I was also watching this as a kid in the 80s in southern California, USA, renting it from the shop on VHS tape...maybe it was ALSO on TV... I don't remember now... remembering it & looking for it & found it here on TH-cam... wow, the memories!! Fun to watch it again & now I see & remember the parts of the film, towards the end, that were creepy, like the gingerbread children... knowing those were "real" kids... always creeped me out... but STILL so fun & nostalgic to re-watch.
I heard a lot about "Faerie Tale Theatre" from my mom. Back in 1987, my mother was a big fan of the show. Since she was a loyal fan of this series, I decided to watch all the available episodes with her.
Shelley deserves a lot of credit for bringing these tales to TV many years ago. Shs haa fallen on unfortunate days (as evinced by the shameful Dr Phil video) May life turn around and become better for her

It is Savannah from Savannah Smiles!!! Boy I miss the 80s! I loved these when I was a kid. It was so cool to rent these! And Savannah Smiles as well as Disney s The Watcher in the Woods was awesome and scary too!
This was the first episode of Faerie Tale Theatre I ever saw, and it was definitely a good way to start. It's one of the more faithful adaptations the show has done, and it's very moving. It has excellent set designs and a cast in top form. Joan Collins is excellent in her dual role of two very deplorable women. Well done!
I can't avoid re-watching any episode of this. I love how it's made and Shelley Duvall's voice. Aladin Jack and Beanstalk Renzel and Grettel Rumpelstiltskin Rapunzel These are the best for me, but the others worth watching a lot too.
I cant believe the director of the shining thought shelly was a bad choice for her role, I thought she was a strong actor in it and her performance was on parr with everyone else's. She did great and added a real innocence to it I think only she could bring. Her type of demeaner was much needed for the dynamics.

Thank you for providing my childhood favorite shows! I used to rent these every weekend from Blockbuster when I was like 6! They don’t make them like this anymore! FTT still gives me goosebumps. The level of imagination and creativity and pure acting skill from this collection can’t be compared to anything these days! The star studded cast and Directors is stunning! I was never a big fan of Joan Collins, but she is excellent as the Witch here. She really digs into the role but never makes fun of it or breaks the fourth wall. Marvelous.

Watching this decades after childhood...Gretel is frickin adorable... and the whole 2nd half of this video when they get to the witch's house is just as creepy as when I watched it as a kid in the mid 80s... the dead gingerbread children in the background...those images were always the creepiest part.
This rendition is like a cross between the original version by the Brothers Grimm and the opera version by Humperdinck; it’s the fence of gingerbread children at the witch’s cottage that’s a reference to the opera version. That plus the “Evening Prayer” from the opera, heard as this begins and the nasty stepmother is ordering her “lazy, ne’er do well stepkids” out of the house.
Shelly Dualle is a fantatasic actor and brilliant producer. So underestimated. For her talents. Only Shelley couldve played Wendy Torrance! SHE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE ACTORS EVER!
Movie Trivia: The little girl playing the part of Gretel is named Bridgette Andersen. She also played in a sweet movie called "Savannah Smiles" Sadly, the young lady died of a heroin overdose. Couldnt hardly believe it! Savannah Smiles was one of my favorite movies growing up in early 80's. Such a tragedy😔

43:45-“I don’t care if you DO lose your temper! You’re a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE PERSON!” Way to go, Gretel! Not to mention the fact that the stepmother was on the exact same wavelength as the witch! In fact, according to online research on the fairy tale, when Gretel shoves the witch into the oven is supposedly when the stepmother dies; they are even supposedly one and the same! That would certainly make sense, considering Joan Collins played both characters. Kind of like in the Wizard of Oz, how several cast members there also played dual roles as everyone knows, in the Kansas part and the Oz part(for example, Margaret Hamilton was both Miss Gulch and the infamous Wicked Witch of the West of course.)
Please don't put too much credence in 'online research'. The original folk tale, given to the Grimm Brothers by the elderly Dorothea Viehmann in the early XIXth century, is straightforward to a fault, and there is no hint therein that stepmother and witch are the same person. That is a post-Freudian conceit dreamed up by eager psych majors desperate to find a new angle on the story.
Oh, yes! I REJOICED!!! Much the way Dorothy, her friends, AND the Winged Monkeys and all all rejoiced when Dorothy threw the bucket of cold water on the Wicked Witch of the West and she melted!!!

In fact, according to online research on the fairy tale, when Gretel shoves the witch into the oven is supposedly when the stepmother dies; they are even supposedly one and the same! That would certainly make sense, considering Joan Collins played both characters. Kind of like in the Wizard of Oz, how several cast members there also played dual roles as everyone knows, in the Kansas part and the Oz part(for example, Margaret Hamilton was both Miss Gulch and the infamous Wicked Witch of the West of course.)

Please don't put too much credence in 'online research'. The original folk tale, given to the Grimm Brothers by the elderly Dorothea Viehmann in the early XIXth century, is straightforward to a fault, and there is no hint therein that stepmother and witch are the same person. That is a post-Freudian conceit dreamed up by eager psych majors desperate to find a new angle on the story.
Oh, yes! I REJOICED!!! Much the way Dorothy, her friends, AND the Winged Monkeys and all all rejoiced when Dorothy threw the bucket of cold water on the Wicked Witch of the West and she melted!!!
