Because these 20 minutes have more ideas than hours and hours of basic rock. Same thing for Odyssey, and they could be longer because the "prophet cries" moment is too short, and similarly the Cyclop in Odyssey is too short. This band is also on the top level of melody, especially with "all is lost", and on the top level of guitar riff with "Eve of seduction"... and we also have strong suites with DT, "a change of seasons" or "in the presence of enemies", so many ideas in 25 minutes each. In an ocean of dull basic rock, some prog rock or prog metal guys have the balls to try to bring some light.
I adore this piece. It reminds me of my youth. It has been an inspiration to me for many years. Allen's one-man choir prologue has always been my favorite part, followed by the use of Holst's Mars theme. Romeo's rhythm work kicks so much ass. And I bought a J-Bass and have engineered many bass tones over the years based solely on Thomas Miller's astounding playing in this album. The whole work is a masterpiece of prog.

A metal singer every bit as good as Ronnie James Dio fronting a neo prog band every bit as good as Dream Theater (well almost). This is a winning combination! SX is simply awesome.
I wondered why he left and this is what Michael Romeo said: "I knew Tom for many years, and still I am not sure of the exact reasons. I can only guess from what we (the band) saw. On the first tour in Japan, Tom was very stressed about the situation of touring. There were several episodes where he became sick, had anxiety attacks, etc. Then there was the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which he claims he had...and was also getting into this religion thing. So all these added up and he eventually said " I can't do this anymore.". We have no bad feelings toward Tom, and I still find it hard to believe - that someone who I grew up with, played in numerous bands with, and was totally dedicated to music, somehow lost interest. Was it the fear of touring, sickness, or religion? I can not answer that question, only Tom knows why. But whatever it is that he is doing now, we wish him the best." It's sad, kind of like Paradise Lost all over again.
Some sources say he had a bad relationship with Jason Rullo. EDIT: It probably isn’t true. They toured together for a while in the Twilight in Olympus tour. Not even Romeo knows why Miller left, though.

If I tried to select some works (i'm too much in progressive rock to call them "songs") for a "best of" Symphony X, i would have a "problem" with Divine Wings, i would select all works on this album except maybe one (sins and shadows). Divine Wings, Eyes of Medusa, witching Hour, Candlelight Fantasia... everything is intense, no break...
The most exciting experience into Prog-Metal were the early days of Symphony X, this is the main proof and evidence, a masterpiece influenced by The Symphony of the planets obviously
Anyone ever notice how the beginning bears a similarity to the Airship theme from Super Mario Bros. 3? Found out that and the Divine Wings of Tragedy (heck, let's not forget Am I Evil et al) are renditions of Mars, The Bringer of War.
"And all I know, is my paradise has begun" gives me goosebumps every single time

6 year old comment. But I’m just going to say that I’m shocked that you actually predicted that. Nice job.
I must admit, I only ever made time to listen to all this song while me and Mary Jane were getting it on. What a great idea that was!
I hate it how I'm not able to stop repeating this track.
(Part I - At the Four Corners of the Earth)
On the edge of paradise
Tears of woe fall, cold as ice
Hear my cry
Renounce, have you, thy name
Eternal is my pain
Eternal is the pain that leads me
To the thrones of temptation
Eternal is the pain that leads me
To the thrones of temptation ...
(Part II - In the Room of Thrones)
(Instrumental)
Part III - A Gathering of Angels
(Michael Romeo)
There was a time ...
When nine choirs sang the
Endless melody of light
Music of the spheres
There was a place ...
Where mortals embraced
Thunder and majesty
Their fate lay in our hands
Feel my wings slowly fading
Forever lost in time - I cry
Part IV - The Wrath Divine
(Michael Romeo, Thomas Miller)
The burning conflict I'm feeling
It summons me
To descend into the other side
And just beyond the stars blazing
A beam light from a red velvet moon
Illuminates me
I will devise, from perfect skies
A dark and vengeful day
Faith and mercy gone astray
With strength of infinite measure
The mighty sword divides order
From chaos in the kingdom below
And from the mansions of glory
This empty soul cries out one final plea...
The end has begun
Our worlds collide, now in disguise
You'll feel the Wrath Divine
Tears of woe fall from the sky ...
Part V - The Prophet's Cry
(Michael Romeo)
The prophet cries
Vast battalions rage on in the sky
Rising from the north
- the bringer of war
Eve of destruction
Summon all who have 'power over fire'
Impending doom from shore to shore
Standing on the edge of paradise
I sacrifice my truth and loyalty
Seven deadly sins consume you all
A dance with death
I taste the victory
(Eternal is the pain that leads me to temptation)
Rising from the north
- the warrior prince
Judgement without compassion
Eyes of fear
Like the river styx
The gates of hell
"Abandon hope all ye who enter here"
The prophet's cry
As armies fall from the edge of the sky
The Prince of truth, now the bringer of war
The day of wrath
Banish all kings from the face of the land
Dominion for strength is my name
Part VI - Bringer of the Apocalypse
(Instrumental)
Eve of Sacrifice/Armies in the Sky/Dies Irae *
Part VII - Paradise Regained
(Russel Allen, Michael Pinnella)
Looking out on a blue sky
I can see a new world arising
Like a prisoner unbound
I feel the power and the majesty again
Looking up to the heavens
I can see what I left behind
Beneath the stars, moon and warm sun
And all I know
Is my paradise has begun...
Piel de gallina, suspiros, hasta se me agita la respiración con este disco, será amor???
Best era for sure, still remains unbeaten \m/
its just so beautiful... I love it!
Long songs are usually masterpieces, now listen to X Japan - Art of Life (LIVE)
And at 1:43, it's quoting "Mars" from The Planets by Holst.
20:42 minutes of perfection.
My favorite part starts at 4:10
Damn, that song... THAT SONG...
Starscream That guitar and piano together is simply amazing, that part alone makes this my favorite song from them.
That part is so god damn... gripping? Familiar sounding? Catchy? That you swear you've heard it a million times. I mean I've probably heard it a million times from this song, but it just seems so... something. Then of course the reprise at the end is fucking magical.
That part is actually pretty similar to the outro of Revelation from their Paradise Lost album
@@halbgefressen9768 I think that part is from the accolade
Tears of woe fall from the sky.......8:04 I cry every time too
'18:51' touches deep into my soul
Amo esta canción … es perfecta
1:42 is obviously Mars from Gustav Holst
Yeah that is the most influential classical piece in metal history, there is in a lot of songs.
with the difference being Mars was in 5/4 and this is in 7/4
Diamond Head used it as well in Am I Evil.
@@BobbyJr_ nice to see the lads from Stourbridge get a mention.
And Airship theme from mario
If I tried to select some works (i'm too much in progressive rock to call them "songs") for a "best of" Symphony X, i would have a "problem" with Divine Wings, i would select all works on this album except maybe one (sins and shadows). Divine Wings, Eyes of Medusa, witching Hour, Candlelight Fantasia... everything is intense, no break...
Where's the break in sins and shadows?
Wow. Coming back to my teenage. What a masterpiece. Sooooo fuckin' great!!!!
A queda do diabo, que prog clássico!!! Vida longa ao Symphony x.
Awesome ! Much appreciate !.. By the way if you readind this you are a wonderfull !!!
... Just perfection in one piece :3
thanks for the music !
18:50 That wonderful passage!!

Heartgasm-
Ah....Gustav Holst's Mars. Always spicing up the hype for dark stuff. Perfecto.
11:04 Obviously The Miracle by Queen
The most exciting experience into Prog-Metal were the early days of Symphony X, this is the main proof and evidence, a masterpiece influenced by The Symphony of the planets obviously
Masterpiece!!
Mi favorita esta banda de metal progresivo symphony x
Loved this video! All the best!!
8:03 so beautiful
Mi parte favorita: 11:03 - 11:50. Pero no tiene sentido si no la escuchas desde el principio.
Thomas Miller's bass gave the band a brutal sound
Yea, I think that is Warwick bass, so distinct tone.
Anyone ever notice how the beginning bears a similarity to the Airship theme from Super Mario Bros. 3? Found out that and the Divine Wings of Tragedy (heck, let's not forget Am I Evil et al) are renditions of Mars, The Bringer of War.
Lol I thought I was the only one *highfive*
