- Jusant is a delightful game about climbing a mountain, enjoying rope physics, and trying to quietly piece together exactly how much of this mountain used to be underwater...

This is an incredibly difficult concept to translate into a video game. I coached a competitive youth rock climbing team for 2 years, and there's lots of intricacies in the art of rock climbing. Well done to the studio
They did a great job. They basically taught Jon the difference between lead and toprope at 12:40
"The tide has gone and jusanted."
Quotes like this make my day.
My carabiner has…. Jusanted
I for one welcome Jusant becoming a verb.
It's a perfectly cromulent word
having done some amateur rock climbing in the past, seeing jon not attach his rope to the pitons on the wall as he went by was making me worry so, so hard.
Don't worry, it's a game.
@@Hunterr8 fair enough i suppose.
@@claytonparfumorse3101 It's absolutely a reasonable concern.
However, the mechanic of adding your own new ones at any point sort of negate the need to use them in this Demo.
I suspect you will need to use all 4 of yours, plus the one(s) given to complete certain sections in the proper release.
*At some point someone was doing something*
I love how Jon figured out exactly what's going on in the game with the contextual clues
"You know I'm something of an archeologist myself!" Jon, 2023
The addition of the safety harness is a great mechanic, but it also seems to trigger my anxiety in a way no other platformer ever has. I'm suddenly paralysingly scared that Jon will fall.
"There's never been a bad climbing game"
Looking forward to Jon playing Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
That was my first thought. Arguably it's not a bad game though, just frustrating and not very fun for the average person. I do know some people actually like it though.
As a old climber and a guy who has a big fear of height (yup, it was hard for me to climb!), this game feels delightful AND terrifying at the same time. I'm gonna play it with my kid! :D
Those "rock sculptures" are cairns. They're generally markers of some sort, most commonly as a direction marker or burial grounds. Given that we're not in prehistory it could be a save point of sorts.
Given that there was coral or whatever it was on clearly man-made structures, I think the water must come and go in cycles. I really want to figure out the mysteries of this setting.
That would be an amazing game mechanic: if you wait 20 hours (or whatever it takes, just a bit longer than it takes to climb) on a boat on the ground, water comes back and takes you all the way to the top.
A carabiner is the clip you attach to yourself to hook your ropes too
The fact that you had to mention this in the comment tells me this episode is going to be interesting....
Never changed Jon.
He probably has one on his keys
To be fair, the way the game mentions carabiners is not exactly very clear and while this is obviously made by people who know climbing, there are definitely some "video game liberties" taken here that make it a bit hard to understand, like the anchor for the rope at the base of the different pitches.
In the way this game seems to work: The Piton is hammered into the rock, in real life in cracks (and I guess in this world clean climbing no longer matters), and then the carabiner is attached to the piton, maybe a runner is used and then the rope goes through it. (Or a quickdraw could be used)
The fact that he suddenly shanges to the correct pronunciations tells us there was a quick google search during that edit. (Keeps watching) Nope, nevermind, no attempt was made.
Spell it with a K and it means carbine in German.
I wish Jon had looked up at 32:51 it seemed like the lights were projecting a pattern on the ceiling, like rippling water.
It's been a while since I've seen a game that genuinely made me "Wow", but this has done it. It looks stunning, has beautiful music and the mechanics are realistic yet simple. Definitely going on my Must-Buy list.
17:50 it’s the 3 seashells
"Hehehehe! He's used to using toilet paper! He doesn't know how to use the shells!"
Jon spinning the music box and then not looking up at the obvious water design ,the thing they don't have so have little knowledge of, projected on the ceiling is peak jon
Some games, you can tell a lot of Jon's time and effort in cut in editing to make it more entertaining. Everything is so beautiful and interesting in this game, I think very little was cut.
I sure _hope_ we see more of this in the future.
I like how a single mountain has biomes
When that giant bug appeared out of the cave, the first thing I thought was "it's a bug planet!" from Starship Troopers...
I've fallen in love with this game so much that I can't finish watching this. Thanks for introducing it to your audience MATN!
As an occasional climber and PC gamer, this really got my attention. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Jon.

I really do love how Jon enjoys all games 🥳
I love Don't Nod titles but I was a little worried this one'd be just a "walking simulator" albeit with climbing - but it looks like this actually has a lot of thought into the mechanics of climbing! I wasn't excited for it before but I certainly am now, hell yeah.
This setting has the feel of being what the Aral Sea would look like if Hyrule were ecologically devastated by Princess Zelda's ill-advised central planning and ecological engineering programs.
Chairwoman Zelda might have caused an economic booboo
I didn't even notice the "finger print" in the bottom corner until John pointed it out now I can't unsee it! 😂
Got a soft spot for indie games that say very little but show so much. Helps that this one looks gorgeous so far.
Please please please return to this when the full game comes out!
Excited for this! Love a good focused game.
I love the atmosphere of this game - the sounds, the music, the scenery...it all works beautifully together. I'm hoping to see another video from you for this game after Halloween!
Wow. That's remarkable. And as someone who did some climbing when I was younger, the mechanics broadly check out.
Also, the little "rock towers," as you called them? If you go hiking in back country/off the beaten track areas, at least in the US, you will occasionally find waypoints/markers that previous hikers have set up, which are these little cairns of stone. As you encounter one, it's kind of hiker ritual to add another stone to the cairn, to mark that you have been there as well.
Jon not using pitons should inspire a challenge mode for this game. You can tall some of these puzzles just weren't designed to be done by someone whose just not using the safety equipment
Ok, this better have some cool environmental narrative elements, because I'm buying it day one.
Oh this is made by Don't Nod apparently, creators of one of my favorite games of all time. No wonder it looked interesting to me.
This was awesome. Beautiful graphics, unique gameplay mechanics. I can't wait to see more of this after the full release.
Oh I liked this one a lot, it has such a good atmosphere!
Will definitely like to see more on the channel once it comes out
I made it about 20 minutes in before my fear of heights forced me to stop watching. Good going to the studio I guess, you made it too real for me. 😄
Such good Journey vibes, I love a quiet game with minimal but well executed music and sound.
The weird stick figure physics of the PC's arms in the air looking for holds seriously borders between extremely well done, and impressive- to absolutely ridiculous abd downright goofy. I literally am uncertain how to feel about it.
Thw reat of the game is pretty cool. It gives the character the opportunity to really explore the 3D environment, within reasonable (if somewhat unrealistic) physical ability to do so. (Assuming you're an ABSOLUTE CHAD of a climber whom has spent nearly every waking moment of their life, since the formation of memories, training to do so...)
But..its a game, and there's clearly some "other-worldly" shit goin' on... So it's unreasonable to believe that the PC is physically capable of what we're seeing.
Additionally, I really like the Iggaak goggles (or, Inuit Snow Goggles) the PC wears, as they absolutely makes sense in a world of desert biome.
I can't _personally_ say that I intend to pick this one up.. but I'm really picky about the games that I play, as well as the obvious fact that I am the kind of person who prefers to watch Jon play a cool game, which will inform whether or not I like it enough to actually buy, and seriously play it.
Seems like a really cool game, for the right kind of players, I hope to see this game do well. :)
This looks awesome!
Be-flipping-autiful
Ah, I got so excited when I saw this video... I thought the game was out! I really loved the demo of this game during the Steam Next Fest a few months ago.
Clever game. Great mechanics. Beautiful cut scenes
If you enjoy games that let you explore areas that used to be underwater, as well as climbing & ziplines, you should play Mad Max.
It's all that plus awesome vehicular combat & a huge post-apocalyptic open world.
I tried to watch this. I really did. But heights - even cartoon heights - give me the heebee jeebees. My legs got wibbly and my huevos tried to crawl up into my belly.
I adore this!
What a pretty looking game.
Jon has clearly no fear of hights.
It seems like the French are doing great with these focused indie games. This one looks amazing, and so does the fencing game from before.
Watching this video did trigger my vertigo quite a bit, however. :D
Lovely game. Really impressed with this.
(17:50) What a terrible place for a toilet! You have to risk plummeting to a splattery doom every time nature calls!
Please do a series when it comes out.
25:00 The frog friend on your head reminds me of the pear on the head thing from Windwaker where you can control the seagulls to find secrets for you. I wonder if that's a little hat-tip...
This is how I play a climbing game let Jon worry about falling I have virtigo to think about. 😱
Bring back the when the full game is available!
I’m so glad you mentioned the screen looking different at the bottom right, thought my phone screen was on its way out 😅
This game is awesome looking. Reminds me of an amazing story of a world that became flooded.
This makes me want to play it more than I already do.
Can not wait to see speadruns of this game
Oho. Arm shake. Now that is what climbers do for sure.
Yup, when I saw that it added to how impressed I was. It’s a good detail.
As soon as I saw the shaking out I knew it was made by people who really know what climbing is. I like how it only gets back some stamina, not all.
I do wonder if the game will get hard hard.
There was a demo on Steam too, I played it before. Looks like they took it down again.
Neat!
Either the sun temple or the pizza parlour… Never change Jon!
I think this is giving me some RiME vibes. Looks interesting.
It looks like a combination of Grow Home and Rime which I am very up for.
I'm not sure I'm crazy about the controls. Reminds me of that ice climbing section in Modern Warfare 2 WAAAAY back in the day and I hated having to alternate the triggers. My brain would always fuck it up and I'd fall. Doing that for a few hours I think would cramp the hell out of my hands as well.
That being said I bet speedrunners are going to have a field day with this game finding routes!
This looks beautiful! Unlike a certain OTHER mountain climbing game, which only brings misery...
Would be so cool seeing you play Only Up
3 sea shells. if you know, you know
I don't think your little frog friend being a ballast is supposed to be a big twist considering it's literally called that on the game's Steam page.
Some games are award bait, and some games are Jon bait.
what a beautiful game 🥲
Jon, have you tried Grow Home or its Sequel Grow Up? Such a fun climbing based title.
Climbing simulators are on the rise. Imagine incorporating the mecanic into one of the AC games
that would be to much innovation for them
There'd be no money in it for Ubisoft...
Ubisoft already did this style of climbing mechanics in Grow Home and Grow Up which they have since abandoned.
There is no way I could manage the mechanics, but it sure is one pretty looking, and sounding, game. I hope it does well
For climbing you might also try 'New Heights'
This looks like a ridiculously pretty game.
Good afternoon lace jump. Yes Jon that is what you said at the beginning
I would buy this games for the soundtrack alone
The game gives me Omno/Journey vibes!
Jon did a Journey video (not a karaoke version of Don't Stop Believin', but about the game) about 5 or 6 years ago. Iirc he was thoroughly unimpressed and really disliked the game basically on the grounds it was trying to hard to be art. I remember it pretty distinctly because it is easily my least favorite MATN video.
I'll have to rewatch it to make sure I remember the criticism and tone correctly (and probably get really annoyed again).
An interesting game.
Seems neat. I was worried this might be a bit like some uh other "climbing games" released in recent years which seem that trolling was the point rather than a good time lol.
this reminds me of Getting Over It another climbing game but less frustrating
Love the content Jon! Give Ted a cuddle for me!
How in God's name do you not know what a carabiner is? Its not even really a climbing thing, its a thing that's just all over the place in LIFE.
“……..I do enjoy a game were I don’t have a c*cking clue.”
A carabiner is like a Ribena, but you carry it to the top of the mountain
Petition to have an Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian playthrough on the channel :3
(edit) I love games that while looking at the setting make you wonder who lived there, what their culture was, and what happened for it to be the way it is.
did you ever play grow home or grow up? similar vibes
18:00 But what a view though.
Not sure why, but watching this is giving the weirdest sense of vertigo
The heights maybe? Just a guess
How would Get over It rank in the climbing games?
Seeing this makes me wonder why Jon hasn't played Only Up, like every other youtuber.
Has Jon never heard of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy? I guess I wouldn't necessarily call it a bad climbing game but fun to play? Well that's debatable.
I love this type of game - one that gently teaches you abilities and mechanics, expecting more of you each time, and weaves them into a beautiful, mysterious story and lore. Stunning visuals too.
I hate climbing though, makes my balls creep back up inside my body. Not a big fan of climbers either - sorry guys, but you're all a bit weird, wiry and intense and, well, hacky sacky. Sorry.
toilet has three seashells
I am only a minuet in and I can't belieev jon was so insensitive as to say "I think I sea" when there was no sea! ;P
It's from Don'tNod? Interesting. If you finish it when it comes out, I'll watch. Probably not really the kind of game I'd want to buy unless it's reeally cheap. Like, $20 tops. Honestly, for me, probably more like $5-$10. Just REALLY not the kind of game I tend to like, personally. I like more direct storytelling lol.
I am bread qwop journey?
if little frog friend is a ballast and he only popped out when you made it to the bridge, does that make him a bridge ballast?
CaraBEANer is the American pronunciation. CaraBINEr is the British pronunciation.
It's the last guardian... without the annoying guardian. Take. My. Money.
I loved Trico but others did seem to have a more frustrating time with him than I did. Personally I think people spamming caused a lot of the problems, though that isn't to say he wouldn't glitch out on his own sometimes.
Kinda like Stray, except no cat. Not bad.
Stray? Really? I don't see it. Mechanically, that game was super simple, no actual challenge to the platforming. This actually looks fun and engaging gameplay wise.
Face it, this is just a pretty version of the 40 year old platforming games of donkey kong, and Mario brothers.@@donovanfaust3227
