  • Heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis reflects on Mike Tyson's career decline in boxing after he was released from prison. In his later boxing career, Tyson lost his killer instinct and just fought to provide for his family and fought to pay the bills. This was later revealed in his post-fight interview after his last match as a pro boxer.

@geraldfriend256 he dodged Tyson and Holyfield in their prime. He was there all during those days but chose to stay off the radar, fighting mostly in England. He didn't start beating his chest until Holy was old, Mike was way past it years after prison. He was good, but if he had stepped up in the late 80s,.or even early 90s before prison, when Mike was really doing it, he would have been another Big man down early.

@gatekeepercreative Lewis was still in the amateurs/Olympics when Tyson was at his peak. He pressed hard to fight Mike Tyson for the WBC in 96, forcing Don King to pay him £4 million step aside money promising that the Tyson-Lewis fight would be more lucrarive after Tyson beats Holyfield and becomes undisputed champion.
Unfortunately this is how boxing politics typically unfolds.
Don't forget he also wanted to challenge Bowe in 94 but Bowe threw the belt in the bin instead. It was mostly champions avoiding Lewis and not the other way round.
With regards to Holyfield, Evander wasn't seen as a big deal fight until Holyfield had beaten Mike and Lewis happily stepped up.

Tyson was very vulnerable when Cuss died, that's when the vultures started to circle. He was one of the most dedicated and disciplined boxers to bless the square ring. He was obsessed with boxing, it was his life. True that he was an early bloomer but that bloom would have resigned for another 5 years had Cuss not passed. He was surrounded by people who were only there for his money. King and Griffith to name 2. They had a lot to do with his demise. Big ups to Lewis, spoken like a true Champ!

Tyson's style was a young man's style (ideal for early 20s, i think). The constant head and upper body movement, bobin' and weaving, leaping hooks and combinations with power and quickness requires a crazy level of conditioning. He could only maintain that rythm for so long, even if he kept his hunger for succes and focus. By the time he fought Lewis, he was 35 years old, and he had a trainer that brought back the traits of the mid 80s Tyson.
In his trainer words, Mike was at "30% of his former self" and the mission was to reach the 50%.
But i don't think 87’-88’ Tyson defeats prime Lewis either, it'll be a tough fight for both, but at the end Lewis will come out on top.

Kudos to Lennox Lewis for displaying such integrity and sportsmanship!
Although Muhammad Ali was forced into a temporary "retirement" at his peak by American jingoists who tried to force him to go against his conscience having to do with his religion vis-a-vis the war in Vietnam, it wasn't the same thing as being confined inside the four walls of a prison with ZERO freedom as Tyson was. Sadder still was the fact that the alleged "rape victim" Desiree Washington gleefully participated in the beauty [ugly?] pageant following the supposed "assault", and only came up with the accusation after failing woefully at the said pageant. [For avoidance of doubt, methinks that [REAL] rape is the highest crime that can be committed against a fellow human being, only next to murder.]
However, admitting that it wasn't the same Tyson that he fought following his incarceration, does not in any way diminish Lennox Lewis's status as an all-time great! 'nuff said.

Hearing Tyson say that was like watching a lion give up and become a nomad. Which is what Tyson did at the time. It was sad.

Mike's problems weren't Lennox fault. The public wanted the fight and he obliged. Lennox has also pointed out that it was unforunate that they peaked at different times of their respective careers so that matchup would never likely have been on an even playing field at any time.

Lewis always has been seen by me as a pretty decent guy. A lot of fighters would just be, I beat the baddest man on the planet. But he explains it in a way that wasn't demeaning or mocking. A fair assessment. Bad people don't do this.

Tyson was never built to last - peekaboo takes an obsessive amount of focus to pull off. Constant movement for 12 rounds, mentally and physically draining. Hard to keep that up for more than a couple of years, especially with all the distractions of being champion. These guys were around the same age but half a generation apart professionally - I think a 90s Lewis was always going to be big ask for an 80s Tyson. That old style boxing wouldn't have worked with someone who wasn't scared and had so many physical advantages.

They both sparred under Cus's guidance and Cus told Mike that one day they will clash for the heavyweight title.
Unfortunately their peaks would never align. Tyson peaked at 20-22. Lewis peaked 28-32.
If they'd fought when Mike was prime, then Lewis was still in the amateurs/olympics and Tyson would easily win. Fighting years later, Lewis would always win.
Meanwhile Don King wanted this fight delaying as long as possible.

That wasn't the best Lennox either though but credit for Lennox being honest and the reality was Mike as a boxer was slowly bleeding skill and commitment to the sport ever since Cus died which was very early in Mikes career so with Mike it's a case of "what might have been" but that's a lot of people's story in life so it is what it is and he had an excellent career given the absolute mayhem in and around him.
