I’m a school engineer. I once worked in a building that had a bomb shelter from WWI or WWII that went underground for at least 20 blocks, and ended up connecting to the local army place. No one in the building really remembered or knew about the tunnels, and stuff until September 11th happened. Don’t understand how no one knew. I was working there almost 8 years before I realized they were there.

Managaing a bank-repossessed house from a sketchy guy who kept stalking us and trying to break back in, we cleaned and secured the house, the real estate agent was doing a walk through with a client and leaned on a giant homemade shelf in the basement and it moved. Come to find out half of the 6ft x 8ft shelf swings outward, to reveal a door hidden behind the wall paneling that was attached to the shelf instead of the wall. Behind the door is a 12ft x 6ft room, divided into a small storage space for the gardening equipment, the rest was hydroponic equipment. There was a literal hidden weed grow room hidden in this guys basement, I guess that explains why he was so persistent in trying to get back in. 😂

If someone else builds it, it is no longer a secret. Were I to do one, I might design a house with a second floor basement but make sure that the entrance can later be obscured in order to make it appear more mundane to the people building it and then make the needed alterations at a later date myself. If it sticks out in someone's mind, it is not as safe as you think.

If I ever make the money, I'm going to have my own scooby doo-esc house with a secret room for my most important stuff and because I think it's cool. My grandfather also likes to build furniture in his spare time and likes to put hidden compartments in stuff. When I moved into my own place, he built me a bedside table with secret compartment where I can keep a loaded gun hidden without being worried.

I’ve always wanted a secret room and once I had a dream that there was an entrance to a secret beautiful bedroom with a bathroom in my closet. The funny thing is that in my dream where this secret room wound have been would be part of the guest bedroom in real life as my bedroom closet shares the back wall with the guest bedroom closet! But it still would’ve been cool! Ever since I saw the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time I’ve always thought that stuff like that is awesome and for some reason it’s also part of the reason I like houses with more than 1 floor. Idk why and I know it’s kinda weird to say that but it’s true. I prefer 2 story houses to 1 story houses for some strange reason. But who else thinks it would be cool to have a door that opens into a totally different place?! I do!

I built a small room in a customer's closet for his gun safes. Kind of a fun project.
My friend just bought a house and it had a secret bookcase/door. Very poorly built. The door itself was fine, but the lock mechanism was just a metal rod that stuck sideways through the side. The rod was supposed to stick into a little eye loop, which was screwed to the trim on the other side of the wall, not into the stud. And the trim was held on with literally at least one hundred finish nails. They probably thought that would be enough to keep the trim held down, BUT THE NAILS DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT THROUGH THE DRYWALL!! We literally pulled it off with one hand. If that wasn't enough, it's clear that a lot of the electrical work in the house was done by someone who had no idea what they we're doing.

I'd go for building a 4-6 car garage across the road from my house, with an aircraft carrier style elevator near the middle. Goes up a level to something like an engine rebuild area (so long-term projects eat up less garage floor space) goes down one basement level for more vehicle storage, and has a key/code to go down to another basement level. With armored shutters closing after the elevator is clear.

If I had the money, I'd build secret rooms just to mess with potential robbers, snoops, etc. Secret trap doors that led to no where, safes behind art that contained nothing, empty rooms behind bookshelves, the possibilities would be endless. Of course I'd hide valuables in discreet places, I figure the fake secret places would eventually drive whoever was looking into just giving up. If not, it'd still be fun, though.

Not construction but demolition.....we've found so many hidden rooms and underground spaces not in the building plans.....machines have falling into basements and tunnels...most of the time it filled with polluted waste that the previous owners hid....the worst was a a chemical lab in Stockton California....we took down the main complex...loaded up all the equipment to move to the next job when one of our laborers came and showed us a hole in the ground....the hole turned out to be a massive underground holding area for the animals they where doing what ever kinds of test on....none of it was in city records and no permits where ever given to the lab for anything like this....they got there a$$ sued and we filled in the....underground cells...holding area....prison cells??? Idk what to call them....the lab is still somewhere in California they move to a new sight and we where all left traumatized....and i dont have a heart to tell you about amco petrochemical storage in Oakland that made all the homeless peoples sick....that one is just dark🥺

Near my house there is concrete barrier company that went bankrupt and abandoned their buildings. Upon inspecting the main office on the 2nd floor there was a bookshelf behind the desk that slid sideways into the wall reveling a hidden room. In there was an open empty safe, and stains all over the walls. I looked at the stains on the flood and the bullet hole on the wall at head height and it was very relevant to me there was a Suicide or murder.

Had small plans to make one. Was looking to buy a house and in the upstairs bathroom there was a small door about 4 feet up the wall. It was the access to the attic, big enough to walk around in. I didn't buy that place but thought about if I did I'd change the door into a cabinet and would be able to push the inside and it open to the attic, it was the only access point into it. Probably add another secret access in the main bedroom. It was a great house and I wish I got it but I was, and still am, a single guy and it looked like a home ment for a family, not what I was looking for.

This is just my comment but people might like it. I recently bought a house. In Florida. So no basements. But in the backyard I found what looked like a sewage hole. When I moved it to the side I found stairs. It didn't go that far down. But it had a Stone oven In the bottom. With vents and everything. Maybe the previous owners were Italian? Pretty cool find though since in florida we don't really have basements due to hurricanes and lime stone caves

DAMMIT PEOPLE if you ever get requests like some of these TELL THE POLICE & FBI!!!!
Then tell them again whenever you hear of a missing person's case. You may save someone's life.
