Please continue making these type of videos. They are "raw" and real (unlike some travel culinary tv shows). You show us it all. Yes, yes, and yes!!!!!
Durian really deserves to get its title 'king of fruits'. No other fruits can do like what it does. It makes whole world busy talking about it when its season comes, What I've been told that Musang King reaches RM500/each in Hong Kong & up to RM800/each in Shanghai, Syabas durian, you're the one.

Have u tried durian in d Malay traditional dessert? It's called pulut durian, it's sticky rice eaten with durian with a splash of coconut cream, it's like how d Thai eat sticky rice with slices of mango. We also have 'pengat durian', durian cooked with coconut milk n palm sugar, n it's also eaten with sticky rice. Perhaps u did try some desserts made out of musang king durian like ice cream.
Thanks. I've never been a fan of Durian flavoured foods. I learned that they often use chemicals to get the taste and I have found it disappointing and sometimes just not nice, so I tend to avoid them.. but I am still happy to try..👍🙂
@@Steve-Owens Good to know that. There's a local ice cream product brand, Nestlé if I'm not mistaken, makes d best durian ice cream. A medium tube, around half a liter cost RM 28 n d popsicle costs RM4.50, quite expensive, but u will definitely taste d real flavor of musang king durian. 😁
Steve, I was just at our Asian market and I could smell the durian as soon as I walked in the door. I would love to try it but can't afford the $35-40 a fruit.. I have heard good and bad about durian. I hope to try it someday. Enjoyed the video.
That's super expensive Tess, there is an air of mystic about the fruit which keeps the Price High. I was told it's because it has a short Harvest (4 months) but I did not include that side of the story as I think that is nonsense, All fruit has a short Harvest, Apples don't grow as the seed is planted, not peaches or Strawberries. It's a fascinating fruit but the prices should never get like that. Hopefully you ca try it one day.
Thanks Steve, I couldn't understand why the price was so high. It is fascinating but not for that $. Yes, hopefully someday. Thanks for the video, it was very very informative. :)
@fingercrack you just don't understand the science and effort behind good durian. It took so much effort and time for the Malaysian farmer to breed those durian. Do some research before jump into conclusion.
Hey steve, nice show and very kind of you to introduce durian to our western friends. May i just add in some tips hopefully our western friends can overcome the overwhelming smell in the first time. The taste can be simply divided in to 3 types, sweet, bitter and both. I would advise first timers to try the sweet one as its more acceptable by the taste buds.I did this to my American collegue when he came to Singapore and asked to try the durian. He was enthusiastic at first until he smelled it, I told him, hold your breath and put the durian in your mouth ,Do not chew or swallow, just compressed the fruit with your tongue and upper part of the mouth and let the taste explode, think of it as a custard or thick yourgurt, savoured the sweetness of it. He finished the entire durian although he claimed that its a bit 'rich' in taste. hahhaha..... want to know the trick to open the durian and get rid of the smell after eating it? First ,look at the base or the butt we used to call it here in Singapore. you will see a 'star' like lines where a few of them joins together. Follow the visible lines up towards the stalk or stem, that is the cue and clue to tell you how the durian can be opened up. It can be pry open just with a pen if you know how to. i ususally do it with a flat face screwdriver. Just poke through the point where all the lines joint together at the base, twist it towards where the visible lines are seem, when its pry open, you can just slide your thumb on the lines and the shells will open up. After eating, do not throw the shells away, take one of the shell and go to a running tap, let the water runs inside the shell and you wash and drink off from the base of the shell, all the smell will be gone. One more thing, if you are worried about getting too heaty, filled the shell with some water, spill a little bit of salt in and drink it. Greetings and best wishes from Singapore.

This was so interesting steve about the duriun. I've heard of this fruit but never seen one and certainly didn't know they had different flavours. That man was so smart and very much had a passion for what he does. It looks weird lol
yeh penang durian is very outstanding . when i were a little my dad was a durian farmer we only plant very good durian taste , if he taste the durian not good he will cut it and plant new one . some of the durian was 100 years over and some still taking time for the harvest and my dad past away many many year ago. in my village in balik pulau was a durian famous durian farm what making balik pulau durian is famous is because old folks only plant good taste and its plan uphills . that is why this place produced a tasteful durian varieties .
Hello from Singapore ! 😊 Really enjoyed your video about the durians and your video quality is superb! The owner of the farm seems friendly and sincere though. Hope to visit the farm in the future ! 👍🏼☺️
No worries, mate and glad that you were kept busy while in Penang. I totally agreed with you regarding the after effect of eating the durians. Haha! Very glad that I come across your videos which are, not only informative but a pleasure to see your adventures.Thank you mate and happy travelling to you n your wife. I've had a durian milkshake before to me it taste like a mix of mango garlic onions with a hint of juniper. There is an Asian Market in town that sells durian and some day I will buy one and try it straight up. But as with any fruit nothing compare to eating right off the plant.
don't you just wonder who was the first person to say "THAT SMELLS LIKE CRAP AND I AM GOING TO EAT IT" - good job that you kept an open mind - I would love to give it a try
The bigger they are, the harder they fall? I mean the taller the tree, the higher the durian falls, and so the harder it hits the ground? And that improves the flavour?
i believe that's the case. durian needs to hit the ground to complete the ripening process, so that it can be consumed almost instantly. and the slight numbness on your tounge can only be obtained by eating a freshly dropped durian
Hi Steve , been following the videos of your adventures in Penang and couple of which makes me feel so homesick ! I love the one about the Durian as it is my favourite fruit . Thank you for sharing and stay safe while travelling . Cheers mate !
Amazing video.. those are some serious high end durians...durians are really an acquired taste, I am malaysian and I thought they smell like the toilet after being out of the country for a year... they are really delicious though
not sure if its overated. But try it once and decide for yourself. Very expensive now, but its quality is high and consistent, otherwise you got ripped off. Also get it in season and not before or after. You dont wqnt to buy it when its going bad or too expensive for first harvest.
@@sdqsdq6274 only few farms in Balik Pulau, Penang have old Musang King trees.. probably more than 30 years old. but Penang is not famous for Musang King plus it's not as good as MK in Pahang.

LoL, that seems like a good idea, I suspect the only Numb you'll get is if you drop in on your foot.. Sorry! The tastes are similar but varying in intensity and pungency, it's the subtle notes that make them different and they a lot different to look at, though I am so far from and expert :)
Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods needs to make an episode on the Durians at Bao Sheng Durian Farm in Penang before totally writing it off as awful tasting fruit!
i have try taste fruit ripe from the older tree. its realy amazing taste. come to sabah at fruit season. find the local durian fruit what we call as durian kampung. i was share on my channel. fydomart
I am not so sure Dave :o) six months from now knuckles will still work, where as the six will just be a old phone someone is handing down to their dear old dad.. ;o)
mine advice is eat it with a open mind rather then comparing with other fruits , its a fruit of his own , i dont eat pineapple and say it taste like durian ....
Durian tastes very much like the odorant put in cooking gas. It contains a "thio" chemical compound characterized by a sulfur-hydrogen bond (SH group), which chemists call a "shit group".
Durians are way too expensive. Consumers are conned. Vendors should sell by opening the durian fruit and then putting the seeds into a transparent plastic box or even a styrofoam box and then weigh from there. That would be fair, otherwise consumers are just paying for the husk for nothing. Remember, here the consumers are absorbing the cost of seeds too. At RM60 to RM70 per kg, durians are too pricey compared to say a kg of good rice which is only RM6. Moreover, sometimes durians can make you sick. Beware!
iTelephone 8 is it not easy to harvest a good quality of durian, try planting yourself how very challenging, time consume and lot of resources needed and knowledge needed plus it has its own season. Have you seen durian tree grow in lab?, best quality is grow at the hill side. I been there helped my late grandpa manage small durian ochard less hilly, mostly only 40% can be consume , only 20% can be sold as good grade. We took a lot of afford in growing and maintaining the ochard. If it very easy to maintain such as rambutan or watermelon ..can be harvest any season sure can be sold at cheaper price.
@@idhamnasran Crude palm oil estates or for that matter those of small holders are also very challenging, time consuming to manage and require a lot of resources and knowledge too. Refined palm oil which you use to cook is going for like maybe RM2.50 per kg and the plastic bottle is included. Good quality rice is also only going for around Rm 5 to 6 per kg and both these goods are difficult to plant and manage too. Rice comes nicely packed too with prints to give you more information. I am protesting that at the very moment a consumer pays for the durian the husks are of no use at all and the seller immediately throws it away. I am also saying that because the buyer is absorbing the costs of the durian seeds already. If you search youtube videos, you will see an old man who told his assistants that there was a durian peak but he wanted the buyers to pay more. Sure you can get rich but I am thinking the Government should step in for such items too before the sellers run it up to cause inflation in this country. You would know by now that even the Black Thorn is sometimes about Rm100 per kg. Sure if a person can afford it, pay then but then I think it is the sellers who are playing the market because at about 1 am in the morning, there are still plenty of durians unsold. How do the sellers play it? I am not sure but throttling the market is one day, lying about supply is another.
Then why Caviar is more expensive? Shortage of fish? No... Take long time? No.. 😆 burger over hundred also got.. Salmon sushi hard to get? So manh why.. But local people can get chepaer if u knw where to find.. I can get rm25 ti 30 ringgit only per kg musang king .. But for self family ok la not bussiness la
@@erickoh82 Yes, I am expressing that durians are expensive and all can see that they are. Being expensive is not the only issue. Caviar is expensive and we can choose. Paying thru' your nose is the real issue. Here I am, just paid, to see the husks being thrown away and all at my expense. Sure you can buy cheaper MK but not all of us have the luxury of finding such decent sellers and I am saying those sellers in big towns are just rip off artists.
iTelephone 8 . You got tge point. Yes usually the middkeman are the ones caused the durians so costly! they raked profit more than the orchard owners. All coned diwn to same thing. GREED !

LoL, that seems like a good idea, I suspect the only Numb you'll get is if you drop in on your foot.. Sorry! The tastes are similar but varying in intensity and pungency, it's the subtle notes that make them different and they a lot different to look at, though I am so far from and expert :)
Exellent vid, I,ve learnt something for a change!
Nice,, well thank you
Steve
how much for one durian??
rm100
I was expecting you to give a review of the 5 durian taste.. Good video though.
durian is king of all fruits

this must be what heaven is like
Idol bao sheng...
Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods needs to make an episode on the Durians at Bao Sheng Durian Farm in Penang before totally writing it off as awful tasting fruit!
The durians fruits it’s very expensive in Malaysia especially the great one we called it “Musang king” (kings fox)
no doubt about the price. it can be ridiculously expensive. but it also depends on durian types, when & where to get your durian from..
The smell is ok. What westerners are not prepared for is the texture. Take it as a custard
I see many sissy because they are taking such a small bite, just gobble it down you will be hooked
i live in penang.
Excellent :o) love it there.
musang king is the best king fuirt in the world.so yummy

iPhone 6 sounds better than knuckles.
I am not so sure Dave :o) six months from now knuckles will still work, where as the six will just be a old phone someone is handing down to their dear old dad.. ;o)
There's really something super creepy about one making eye contact with you/the camera while eating. 😁
LoL..
mine advice is eat it with a open mind rather then comparing with other fruits , its a fruit of his own , i dont eat pineapple and say it taste like durian ....
If you can handle the smell , you gonna taste it and the you Like it, later time you gonna love it and get addicted by this Fruit .
Trust me
Be a pal and talk to him about that nose hair situation :) I love this guy!!!
Be a Pal and kick back and enjoy life, it'll make the whole journey just a little more fun.
Steve's Kitchen
FOR SURE! I love that farmer! What a treat to here someone speak so passionately about something so PRACTICAL and good.
Piece of god that fruit is!
Durian tastes very much like the odorant put in cooking gas. It contains a "thio" chemical compound characterized by a sulfur-hydrogen bond (SH group), which chemists call a "shit group".
This Tau Kei is funny but cool
The worms that were a problem, would have been nematodes. A difficult pest to control.
He means Unami!
? What is that
If you rat durian i believe your se....x will always up 😃😃😃
Durians are way too expensive.
GREED !
i believe the chinese guy own the orchard and durian experts...dont play-play with him ...
I’m genuinely jealous of you.
I know.. I was lucky.. this week I went to another place also.. did you see?
100 years old durian tree and not 100 years old fruit.
Nope it was 100 year old Durian, by the way the Octopus and Kangaroo Cheesecake is in the post
@@Steve-Owens You are funny.
