- Some thoughts on the merits of Long v Standard practice pipe chanters. I had a problem with the microphone while recording this so sorry for the dismal audio, hopefully the pictures will tell a story though!
Please feel free to comment below if you agree/disagree and I'll try to re-record this with proper audio! :-)
Great video! I have two long chanters and two standard ones (one of them electric). The hole spacings are not identical between my two types, but even with the differing spacings, I have no problem switching between them. It is very interesting to see your comparisons though. I'm looking to get a standard as my first blackwood chanter, it'll be interesting to compare it to the long plastic version by the same maker.
I do agree with your points on posture. To play the long chanters properly, I have to rest them on a knee sitting down, while the shorter ones can be more comfortably used on a table. I often play while watching TV with my legs on the sofa, which makes the long chanters awkward to use. In these situations, I prefer the short ones.
I therefore think it's advantageous to have both types so that one can comfortably play in whatever posture they find themselves in. And I guess if one finds themselves in one position more than the other, they can buy nicer blackwood chanters in that size!
