Rig Rundown - The Kills' Jamie Hince & Alison Mosshart

Guitarist Jamie Hince, one half of the Kills, details the gear he and foil Alison Mosshart are touring with for their upcoming album, Ash & Ice. Hince changed his rig a bit since the last album (more amps and Bigsbys on everything), both for practical reasons-a hand injury which affected his playing style-and also because he was going for a cleaner tone.
Hince has a large collection of Hofner 176 and Galaxie guitars, but this sunburst 176 is his No. 1. He swapped out the stock pickups and put in three single-coil “sharkfin” or “blade” pickups from a similar Galaxie model. “They’re just the greatest pickups I’ve ever heard,” says Hince. “I like a really clear, clean sound that’s just loud-kind of distorting because it’s so loud.” Hince now puts Bigsbys on all of his guitars to help with hand dexterity after an accident impaired the middle finger of his fretting hand. Hince uses the bridge and neck pickups mostly, as well as the Treble-O-Bass, which is a tremolo bass knob for overall tone and adding low end. He keeps several Hofner 176 axes on hand in different tunings, including standard, drop D, and C#.
Hince’s Gretsch Silver Duke is dated 1966, the only year of production for this model. About 100 of these guitars were made. It has TV Jones Duo-Tron pickups and Hince believes this model was heavily influenced by Grestch’s Corvette model released in 1961 out of Brooklyn. “I like my guitars beaten up like this,” he adds.

This interview was a dream come true for me. Jamie is my all time favorite guitarist. Completely my guitar hero, and here he is going in depth about the odds and ends of his sound. I love how genuine he is about it all, and how he still carries that much joy for the sounds/gear after a full career. That joy is why musicians do what they do. Having that instrument that's so good that you just have to tell someone about it.

+Premier Guitar *please* tell your interviewers not to ever skip over guitars! i hate seeing guitars in the background or next to them on stage, and having the interviewer never ask about them. other than that, premier guitar rocks, and is by far the best guitar magazine/youtube channel.

+Calvin Lee We typically only ask them to talk about the main ones, for time concerns (show/venue). We'd love to talk about all the guitars, but if time becomes scarce, we skip over backups. Sorry!

For those interrested in Galaxie/176 name dillema.
That guitar is model 176. Both of them in this video. Hofner was exporting for Selmer company to England. They wanted names to models, not numbers. Also they weren’t fans of that treble O bass switch. So Galaxie was born. They are called like that only in UK rest of Europe had 176s but since Galaxie is so cool name lot of people know it, it’s easier than 176...
Galaxies don’t have treble O bass and have stamped serial numbers. 176 all have TOB switch and don’t have serial numbers. Pickups don’t mater, but Galaxies were discontiued sooner than 176 so most of them have Staple pickups. When Galaxies ended I don’t know someone maybe can let me know. 176 were made till end of 70s. Cheers.

It's exciting to see Jamie's enthusiasm over his gear. A lot of artists seem a little exhausted or more mellow. Every once in a while, an artist will have an explosive excitement to talk about their gear, which is really cool to see.

Seeing Jamie live its definitely surprising how full he makes his band sound. Its cool knowing that he achieves a lot of his sound through multiple amps and not pedals. You can hear him doing his little reverb/amp trick on No Wow live.

I am so glad to have come across this interview. Jamie is a genius when it comes to tone and dynamics so learning about the shark pick ups and all his enthusiasm about his vintage guitar collection and other gear was a delight. I’d say he is one of the greatest and most unique guitarists of today and very underrated. I really hope The Kills continue to make great music 🤘🏻

Big ups to her for bringing out Jamie's immense childlike charm in this interview.
It was a real rope-a-dope and never smooth, but damn she hung in and got so much out of him.
And man, the sheer amount of age and dust and tape on display here just makes me love The Kills even more.

Playing through lots of amps at once was not so uncommon at one time. I'm surprised a bit that more players don't do more blending of amps. Hendrix immediately comes to mind. They used to just have a wall of combos behind them before the Marshall stack took over.
So cool to see him just play around with all his toys and explore the tonal possibilities. Cabinets/speakers are definitely the most under-rated part of any rig. They make a lot of the tone themselves.

this host is really impressive. jamie is totally geeking out and you can tell he's slinging out information that many people just aren't going to pick up on (me included). but she is very good at redirection, and also asking questions which bring out that information. she strikes a nice balance between being a fan and being a host, which is part of what makes this video so interesting.

Indist1nct I don't know what you're watching but it must not be this. She's awful, she talks when she shouldn't talking over him and doesn't when she should leaving awkward pauses when she should be asking questions. Also she speaks to softly and unclear she seems very nervous and uninformed about everything going on and has no enthusiasm compared to Jamie. He totally hella rocks tho

Was lucky enough to find a pair of those 513 blade pickups recently and put them on a Strat. Can totally see why Jamie is so obsessed with them. And yes... they are louder than everything else - even hot humbuckers, but also very little 60 cycle hum and very clean and full sounding.
Another important thing with the Hofners with staple pickups like the cream one would have had is the position-specific tone cap values. Very different to Fender values - particularly on the neck pickup. Wonder if Jamie also changed the tone caps on the cream one to the same .033mf for all positions like on the 70s one when he put the "blades" on it.

Only because of this Video i bought this Höfner Blade Pickup on the second market and put it in my Fender Tele. After a few modifications it fits in the body. The Blade Pickup really sounds Killer. But there is a big problem about it. The Blade Pickups have a notch, where the b-string is placed and course of that the b-string sounds remarkable quiter. That sucks. Is there an expert to tell me why this PUs got that notch and how to fix that problem. A wound g-string is my first idea.
