'way cooler than YOU' taunted the journalists. 'Not us, mind..but you.' One thing Andrew Weatherall was effortlessly cooler than was the UK music press. He ran rings around every frustrated-DJ/producer journalist wannabe in every interview. He could do your job blindfolded. But you struggled to keep up with even one of his jobs.
Came up on my first pill listening to Andy Weatherall play, late in '88... truly one of the pivotal moments of my life. RIP mate... you will be missed.
Andy Weatherall has been such a massive inspiration to so many of mine and other acid house London 80's bods. He is just pure magic. From his early Shoom days to Sabresonic, all his remix work and introducing oddball leftfield tunes to others. He never ever sold out, never went up his own arse and comes across as such a genuine decent fella. Really such a gift and pleasure to know of him and follow his progress. He is so loved and such an asset to us. Can't compliment him enough really.
I’ve come back to this due to Andrew’s passing as this really does show what a delightfully interesting and interested human he was. Marvellously witty, a real loss to the planet.
This guy is the reason so many indie kids became dance music converts. He's a great guy, approachable, interesting and funny and still makes great, interesting music. I've seen him DJ loads of times, always excellent, on the decks he is unbeatable.
One of the few folk to support Genesis P Orridge ( Psychic TV) back in 1991 when he had to relocate to the USA, due to the damaging Dispatches documentary which levelled accusations that proved untrue. Andy financially helped Gen when loadsa so called friends refused. Great guy, much respect.
jazuk81 He is a great guy, I knew he was into TG and PTV but I never knew he actually reached out to help. I don't know what the situation with Gen is now, it was a witch hunt, literally, that had him flee the UK. I know he's been back in the last couple of years but is still based in the States.
Hi Anton, yep. It was on either a blog or interview by Gen, he/she mentioned Andy being one of the few to stand up and be counted when the going got tough. It just shows that help sometimes comes from unexpected quarters at times. Always like some of Andys stuff but he went way high n my expectations after that.
jazuk81 I've met Andy a few times when he used to DJ at the 'Herbal Tea Party' in Manchester back in the 90s. Very down to earth and very funny. I just remembered, I think the first release on Andy's Sabres Of Paradise label was a TG track. The good thing with Gen is that people are finally realising he was stitched up, I never saw the programme condemning him but I heard a lot about it and being familiar with TOPY material I can imagine what they put together. Some of those video images shown out of context and without explanation created the fear those producers wanted. I bet they never mentioned anything to do with Gen's philanthropic side.
Anton Haq 1991, i'm sitting there with my girlfriend, she had been a goth but was slowly becoming(mutating) into a born again Christian, that's bad enough, then this docu comes on, like you correctly say, total stitch up, satanic abuse etc all the usual bullshit attributed to TOPY and other groups/cults etc. She freaked out, gave me an ultimatum of getting rid of my Punk records and TG/PTV stuff and to change my appearance, I had dreads at the time, plus Gen had the dreads then too so she freaked more. Needless to say I got rid of her, but the following day it got worse. My friends who had been into TG/PTV etc had kinda believed this programmes accusations, one of my friends got attacked the following week due to his Psychic TV cross on his leather jacket, he painted over it. Years later after Scotland Yard raided Gens house the programme makers were discredited bigtime, despite loadsa Gens personal stuff still not bein returned. There's an actual list online of everything the police seized from Gens house and there's not one thing that could support the obvious underlying accusations that the UK Media were trying to make. Years later, the self proclaimed 'guardians of the moral order' the tories etc are being exposed for exactly what they tried to pin on TG and TOPY etc. Now, my friends regret ditching their TG/PTV records and have realised that the man is a total genius and not the devils disciple that they thought they'd been following. Back to the 'Dispatches' documentary, I do have it on a disc somewhere, god knows where as my spare room is covered in vinyl, dvds, cassettes etc, but if I find it i'd try to burn you a copy. Respect to you Anton.
I’ve learnt more about artistry in the last two days of researching Andrew Weatherall than I have in the last two years Thanks to the gods of TH-cam for the access to his wisdom 🙌
I'll never forget having the Two Lone Swordsmen The 5th Estate album and not really getting it, so unlike anything I'd heard before being 18 in 96. Imagine my delight on the first time I'd taken magic mushrooms returning home and putting it on randomly and being transported to a world of sounds, each track it's own biosphere of undulating sonics, each moment a new surprise to the senses. Flash forward 24 years and it's a peculiar, idiosyncratic piece of art that I'll forever hold dear to my heart. RIP AW.
Have mixed for ten years. Saw the cat in Glasgow in 2007 play a small club... actually played what I viewed at the time as "slowed down full on psytrance." Actually one of the most inspiring mixes for my own development, musically, ever. Stunning.
Every time I see another of his interviews I like him that little bit more. His humility is quite staggering when you consider how he is lauded. I can't imagine him referring to himself as Acid House Royalty likes other do. Arise, Sir Andrew of Weatherall.
