Yes, he is truly amazing. When I was young, I listened to a lot of Art Van Damme's records, but I'm really ashamed that I didn't take the time to find out who this incredible vibes player was. I had the chance to play twice with Art Van Damme during his tour in Switzerland. I was quite afraid that Art would be disappointed not to find the quality of Charlie Calzaretta's game compared to mine. He didn't say anything about it... but that's probably mainly because Art was a gentleman ;-)
hi Tim i am Italian vibraphonist , i would love to see in your NEXT VIDEO " Taddy Charles" he 's a vibraphonist i' listening to a lot....., Thanks for everything you do Mr. TIM COLLINS.........thanks
I used to play drums with Teddy Charles in Long Island. I also studied with him on vibraphone. Great player but as we say, quite of a "son of a gun." He at one point owned a large schooner that he used to take tourists out in Greenport, N.Y.
Yeah I actually have him in mind- didn’t he quit playing and just captain a ship in the Caribbean for 30 years or so? I have a couple of his records. Cool stuff.
Yes, exactly. A fan of his (and jazz player) happened to be in Caribbean and went on one of his cruises and suddenly asked, are you the Teddy Charles the vibraphonist? I spent a lot of time with him, very smart guy. By the way Tim, I have bought your book and love your videos. I am mainly a drummer but studied classical marimba at Oberlin and am relearning the vibes (Musser grip). @@TimCollinsVibes
truly honored!!!! have you played with Taddy????? really crazy.... did you know that David Friedman studied arrangement and composition whit him??? I love Charles and the story of the old sea dog perhaps explains his way of playing as free as the waves @@andrewcollier9167
Thank you Tim for producing this stuff, most appreciated. Looking forward to see and hear you in June in Unterfahrt Jazz-Club Munich. Sorry, I can not make it to NY ;-).
Calzaretta is on it! Some of his solos remind me of Godfrey Hirsch's who both were self-taught. Godfrey played with Louie Prima as well as Pete Fountain.
🎉u always have the koolest videos with the transcriptions 🎉 thank you so much for sharing this hope you are well God loves you deeply shalom 🤗🐼♥️✝️💐 Philippians 4:8
That was really good!! Is there any way you could show the vibes solo from "The Cantina Band" track on the 1977 (I think) Meco album 'Star Wars and other Galactic Funk' - That solo inspired me to pay vibes - Thanks Tim!
@@TimCollinsVibes So he would have heard the early bebopers by then I guess. Just think how many other great players there were who never got recorded much but were as good as those that did.
And here I thought that Terry Gibbs was the pinnacle of the "lost" vibraphonists. Thanks for expanding my personal musical horizon. Danke Schoen!

Awesome 👏
Yeah, it’s great! Some of those fast triplets look really hard on the vibes

Great! Do you know Manfred Burzlaff? He was a Berlin based Vibraphonist.🎼🎶
No! Will check him out.
My friend Tomas Galliano is Richard’s son. He plays and lives in Paris now.

Two pearls about him and the Van Damme group.
had to tell from that short snippet, what year was it recorded?
I thought he was very Lionel Hampton with the exception of the phrase you pointed out. Definitely a great player.
1953
