    I bought the Osmo Mobile and one of the key reasons was for motion time-lapses. Only issue is DJI Go has all your camera settings to auto which gives flicker in your time lapse as the white balance and ISO change. FilMicPro does not support motions time lapse as I found out after buying it :( Really hope they add it in the future so we can have motion time lapse with manual camera settings.

    I saw another video that went over this "shake" when recording and even though the OIS is turned off, the actual lens doesn't stay locked when the phone is moved, there is still movement because the OIS can never fully be turned off. It was looked at in slo-mo and when touched, the camera lens still moves even when switched off.

      you can lock the lens with a small magnet

      I used a magnet from my Lifeproof box ;-) I had to adjust it so it did not affect my autofocus.

    iPhone ois does not turn off when it says it is. The camera still moves in the housing. Check iphonedo’s osmo mobile demostration.

    My iPhone 7 and Osmo Mobile work great together. I automatically bought and used Filmic Pro when I got my Osmo mobile due to its great reviews/recommendations. The only time my video was shaky was when I walked normally but when I used the proper technique that corrected the issue. Once again another great video!

  • @Ditispeter
    @Ditispeter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You have EIS (Electronic Image Stablization and OIC (Optical Image Stabilzation). The first you can switch off, but the second not.

  • @zonyyu8412
    @zonyyu8412 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem is when the OIS is turned off. When it’s turned on, the system is constantly sending an electrical signal based on the info from the gyro to the coils of wire in the stabilizer, locking the lens in a specific location that reflects what the gyro is reading. Because the lens is locked down by the electromagnets, it doesn’t jitter when shaken. On the contrary, OIS is disabled in the DJI app, and because of that, the lens is not locked down because the electromagnets are off, allowing it to float freely. You can test it yourself. Turn off the OIS in filmic pro, with another device to record the back of the iPhone 7 Plus at 240 FPS. When recording, use your finger and tap the side of the phone. You should see the lens wobble in the final footage. Do the same with OIS turned on, and you’ll notice it is much more stable

  • @Defender_Tom
    @Defender_Tom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    so if it isn't the iphone's built in optic stabilization, how come the jittering goes away when you use the 2x lens (that doesn't have optical stabilization?) Filmic pro OIS is built into the app, it doesnt actually turn it off on your iphone, so that is why you still get jittering regardless. switch it to 2x lens and it will work perfectly

    Did you happen to take the osmo/iPhone 7 combo skiing with you? If you took any footage while skiing down the mountain I'm curious how you thought it performed?

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Andrew DeVries When I went skiing I used my Osmo Mobile with the GoPro using the rubber band trick. Didn't want to use my phone as the GoPro has a much wider field of view. I think it probably would have performed ok, but with the wind I feel as though it may have knocked it off calibration as the phone catches a lot of the wind when going down hill. Hope that made sense lol

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Netcruzer I was in the same boat. The way that I did it was to go to iTunes and then click on the device you have plugged in. Go to the apps stored on the device and scroll down to file sharing. Once you click on the DJI Go app, look for the folder titled "video cache." Drag that to your computer and it should transfer all files stored on the DJI Go app. Hopefully that makes sense lol

  • @netcruzer
    @netcruzer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, You should also try 'Movie Pro' as it has OFF, Standard, and Cinematic stability modes. Remember that there is OIS and EIS, and we never really know what the 'stability' options are doing regarding both of those. Up until now I was under the impression that the stability options in Filmic Pro or Movie Pro were for EIS only.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Netcruzer I have seen plenty of other apps that can be good for the Osmo Mobile. I chose Filmic Pro just because of its Osmo compatibility and based on the good reviews I have read.

    • @netcruzer
      @netcruzer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 3 osmo control stick modes in Filmic Pro are nice features, but I would love to see them try to add ActiveTrack to Filmic. That is the best feature of DJI GO. Personally I like the UI of Movie Pro more, it is cheaper than Filmic, and has some features like pause rec, and cinematic stability not in Filmic.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Netcruzer I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate the interface of Filmic Pro. It looks very outdated, but the functionality is still there.

    personally, I think anyone interested in flying a DJI drone for photography reasons should try the OSMO first... Best Buy offers an extended warranty on the OSMO for $75 (two years)... if you are heavy user, it might be worth it... not sure. thx for the comparison... I prefer to shoot video in the default OS X Photo App, as I don't like fiddling around the w/ share feature via a 3rd party environment. The Active Tracking Option is available in the DJI App, and that is super cool. The OSMO Mobile consumes a lot of battery juice... would be prudent to have a couple batteries on hand too. thx for the video of the App comparison...

    Zhiyun smooth gimbals have the same issue with their gimbal apps. They last update it about months ago with zero compatibility with other Android phones. As for third party apps to use with either gimbals...forget it. it's a very narrow selection. Either use the app that goes with the gimbal or don't waste your money.

    Any thoughts on the Filmic companion app “Filmic Remote”? I intend to place my OSMO 2 on a tall tripod/light stand and attempt to use active track for sports (I am fully aware this will probably fail miserably unless there is only a single subject in frame). The Filmic remote app allows you to use an iPad or other iOS device to remote control the app. My Osmo 2 arrives tomorrow and I’ll be giving it a shot asap. If active track doesn’t work well for my application, I may just use the remote app to control it like a pan/tilt head. I went through 2 different Soloshot 3 units and they just aren’t ready for prime time AT ALL. Figured I’d try this solution before reverting back to a traditional video camera and pan/tilt head. From everything I have read/watched, it certainly appears that while the OIS on iPhones is great for traditional uses, the floating nature of the mechanism doesn’t lend itself to gimbals very well (thus gimbal steadies the phone, but not the floating camera inside...OIS in combination with gimbal seem to be a multi-part solution...the gimbal corrects most of the shakes and the OIS continues to do it’s thing on the micro vibrations). A non-OIS system (in theory) should work better with a gimbal.. But I digress. Love your channel.

    So if OIS is not the root of the gittering, what could it be? Thank your for this awesome video, I want to buy a osmo mobile, but with an iphone 7+ this wobble problem is not what I expect from a stabilizer.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chris_zueger Not too sure exactly what the problem is

    • @murhode
      @murhode 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris_zueger The current wisdom and it seems reasonable is that it isn't s software setting. OIS on our off isn't the issue. The lenses are spring mounted. Software can't turn this off. The gimbal makes small changes very quickly. This causes the lens to move which causes jitter. Perhaps the rate of movement for the gimbal could be changed to help reduce this. This is a dji problem. There isn't a problem on the iPhone without OIS.

      @JadeSambrook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OIS is always on. There is no way to turn it off as it is a mechanical feature built into the camera module, hence the term 'optical' image stabilization. Not even Apple can turn off OIS, unless they build in some type of mechanical brake or magnet to stop the mechanical OIS. The only stabilization that can be turned off using a third party app like FiLMiC Pro is the auto or cinematic stabilization which is software based and has nothing to do with OIS which again, is physically built into the camera module.

    The jittering must be in the gyro over-compensating, much like PID tuning in a flight controller. The big phones probably throw the balance out of whack and the gimbal motors may be just a little weak. Too bad because I have a 7+ and have been wanting an Osmo for months 🤔🤓

      I use the tripod and the extension rod that I use, I find it more noticable the longer it takes for the timelapse. It looks ok on the mobile screen, but not if you want to use it in a clip on youtube. Its annoying to run everything through warp stabilizer pre-recording.

      You may be able to use the universal mount and put your phone off to the side and "trick" the osmo into thinking your phone is recording when you have the Hero in the actual gimbal. Just a thought.

    Very very helpful! Thanks. Have you tried using an external lens like "Moment lens" I want to add an external wide angle lens on my iPhone 7 plus, but I heard Osmo gimble can't handle the extra weight. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

  • @MrEye4get
    @MrEye4get 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    DJI definitely needs to add a micro-adjustment feature for all three axis settings. So many different phone sizes and weights. Face tracking is impossible to use yourself. You need someone to set the tracking for you if you plan to leave the Osmo on a tripod or stand for Vlogs.

    Thanks Billy, it a great video. I believe you're right about the DJI Go app turning off the OIS per default. (I have a iPhone 7 Plus as well)
    But I have a problem when you see spending 10 bucks on a very well developed and advanced piece of software (Filmic Pro) as a drawback. The team behind Filmic Pro are making a great effort and wants to make a living from it! I think you should re-think your attitude and recommending your peers to support Filmic Pro and actually buy the app instead.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Hjorth I just am frustrated that DJI Go is not a go to solution. The app that comes with the device should be flawless. I myself have no problem spending $10 on a great application, but I know others will.

    • @thomashjorth586
      @thomashjorth586 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, the DJI app could need som TLC. alternatively Active track would be awesome in Filmic Pro. It's one of main reasons I bought the Osmo Mobile

  • @zoti
    @zoti 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The OIS is not fighting the Osmo. The lens for the OIS is fitted on small springs and when the IS of the iPhone is turned off the lens bounces and creates the jittering effect.

    Hi, i have problem with active tracking, it wasn’t working 😐 please help me

  • @JadeSambrook
    @JadeSambrook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is no way to turn off the OIS, not even apple can turn it off, as it is a mechanical feature built into the camera module. The only stabilization you can turn off with a third party app like FiLMiC pro is the auto or cinematic stabilization, which is software based and has nothing at all to do with OIS.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jade Sambrook Interesting. Either way it seems that you get better results with the filmic pro application

    • @JadeSambrook
      @JadeSambrook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, agreed, because FilMiC Pro is a kick ass app that is a total steal for the measly $12 they charge to buy it. The DJI Go has some neat features specific to the gimbal, and does the job, but is nowhere near equal to FiLMIC Pro.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jade Sambrook Agreed. Active track on the Osmo Mobile is not all that necessary

  • @CC_FPV
    @CC_FPV 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice video. Good food for thought. Do you think there is any difference at all in the way the Osmo works with different apps. I don’t mean the recording I mean how fast it reacts etc? I take it that if you change the sensitivity from day Walk to Sport the effects are the same whatever app is then used?

    Another great video...I have the Osmo Mobile and have been using the Filmic Pro app...
    Even one of the DJI guys said on the DJI Forum that the Filmic Pro app is superior and should be used with the Osmo Mobile. Also like I can have an external mic using the Filmic Pro app

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeff Walrich Haven't used an external mic as I usually don't use the sound when I record using my Osmo Mobile. I love the filmic pro app as well, definitely worth the money.

    I think the problem is that even when the camera stabilization is turned off the lens still floats in its housing, just tap the phone and look closely at the camera to see what I mean. If the lens was fixed when OIS was off that would probably fix it.

    Great video, thank you for the demos. Might pick up the Filmic Pro app at some point. For now, I'm sticking with the stock camera app and the OSMO combo and the DJI app/OSMO combo. I'm using a 6+ and the footage in the later combo seems much more stable that yours.

    the problem is the mechanical spring that is used with the ois. Whether OIS is on or off, this mechanical spring can not be turned off and is the root cause of the jitter. Ask DJI, they will give the same answer.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +d3extreme Interesting. With the rest I did I noticed that the DJI Go app actually yields the worst results. The best apps to use are Filmic Pro and the stock iOS camera app.

    Now the Filmic Pro is 14,99 USD,

    What about battery usage? I heard the DJI app is a drainage of battery time.

  • @JSGilbert
    @JSGilbert 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You’re a bit off on the iPhones IOS. It’s mechanical. You don’t turn it off. The workaround has been to use a small neodymium magnet, which essentially locks the mechanical stabilization of the phone. Google around and you’ll see why this is important information.
