Great to see this again! I worked on this game back when I was lead 3D artist at High Voltage, the company that ported it over from the Jaguar. Many many many hours spent playing this at home, pushing to see how crazy and psychedelic it could get. I created the opening Tempest logo animation (the part that starts with the blue fireballs). We put in an Easter Egg: if you enter your high score initials G A Y, you get a pink triangle web spinning around on the High Score screen background - Happy Pride, happy gaming!!
I was a Tempest kid in the arcade in '82, and then on Jaguar, but this was my favorite shooter on PS. The constantly changing challenges and pace of the levels are master game design. 20 years later I can still pick this up get lost in it for hours. A Jeff Minter masterpiece.
An old review by GamePro magazine of the Jaguar version said it best - "Mix up a coffee and Jolt Cola milkshake, chase it down with a handful of Vivarin, and you're just about ready for this game's intensity level."
Man. This screams early 90s video gaming. I love it haha My dad and uncle used to go to the arcades in the 80s. They made sure I was familiar with a lot of older games from Williams and Atari. I appreciated a lot of those remakes we got during this time; Centipede, Frogger, Robotron, etc
There's a real sense of deep regret that I never ever got to play let alone own the PS1 version of Tempest 2000 sigh....But I never ever saw this game out there in the market....

I was just commenting on the Jag's version's sound yesterday. It really is excellent. The music does not sound like a cart and the effects are spot on.

Tempest 2000 was the only Jaguar game I liked, so when this dropped on ps1, i was finally able to ditch that shitty console

This might be one of the flashiest PS1 games I've ever seen..
As a fan of the arcade original I loved this game back in the day, I think Jeff Minter programmed it and it definitely shows.
If you're not epieptic, this game is certanly gonna make you one, be careful

There are quite a lot of "buried" games, unless you're a fan or happen to find it, they're really hard to get.
I actually found out about it after I learned about Tempest 2000. I was going to get it off of amazon, but I think it's a bit of a rarity of a game...

Excellent version of the classic but I slightly prefer the Jaguar. Imo the Jaguar uses the sound better and the colours are much better and varied.

I wish the sfx in this version had carried over into Tempest 4k, 4k is amazing but I miss the powerup appearing sound so bad lol.

doesn't seem as good as Tempest 3000 on the Nuon enhanced DVD player unfortunately but still good.

Graphic effects of this version are very poor compared to T2K on Jaguar effects.
