      The shuttle stack is seismically isolated from the earth using technology also common in large buildings. NASA still has a lot of say in how the shuttles are preserved and has very strict requirements. My understanding is that the California science center went above and beyond those requirements went ensuring the preservation of the stack.

    Being an architect/engineer at heart, I have to ask the question - how long can the shuttle full stack structure last? All materials fatigue when under stress, so what happens in 20-30 years when stress cracks begin forming in the external fuel tank and SRB's? Are they going to tear down the building in order to unstack it?

    • @goldgamercommenting2990
      @goldgamercommenting2990 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      As long as there something holding the structure up. The boosters are attached to the ground and the tank and orbiter might be held up by something… like either wires or something, like shuttle Atlantis.
      So it would last until it needs to be maintained again
      The rockets in Huntsville Alabama were there for a very long time and they are dealing with the pain a lot better than actual aircrafts with metal fatigue
      But when the shuttle exhibit is finished, the stack will be no longer exposed to the elements and as maintaining the stack, it would be a while to eliminate the material fatigue but it will be worth it, just like what NASA did to Atlantis.

      @@russellh8702 well sure, as they should be. But inspections don't provide remediation. What, if anything, has been considered if such inspections down the road determine that the stack is no longer viable? Will they have to demolish the building around it in order to de-stack the orbiter? Let's hope that this has already been considered as a possible outcome, and mitigation can be accomplished with less drastic methods 😊

    • @meldroc
      @meldroc 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The Shuttle, tank, and boosters were designed to stay in place while the shuttle's main engines were fired up over a few seconds, just before the explosive bolts fire, the SRBs ignite and they lift off. That indicates that the core structure holding the Shuttle stack together is going to be pretty strong.

    It would be better if they keep it in it's current position as you can walk around the whole thing (including underneath it), which is incredibly impressive. They should have spent the money making it so you could see or sit in the cockpit. Maybe charge people extra to sit in there. They could have always made a cheap replica for the outside exhibit.

      Go into the museum. You go into the room its in and you see a shuttle that is in its launch position that totals 150 feet. humans are barely 6 feet at most. Its inspiration to see something so large standing upright ready to launch.

      As iconic as the shuttle program was, it was a terribly overpriced and dangerous design. There were many oversights such as
      1) No launch escape system for the crew
      2) Solid rocket boosters don't allow engine shutoff
      3) $2 Billion launch cost vs. Starships' $185 Million
