Symphony X - The divine wings of tragedy (full song)

- On the edge of paradise
Tears of woe fall, cold as ice
Hear my cry
Renounce, have you, thy name
Eternal is my pain
Eternal is the pain that leads me
to the thrones of temptation
Eternal is the pain that leads me
to the thrones of temptation ...
There was a time ...
When nine choirs sang the endless melody of light
Music of the spheres
There was a place ...
Where mortals embraced thunder and majesty
Their fate lay in our hands
Feel my wings slowly fading -
forever lost in time - I cry
The prophet cries
Vast battalions rage on in the sky
Rising from the north - the bringer of war
Eve of destruction
Summon all who have 'power over fire'
Impending doom from shore to shore
Standing on the edge of paradise
I sacrifice my truth and loyalty
Seven deadly sins consume you all, a dance with death
I taste the victory
(Eternal is the pain that leads me to temptation)
Rising from the north - the warrior prince
Judgement without compassion eyes of fear
Like the river styx, the gates of hell -
"Abandon hope all ye who enter here"
The prophets cry
As armies fall from the edge of the sky
The Prince of truth, now the bringer of war
The day of wrath
Banish all kings from the face of the land
Dominion for strength is my name
Looking out on a blue sky
I can see a new world arising
Like a prisoner unbound
I feel the power and the majesty again
Looking up to the heavens
I can see what I left behind
Beneath the stars, moon and warm sun
And all I know, is my paradise has begun ...
The burning conflict I'm feeling
It summons me to descend into
the other side
And just beyond the stars blazing
A beam light from a red, velvet
moon illuminates me
I will devise, from perfect skies
A dark and vengeful day
Faith and mercy gone astray
With strength of infinite measure
The mighty sword divides order
from chaos in the kingdom below
And from the mansions of glory,
This empty soul cries out one final plea ...
The end has begun
Our worlds collide, now in disguise,
You'll feel the Wrath Divine
Tears of woe fall from the sky ...
After 20 years...this epic song is still untouchable !!!
Been my favorite song for 19 years. Honestly, I'm tired of it being my favorite but I feel like I've gotten old to the point where I just can't like music like I did in my teens/early 20s so this one might hold on til I'm in a pine box.
@@blakfloyd Have you tried:
Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno
Epica - Kingdom of Heaven and The Holographic Principle
Theocracy - The Mirror of Souls
Rhapsody (of Fire) - Gargoyles, Queen of the Dark Horizons and The Wizard's Last Rhymes
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence
.. and the obvious ones, Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons, Octavariums and The Count of Tuscany?

A masterpiece!! mi favorite part is 0:00 - 20:42!!
+ReyRex Nogard Agreed. This is quite possibly the most underrated song in all existence (my opinion, of course heh.)
poor little 20:43 :'(

@@georgigurchev4033 I think intro is astonishing
That moment when you listen to a song with a an album picture for 20 min but the music makes you see a video clip in your mind , only then you know that symphony x are beyond reality
this song could be the perfect castelevania ost
The start of the "Looking out on the blue sky" part starts for me musically at 16:43. That ending section the music freaking magical. And the lyric to end it. Pure perfection
dont know why i cant stop listenning to this and the odyssey
***** 'Cus they're god damn masterpieces. ;)
ShadowKingSprites u godamn right
Dude me too this past month those 2 songs have been played like 50 times each, that's saying a lot since they're both over 20 mins long
+Alexandre Texas It's because you -- like so many others here on this page -- have an impeccable taste in quality music :p.
Because these 20 minutes have more ideas than hours and hours of basic rock. Same thing for Odyssey, and they could be longer because the "prophet cries" moment is too short, and similarly the Cyclop in Odyssey is too short. This band is also on the top level of melody, especially with "all is lost", and on the top level of guitar riff with "Eve of seduction"... and we also have strong suites with DT, "a change of seasons" or "in the presence of enemies", so many ideas in 25 minutes each. In an ocean of dull basic rock, some prog rock or prog metal guys have the balls to try to bring some light.
The "Looking out on a blue sky..." part is seriously one of the most beautiful musical passages my ears ever had the pleasure of hearing. No exaggeration, no bullshit.
amen
Every now and then, I come back to this song, just to listen to this part, and I ain't even a metal fan anymore... For years.
18:50
Agree 100%
You spoke the truth.
Exactly Brendan. I've been listening to symphony x, every single day for over 10 years now and i'm still noticing small things, and appreciating things I previously hadn't given any thought.
Guys, I must say this song is amazing. The beggining with all the voices is so breathtaking and beautiful, and the rest of the song is so bad-ass and awesome (the guitar and keyboards especially). I can honestly say that this song was the first song i heard by Symphony X and its definately not the last one ever since. Seriously this is probably the best song by Symphony X. Long Live The X!!
Fun Fact: This album was released on January 1st of 1997 (what a great way to start a year and an album)
One of the better forms of escapism.
That section at 10:29 is one of the most kick-ass things I have ever heard. And the outro is just stunningly beautiful. This song is a masterpiece.
The 47 idiots who disliked this, have no idea of how complicated and fucking awesome is this piece of art. Masters at work...
Uma brasileira que conhece essa banda. Obrigado por existir, estava perdendo esperanças.
i don't really know why, but this song speaks to me in ways few other songs can.
I'm obsessed with listening to this piece of guitar work at 13:59
Every time I listen to this song I'm blown away by the scope and skill of this band.
The outro is my favorite part. Epic song all the way through, but the end is like a fucking masterpiece for me.
I'm a relatively new SX fan, at first I preferred odyssey but divine wings really grew on me this song is fucking epic, I love these guys mike and russell are fucking gods. Hope they release another album soon iconoclast was the shit.
Despite the fact that their new Albums are wonderful, I'm still waiting for a masterpiece like this, The Odyssey, Through the Looking Glass and some others!
Gustavo Costa I really want them to make a concept album or at least a full on epic track on the epic of Gilgamesh.
@@mangafreak923 That would certainly be epic ..
Until that time should materialize ..

I miss Thomas Miller on bass, when in Symphony X the basslines were powerful
I wondered why he left and this is what Michael Romeo said:
"I knew Tom for many years, and still I am not sure of the exact reasons. I can only guess from what we (the band) saw. On the first tour in Japan, Tom was very stressed about the situation of touring. There were several episodes where he became sick, had anxiety attacks, etc. Then there was the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which he claims he had...and was also getting into this religion thing. So all these added up and he eventually said " I can't do this anymore.". We have no bad feelings toward Tom, and I still find it hard to believe - that someone who I grew up with, played in numerous bands with, and was totally dedicated to music, somehow lost interest. Was it the fear of touring, sickness, or religion? I can not answer that question, only Tom knows why. But whatever it is that he is doing now, we wish him the best."
It's sad, kind of like Paradise Lost all over again.
Some sources say he had a bad relationship with Jason Rullo.
EDIT: It probably isn’t true. They toured together for a while in the Twilight in Olympus tour.
Not even Romeo knows why Miller left, though.
@@nicoloenricorimoldi7425 But wasn't Jason on paternity leave for Twilight in Olympus?
@SGRev1 Yeah, but after TiO Rullo came back and Miller left.

I adore this piece. It reminds me of my youth. It has been an inspiration to me for many years. Allen's one-man choir prologue has always been my favorite part, followed by the use of Holst's Mars theme. Romeo's rhythm work kicks so much ass. And I bought a J-Bass and have engineered many bass tones over the years based solely on Thomas Miller's astounding playing in this album. The whole work is a masterpiece of prog.
It's a shame Thomas miller quit music he was a great player.
The homage to Bach's Mass in B Minor at the beggining is very well neat up against Gustav Holst's Mars.
18:48 Definitely one of the most heavenly moments ever written, years later and I still get goosebumps and teary eyes.
Beyond words that a human can come up with such a melody and vocal combination.
In case your interested the choir at the begging is a quotation from Bach's Mass in B Minor BWV 232: Et Expecto resurrectionem mortuorum. That is title to search for. Great stuff.
th-cam.com/video/MYzyQ7roCyk/w-d-xo.html
Yes, if one thinks SX is epic ..
Bach's Mass is 1:40:00+ ..
That's an hour and 40 minutes plus ..
th-cam.com/video/tDteccEwZNI/w-d-xo.html
I was actually wondering where I've already heard that passage. Thanks a lot for bringing light on it.👏🏻
And from 1:48 Gustav Holst „Planets“. In this case „Mars“
That's incorrect. The passage quoted here is from the ending of Confiteor unum baptisma. Only after that comes Et expect ressurrectionem mortuorum.
@@gabrielnascimento161 oh really? I was just going by the track name on my cell case lol
still gives me the old beautiful CHILLS in 2020 LOVE YOU
The best symphony x album 🙄❤😁🤟
Actually, it's an excerpt from JS Bach's Mass in B Minor. Sacred music, but certainly not Russian Orthodox.
On a side note, anyone who likes Sym X should listen to the B Minor Mass. Its genius is indescribable.
Russian Orthodox is heresy.
A song of 20 minutes, but no one second bored.
2018
I see you're a man of culture, too
This is Symphony X
@@StarContract Thanks! For me Symphony X is the best metal band of all!
I was first exposed to dreamtheater, but the poetic historical beauty of symphony x i think has had more impact in the underground prog world, i love songs like this that create a true atmosphere
This is my #1 song from this band. If you scroll to 1:43 that part reminds me of the computer game Outpost ( a survival space game) when i was young back in the 90s. cool tune and awesome song. Dream Theater pandora station led me into this band..1st time I heard this band ... cool band .. Love hard progressive rock
Thank you for acknowledging Milton. Paradise Lost is one of my favorites, but we really need a better Divine Comedy interpretation by Symphony X; Inferno in the Odyssey wasn't as satisfactory as I wanted. Fingers crossed for the next album being about the Divine Comedy.
Edit: What did I say? Called it.
6 year old comment. But I’m just going to say that I’m shocked that you actually predicted that. Nice job.
18:51 - End. Pure epicness.
Russell Allen is the closest to Ronnie James Dio That I’ve have heard in a vocalist, superb talent, truly a gift from God.
Comparing DT with Symphony X? Bitch please, how about comparing Symphony X to Super Mario? Dat airship BGM at the beginning!
Both are based on Mars by Gustav Holst suite of the planets.
This might just be one of the best songs ever recorded. Perfection at its finest.
this materpiece is incredibly good
1:42 is obviously Mars from Gustav Holst
Yeah that is the most influential classical piece in metal history, there is in a lot of songs.
with the difference being Mars was in 5/4 and this is in 7/4
Diamond Head used it as well in Am I Evil.
@@BobbyJr_ nice to see the lads from Stourbridge get a mention.
And Airship theme from mario
"A dark and VEEEEENGEful dayyyyyy".... good lord, them pipes !!!
Thomas Miller's bass gave the band a brutal sound
Yea, I think that is Warwick bass, so distinct tone.
Nothing can be compared to this masterpiece. The best song ever!

The Odyssey maybe???
A metal singer every bit as good as Ronnie James Dio fronting a neo prog band every bit as good as Dream Theater (well almost). This is a winning combination! SX is simply awesome.
Russell's idol is Ronnie James Dio, I know that because he told me \,,/
If given the chance to unleash the Apocalypse, I'll use this song to play it in the background.

10:30 headbang time , 17:06 relax time , just epic.
As unworldly as this whole album is.. personally V:The new Mythology Suite is the better of the two albums for me and my own tastes.
What a masterpiece! Absolutely love this song
Long songs are usually masterpieces, now listen to X Japan - Art of Life (LIVE)
17:03 - 18:00 is clearly the best part of this song
... Just perfection in one piece :3
Mi parte favorita: 11:03 - 11:50. Pero no tiene sentido si no la escuchas desde el principio.
This would be perfect for an epic turn-based RPG final boss fight, particularly one that seems to go on forever, where the entire world is pretty much destroyed and all that's left is the heroes' fury and the sound of a billion lost souls crying for justice. The choir at the beginning could play during a dialog sequence before the fight starts, then the final battle begins with a bang and slowly grows more intense, with epic attacks in the vain of Final Fantasy VII's "Meteor" drawing out the conflict. Win or die, the heroes can only hope for life to return in due time.
goji3755 perfect
Yes. Especially if the main characters are from Symphony X and you have to summon Michael Romeo to shred the final boss in the face, while using Russell Allen's Death Cry lvl 4 limit break
Omg never read this comment and i actually dreamed about this days ago.

Devil May Cry 4
DWOT: When J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst, and John Milton teamed up to form write a prog metal song.
From a recent post I saw, a YT vocal coach reactor has wanted to listen to Symphony X. Charismatic Voice. And some others I would also suggest it to Julia Nilon and RVA. This and "The Odyssey" are true epic masterpieces.
If I tried to select some works (i'm too much in progressive rock to call them "songs") for a "best of" Symphony X, i would have a "problem" with Divine Wings, i would select all works on this album except maybe one (sins and shadows). Divine Wings, Eyes of Medusa, witching Hour, Candlelight Fantasia... everything is intense, no break...
Where's the break in sins and shadows?
2018... This piece is timeless
Omega Destroyer absolutely. that symphony x are not the most successful artist in the world is a travesty
oh this introduction! these voices! that's pure masterpiece!!

Don't fall into the so over-used mistake of comparing DT with SX ;)
They're like comparing apples to oranges, and I've been a fan of both since I was a young kid.
Celestina Ketzia Indeed! And I've been fan of both for a long time now :) Cheers Celestina :)
To me the point is clear DT bores me to death, Symphony X, not
Xoan García Sucks for you lol, even if both are great iconic progressive-metal bands there are always people like you posting lame comments and for some reason when people defend SX they do it by talking crap to DT and not being capable of mention any point or argument whatsoever. What is even funnier is that as much as you dislike or hate DT that won't ever mean they're bad, in fact I know DT is superior in several ways but I won't shit on SX unlike you guys do. I love them both :)
I don't really care dude DT keeps on boring me as you hahahaha

That part is so god damn... gripping? Familiar sounding? Catchy? That you swear you've heard it a million times. I mean I've probably heard it a million times from this song, but it just seems so... something. Then of course the reprise at the end is fucking magical.

This sounds ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like Dream Theater.
Symphony sounds way more interesting/intricate than DT, I love the theatrical bits in their music.
@phillyslasher I have to say that Labrie is just awful. His live performance is horrible and he doesn't even finish the "sentences" when singing.
@phillyslasher Jame LaBrie cannot dream even to sound as Metallic and bold as Russell himself is, but anyway, great bands both, SYmphony X is Epic, Dream Theater jazzy sophisticated as you said nothing alike
