If you should stand up for a Torah sage,not because of how much, or what he knows,but more for the EFFORT he put in to acquire that knowledge - then why not do that for everyone acquiring Holy knowledge - because you really DON'T KNOW how hard this person worked, to achieve what he did?
The very fact that people in the world still experience pain and suffering is due to the mystical truth that God's Divine Presence in the world, the Shechinah, is still suffering along with us in our temporary condition of spiritual exile and the continuing destruction of His dwelling place, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

The idea of accepting G-D's love through suffering is the HARDEST thing to do in Judaism and it's probably the main reason why so many - leave!
