Great explanation! I’ve been trying to achieve the crazy quilt block by mostly thinking about it in my head first. I finally made my first one as a placemat. It looks great but I had no idea how to replicate what I did! ha ha! Now with your great instruction, without having to buy templates or sew on paper, I can do it. THANKS! I love all your how to videos!
Thanks Hope! This looks like fun and I like the manageable squares. Do you prewash? I wonder if muslin shrinks more. I would like to skip the batting and hand or machine embroider in places. Batting would say how far apart to quilt, but if no batting, is there a guide for how far apart to quilt?
I do not pre-wash my fabrics. I love the vintage feel when they shrink slightly. For batting I would suggest Embellish Angel Loft Bamboo Batting. If you want a premium batting that you don't have to quilt close we have a fusible called Embellish Premium Fusible Batting www.RNK-Embellish.clom to find out more info.
D H in the past when I and my students have trimmed prior to the tail becoming a seam allowance we occasionally trimmed too short or on the wrong angle and by the time we got back around then there was a hole.

This is a planned quilt, not a crazy quilt. They used what they had, meaning all kinds of scraps and colors and hand made. And as they tore they patched it so it started to look crazy. You have way too many rules.
I agree ! So far all videos I have cn on making a crazy quilt used new color cordinated fabric. I haven cn a real crazy quilt yet. My grandma called them patched quilts she dosnt like her grandmas quilts being called crazy. So I call them patched quilts.

@@elementalsound7186 Make the quilt using yr own desings that's what I did. I never followed any rules or patterns. I learned 2 quilt by just sewing sm square pieces 2gether. There r many videos on google that shows a few ways 2 make a crazy quilt. Some I like some I didnt but u do gain ideas by watching them. Good luck & just go sew! All the quilts have a place according to your preference. Years ago I enjoyed books by Judith Baker Montano. Showed beautiful embroidery and piecing and some historical quilts. A lot of people now have the modern scraps from another project and are enjoying this type and it is beautiful too without having to be a historical replication. The old ones often used some velvet. I think sewn with newspaper that was left in as those quilts were not washed.
It looks like you lost one of the five sides because after the first round, each round only had only four sides. If you’ll notice, the smallest line in the center block doesn’t go “to infinity and beyond.” You basically have a wonky four sided log cabin with an interesting center piece. This could’ve been avoided if you had trimmed off tails before they became seam allowances. The five sides would’ve been more obvious.
That is a way of doing it, but not what I was looking for. I’m not a fan of this technique with the center piece. It doesn’t come out looking right to me. My eye follows the strips around that center piece and it ruins the crazy quilt design of a true crazy quilt. So, I still have questions and will continue my search. Thank you.
Hope Yoder personally I think it’s a great technique. Love your teaching style. I’m a pretty good quilter but I’ve never made a crazy quilt. It may be time to change that. 😬

It doesn't matter which way. It's just personal preference.

Does this approach work only for scraps that are in nice, even strips?
I think it would work for anything with one straight edge so you could use a 1/4" seam allowance and follow the seamline

I don't know why you have to wait to trim a strip til it is in a seam allowance....I just trim as i go after each strip is sewn and it is fine.

Harphoney I normally use a thin muslin as my base and it never seems to be too thick. I’d had wonderful results using this method.

Couldn’t you do that as a quilt as you go without sashing i done it with a string quilting it was good felt like i was missing a step lol

shirley porter in order to use this method you need a foundation piece of fabric so you have a medium to sew the strips to.
Why do you say always anticlockwise ? I always sew clockwise and have not had any problems.

exactly what I noticed - she skipped one of the angles on the second round.
Maybe, just guessing, if the 5 sided center had all sides closer to the same length, the 5th side wouldn't have been lost.
