated strokes of the blade to cut through slowly.

    I'm just getting back into this after 30+years! Can you recommend a cheap(ish) airbrush set? I don't mind if it's one of the 'always on' compressor types.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a Timbertech one that comes with a large compressor. Never got on with those little ones they market for nail salons, etc. I got it on Amazon, its currently £77. There are a lot of these cheaper air brushes about and they all seem to be essentially the same, but mine has worked better than the ones I have had previously. If you are new to airbrushing, I'd also suggest looking at a few TH-cam vids as the tips can really help get good results.
