    You go, grrrrrlfriend! I'm 65 and bought a short bus this year to convert to travel. After losing my husband to ALS in the initial COVID lock down and losing my organic farm due to being primary caregiver to my best friend and husband I bought a used 34 foot Class C motorhome for my 4 dogs and cat and I to move into. Regroup, make a plan and start over. I lived in my Rig from Aug 2020 to Aug 2022 when I moved into my unfinished tiny cabin I'm building. I have electric and plumbing and walls covered but that's it
    I still have to design and finish my kitchen, build a large deck to build my laundry room on so it's not in my cabin. I have a lot to do to finish, but I will. My friend did the plumbing and I build and do all the carpentry. She lives up the hill. We've been bff's since 7th grade. Here we are in our mid 60s still kicking ass and taking names, lol!!! Get a bus instead of a van or motorhome. Safest and best built vehicle. I got a 2001 GMC Savana 3500. Thomas built bus. I named her Babe. She is my next project after my cabin. I'll finish her like a cushy vardo for my dogs and I to travel in.

      @@robinevans3979 Hello Robin. I'm a 65 yrs old widow. I sailed as a teenager with my dad and and later with my husband. When I retired 8 yrs ago, I wanted to sell the house and go live on a boat. Just what you're doing! Today I still think it'd be good to live on a boat although I'm not sure I could sail one alone. I'd be curious to know how or if you handle the boat alone when you go sailing. I know the strength required to haul up the main or the (controlled) chaos surrounding reefing a main in a good wind ! I'll keep a look out for any more videos you may post. If I ever get out to BC I'd definitely look for you and stop and say hi. I think you've made a great life for yourself.

    • @HempBike
      @HempBike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@CB-kn1ox Hi CB. There's a lot can be done to make a sailboat easier to handle as age intrudes on our strength and agility. Just one example - you mention raising the main. Don't run the halyards to the cockpit where you have to pull horizontally and suffer extra friction from the turning blocks. Have the halyard exit the mast high enough up to be a stretch to reach. Then gravity and your own weight are actually helping as you reach up and haul down. There's hundreds of tips like this. At 65 you're definitely not old by sailboat cruising standards.

    • @robinevans3979

      @@HempBike Yup, I personally don't like everything brought back to the cockpit. I haul my main up easily to the top at 46', and just use the winch for the final tightness. I let friends have a go but they struggle. Technique and practice help. nope, not old.

    What a legend this bird is. Genuine, forthright and true. Gives me hope for living on a boat. The boat very homely and although looking cluttered you can tell everything has its' place and nothing is useless.. Nice to see a real live-aboard rather than a holiday living-room / chalet. You don't get advice from a person like this and disrespect it unless you're foolish. Hope there's 10 years of happiness on the waves coming to this lady and more. Great job letting her tell her story and not making it about yourself. Enjoyed this video

I was surprised (and pleased) when you said many musicians lived on boats because it doesn't seem to line up with "not having anyone to share experiences with." I often think of living aboard but invariably come up against "who could I make music with." I feel like I would miss my band too much. Maybe it will help be make friends by forcing me out to find other musicians.

    Robin, with deep and earnest respect and reverence, I wish to express my unmeasurable gratitude to you for creating and posting this vignette of your and your magnificent cats life! I too live aboard. My sanctuary, my temple, my commodious and lovely home is a 40’ Phill Rhodes yawl, DREAMER, currently berthed in a slip in Sausalito California. I claw for the requisite legal tender, as a freelance captain and shipwright, running yachts and utility craft, and working boats, usually wood, planking, framing, (carpentry) as well as systems, plumbing, electrical, and no doubt engine efforts, and a specialty, finishes by brush! I’m blessed to always have ample work, and am also blessed and am oh so grateful to be known for excellence, Which I never stop striving for.
    I deeply thank you Robin for this honest and wonderful, in-depth gaze and walkthrough!
    To me this is wildly valuable and highly inspiring material! Watching your footage, it’s wildly evident that so so very much of your ways and beliefs and ethos’s which you so eloquently expressed, I absolutely share!
    I’m told I ought to be doing something similar, as I’ve found that people seem to want to listen to me talk about boats and all-things maritime and of seafaring lore! This sort of encouraging advice particularly reaches me of late, as I am in very very overdue need of a new hip! Just one of many indications that I have pressed this body so so hard working throughout my life of nearly half a century! I’m in urgent need of learning a sustainable way to claw together that requisite legal tender... something way less impactful and less painful!
    Way to endorse this lifestyle, and to clearly show the very beautiful and very doable approach to this semi-nomadic, very independent, and quite unorthodox, while intensely rich way to survive and to thrive in this tangled, wealth-admiring, modern world!
    Blessings Robin!
    Cheers,
    -Cpt. Loyal Tarbet

    Brilliant. So natural, so human and no ego. I could learn alot from you. I live in the UK but I bought a 10m sailing boat earlier this year in Greece aged 69yrs after retiring aged 67. I hope I've got a few years left to enjoy. Many years ago in the 1970's I was a navigating officer in the merchant navy for 6 years and then a full-time coastguard officer for 6 years so great respect for the sea. I then changed to a non maritime career which was completely different. Like you I had only used charts in the 70's and 80's. I couldn't believe how easy navionics was and just like a car satnav. I am the same as you regarding engines and electrics. You could easily do a television series. I hope to see more of your videos. Thank you.

    • @robinevans3979
      @robinevans3979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate your comments. I completed one of my brothers' week-long sailing courses so that I would be capable of navigating without all these mod-cons, but have not yet needed to. I tend to sail during daylight hours mostly because I don't travel far enough to warrant an overnight sail but I could if needed. I like my sleep at night and my play during the daylight. I travel in fog sometimes so Navionics is such a bonus, and can use the ship aware app on my phone to tell me where the nearby boats are that have AIS. I'm not sure how much into my 70's I'll want to continue though imagining a life not on the sea feels alien now. What kind of boat did you buy for your cruising?

    Oh mu gosh! I have found my sister of another mother! Robin, I am 63 year young sailor dying slowly on land. I have been on a sailboat since I was 1 month old. Since I am a caregiver to my parents, my land life is slowly coming to an end. I have my own home that I am updating so I can sell it. I also still work full time to put $$$ in the bank for retirement. You are so inspiring to us Mature Ladies of the Sea. One day we shall meet. Keep doing what you are doing! REcommend to find a sailing club and start crewing. You don't even need your own boat to get involved and start learning. Then if you want you can find cheap boats everywhere, even free on occasion. Fixing one up you learn as you go, (lots of help on TH-cam).

    This makes me miss my Ericson 38. I recently had to part ways with the vessel. I'm 27 I told myself I'll have another some day. Great lifestyle and great people always willing to help. For people wanting to buy a boat here's what I learned. Always check the packing around the shaft of the prop, always check the bilge for water, always test the standing rigging and check for rust/cracking, look for bubbles in the deck, check that no drains are clogged or rusted shut(thru hull), make sure motor pushes water when started, and if you're not going to have it hulled pay a diver to go underneath and take some pictures. Make sure they check for blisters. Best of luck! ⛵️

      @@robinevans3979 Then you would agree that even with a $30k budget you will not purchase a perfect vessel that size. If someone is reading this and you are not a hands on person really think twice. Marine work is exorbitantly expensive. On top of paying docking you WILL need someone to clean the bottom regularly. If you are in salt water a bottom job is needed roughly every 4 years. Zincs need to be constantly changed. Any rigging especially standing rigging could get close to $10k once they have to remove your mast. This isn't even getting into the wiring or water lines or storage tanks, Water heaters...

I am told, apparenlty they didn't know alot about fibreglass in those days and so they made the hulls alot thicker.. I had a full and very thorough professional survey and spent alot of the first season getting jobs done. Also I am not as strong as I used to be so may purchase an electric winch handle. We never stop learning. 😊
